Norwegian rap duo Karpe is Chirag Rashmikant Patel and Magdi Omar Ytreeide Abdelmaguid. In 2022 they released Omar Sheriff, a music project packed full of tributes and nods to their background (Chirag being of Indian and Magdi being of Egyptian origin). They mix Norwegian with Arabic, Hindi, Gujarati and English in a way no one has done before them - call it 'diaspora pop'. I cried after hearing my language Gujarati in the new song Piya Piya Calling from Coke studio Pakistan as we hardly get representation in Music. I had to find out who this man was and low and behold it was Chirag Patel. I can't believe that another Gujarati is one of the biggest superstars of Norway. Dette satte meg som østkantgutt ut. Jeg skjønner så mye mere av situasjonen til de (indiske, pakistanske og mange flere ) og hva de måtte gå igjennom. As someone who came to Australia at the age of 20 and after 19 years of living here and having my own family it’s still a constant inner fight to feel at home. that's how they are, our parents who just worked and kept quiet without anyone having invited them to Dagsnytt 18 to talk about freedom of speech or anything else for those who are preparing to die in a foreign country the gooey cake, or the cup of overly sweet tea serves as the cheapest and fastest ticket home the grief when a parent is about to disappear is of course not reserved for us migrant children but it gets an additional layer for us maybe because we lose our most important connection to a part of the world that they brought with them we, their children are believers and non-believers filled with shame and shameless rooted and rootless we were kids when we filled out forms for our parents called customer support on their behalf and wrote sympathy cards intended for their norwegian friends we were kids when the rest of Norway were laughing at skits where the only joke was that people were talking like our parents one day they will leave us here between the places they left behind and the places they tried to become a part of when it's our turn, we will look back to reassure ourselves, and them that we managed to get one step closer

As an immigrant (from South Asia) and living in Canada for 22 years, I just felt this song. At times, it felt personal. Only if people knew the struggles that immigrants go through. This is how you unite the music and people around the world. I wish I knew Norwegian (so that I could sing along) but this is truly an amazing story and music.
