That was back when real drummers were struggling to play beats programmed from a drum machine. I struggled with it. I had a good teacher. I didn't have Omar, but I learned a lot from the guy. This sounds like "I Feel For You" by Chaka Khan. BTW, the best solo I ever heard in my life was from Omar playing with Sting, Radio City, 1985.

This video clip on Rock School was so influential for me as a young drummer growing up in the UK during the mid-80s. I had taped the show on VHS, and I played it over and over to learn the groove he plays. I'm in my 50s now and I still occasionally wheel it out this groove at soundchecks. This is a trip down memory lane. Thank Omar and Drumfluence for posting.

Can anyone explain the notes he’s doing on his hi hat for that trap style run through? I would love to learn how to play like that but I’m a long time beginner 😂
@WhyTheHorseface2 жыл бұрын
That is definitely not “Trap style”. That’s five stroke rolls in funk style.
@OfficialCesarValdez2 жыл бұрын
Hi Katie, yes, the pattern he’s playing on the hi-hat alone by definition can be considered Trap Style because of the intricate nature of it. Some might disagree. It’s very similar to the Linn drum machine programmed pattern on the song 777-9311 by The Time. And as for what he is playing, it’s all about knowing your rhythmic time values: Quarter Notes, 8th Notes, 16th Notes, 32nd Notes and a careful study of The 26 Standard Drum Rudiments. Hope this was helpful and informative.👍
