If catchers get in because of D, then SS should too. Because of his weaker arm than Ozzie, he had to pop up quicker, or stay on his ass, belly, back or knees to get the out. Best ever defensive shortstop. I get sick of hearing about Ozzie Smith, Ozzie has nothing on Vizquel offensively or defensively and the fact that Smith and Aparicio are both in the HOF with lower batting averages and lower fielding percentages should make Vizquel automatically in the HOF.
@satoshisata34092 жыл бұрын
I just have same opinion with you. Ozzie didn't have Omar's bear hand catches. Ozzie had poor arm strength and his throws from the hall couldn't reach directly to the firstbase man. I wonder why Vizquel has been struggling on the HOF voting.

@satoshisata3409 Omar was on a good track for awhile, gaining votes each year, but then there was some scuttlebutt about domestic abuse issues. Does not seem to be in the man's character to me, but perhaps there is a hidden side...
@mrmacross Жыл бұрын
C'mon, man. Ozzie didn't have Omar's hands, but nobody had Ozzie's range. Ozzie's deservedly in the Hall. I think Omar is getting screwed by the fact he played in the steroid era, so while his OPS is better than Ozzie's, his OPS+ is lower. But saying Ozzie isn't as good defensively as Omar seems short-sighted. Vizquel is, in a lot of ways, more entertaining to watch than Ozzie, but when it comes to turning ground balls into outs, Ozzie is second to none.

I think he was a better defensive SS than Ozzie Smith, and here's why: Ozzie played the vast majority of his game on astroturf, and rarely got bad bounces. Top fielding Shortstops going back to 1950: 1. Ozzie Smith 2. Cal Ripken Jr. 3. Andrelton Simmons 4. Ernie Banks 5. Luis Aparicio This is documented fact in terms of fielding percentage and chances. So Vizquel isn't even top 5 since 1950. And isn't top 10 if you include players from before 1950. Also, he played 24 years and never got 3,000 hits. So there's another knock against him. That being said, as someone who watched him play; I definitely believe he deserves a spot in the HOF. He was very good for a long time. That should count for something.

You can’t say Omar Viziquel isn’t top 5 because of his chances and fielding percentage but then you put Andrelton Simmons at number 3. Simmons has HALF the amount of chances as Vizquel and Omar’s fielding percentage is better. How does that make sense? Plus, you add in the fact that Omar has the least amount errors ever made in a season(3), most career double plays turned, is tied for the longest streak without an error by a SS ever and has the best career fielding percentage for a SS. How is not a top 5 fielding shortstop?

@@Shinobi33 and Ordonez would tell you Vizquel was better. It doesn’t make sense how he can better when Vizquel has him beat in every defensive stat you look at and could make all of the same plays. Being the best fielder isn’t just about being the most athletic or physically gifted, you have to have the stats as well. Vizquel may not have been as physically talented as Ordonez but let’s not act like Vizquel was leaps and bounds behind him. Vizquel may have been slightly less athletic but he was still making all the same plays as Ordonez and he did it while posting better stats in all categories and gathered more accolades and records. If two players can make all the same plays defensively but one has the best fielding percentage all time, most double plays turned all time, longest streak without making an error, least amount of errors ever made in a single season, 9 seasons with making less than 10 errors and 11 gold gloves, don’t you think that would make him a better fielder?
