Hilarious as always 😂 I’ve not got a Z8 yet but do have a Z9 and the electronic shutter can be set to its lowest volume so nobody else can hear except the photographer which is perfect for me so I don’t need those confirmation bars. The high efficiency format is brilliant and save a stack load of disc space without losing any noticeable dynamic range. So much so that I’m not worried about the raw small and medium anymore. Love your videos they’re so much fun 👍👍

In all, the Z8 is quite an achievement. I understand that the weatherproofing of the Z9 is still superior, as is heat dissipation, given that the Z8 is a smaller form factor and a bit more than half of its body is constructed of carbon fiber, which actually acts as an insulator. This is why a number of reviewers have noted issues with overheating when pushing the limits of the camera. The dual CFexpress slots of the Z9 will also be missed by those of us who use the second card slot as a backup. Ever since the F3, however, I've never shot with a camera that wasn't gripped, and if you've seen the Z8 with its MB-N12 grip, the height of the Z8 actually exceeds that of the Z9, so if you always shoot gripped like I do, this might be a consideration as well -- but again, packing in sooooo many of the Z9's features into a smaller, lighter body, along with a savings of about $1500 US, is quite an achievement. As a quick aside (to address Omar's point about shutter blackout) although you can easily enable viewfinder blackout when shooting photos (option A under d14 "Release timing indicator" -- as of firmware 3.1 in the Z9) if you turn on photo flicker reduction, regardless of your d14 setting, the screen will black out for the entire duration of your exposure as well.
@HJN67
@HJN67 Жыл бұрын
If you miss the good old blackout when taking pictures, the Z 9 has an option in d14: Release Timing Indicator. I have no idea what menu it will be in the Z 8 as the manual is not out yet. I also don't know it will work for you.

Yes, the first thing I did after the specs for the Z8 were released was to weigh my Z7ii with my L-bracket on it. There is only 30 grams difference which is pretty cool to know. I thought there would be much more of a weight discrepancy between it and the Z8.

@@USGrant21st Go to the gym /s You need the "heavy" (still light compared to old DSLRs) body to balance out the lenses - the 24-70 does not balance well with the Z6 because it's too light & too small (not enough grip). Would be interesting to share more experiences in "I use the Nikon Z8 - 2.0" now FW 2.0 is there. As to the camera selecting the wrong face, I have eye/face recognition AI AF on, but also 3D tracking. Point the 3D tracking box, press AF-ON, it locks, and recompose. It's like superglue (that's a personalisation choice). And you can still have, say, auto exposure under the shutter release that will lock its exposure when you half press and then stays the same when you recompose. In one motion you can now lock 3D AF, measure and lock exposure in one composition and shoot in another, and have a perfect shot. I think it's also possible to have different AF settings under shutter release versus AF-ON.

Fun and funny as always, Omar. I agree that the Z9 is bigger than I want it to be, and heavier. That said, the Z8 isn't my second camera (Currently shooting the Z9). You and many others touched on things in your review, and my comments are in those places, so I won't repeat them here. What I find interesting is that from day one, I've shot silently with only flashing bar confirmation. My friends with Canon R3 have sound turned on. The only time it's ever bothered me (to have the sound off) is when you shoot vertically and forget to lock the vertical shooting button and your palm presses it for extended periods (second) while moving around. Otherwise, the lack of sound confirmation has never bothered me - but I can appreciate why others want it - especially shooting a paid event. Thank you for your time and efforts. Nikon, or who else ! When you sound engineer a better shutter sound, be sure to emulate the shutters opening time as well ! When switching to a Sony A7 I miss the first curtain sound, so I don't get the feedback of an accidental long exposure. As I only hear one shutter actuation., contrary to DSLR when you actually hear the real shutter time.

@@jayforcinema Yeah, that's the "problem" with L-mount: not enough people are invested. I'm invested in Fuji, which allows me some room to breathe, and being APS-C, I don't think I will ever get rid of the system, just because of how nice it is. However, I'm thinking of upgrading, and although I initially thought of going with the Lumix S5II - great video options, lens selection, third party support - I realize that I'd rather go with a system that delivers ultimate performance across the board (hybrid shooting). So, personally I'm investing in Nikon soon - I'd say stick with L-mount and save all the money until 2025 to then get a used Z8 ;)

One subject I'm not sure I've seen covered for event photography with a mirrorless camera is losing the ability to use a speedlite's infrared focus assist beam. Focusing in low light situations like dark night clubs isn't the same without it. Sure, Nikon bodies have its own green af beam but it's more intrusive and can easily be blocked by your hand. What was the Z8's af like during the wedding reception? I've never used the Z9 before either and I heard it's low light af is better than the Z6ii. Also, small RAW is my fav!! Sad to hear it's gone.

Not a bad plan, Philip. Those of us that purchased the Z9 out of the gate (and love it) are still waiting for a D500 replacement. Question to you is, if you were doing the replacement, what would you change/upgrade - other than just to a mirrorless version. Faster frame rate for raw? (i.e. 30 fps) Slightly higher number of megapixels? Limited video? I do agree with you. I love the Z9, but want the advantages of a crop sensor body (not just the Z9 in DX mode) with slightly tweaked features. Not sure where in the pipeline or timeline that will be. So for now, Z9 with the tap of a function button can go from FX to DX mode, but the RAW fps doesn't increase.

You just earned a subscriber and I am planning to upgrade into a mirrorless from my workhorse Nikon D750. You covered the most important factor for me and it's the grip size. When I walked into B&H Photo store, I was so disappointed to see the fit of Z6 and Z7. Then I held the Z9 and my bank account was crying 😛. Although I'll have to save up a lot for a Z8, but it's still covering all the grounds for the kinds of work that I do. I would really appreciate if you could cover a topic where you would take the Z8 for a prolonged spin into a bad weather day, like on a pouring rain situation with and without the FTZ adapter. I am really into capturing inclement weather situations and I wanna be in the know if this camera can handle a situation where an user is out and about and suddenly you're caught up in a situation where you don't have a rain cover on. Thank you for your detailed and informative content on the Nikon Z8.

Better buy the grip because with only one battery, the life of which isn't that long, you will be disappointed. This camera does not and cannot take an En-El 18 series battery, so even with the grip, you'll need more batteries to shoot all day. This is a $4,000 camera and with the grip, almost $4,500. Save some extra money and buy the Z9. I own the Z9 and have been shooting Nikon bodies for 40 years and I have ZERO interest in the Z8. The honest Nikon reps will tell existing Nikon shooters who own Z9s that they don't need the Z8, NOT EVEN AS BACK UP CAMERA!

Of course you could get a z5, the z5 II, then z5 III for that money. Roughly. But then I think this z8 now will be about as good as a z5 III in about 10 yrs from now...😊 My experience with the upoer tier bodies is that the next sequel, after about four years is not that much an improvement really worth upgrading. In this sense skip one, means a z8 now would be fine until there's a z8 III (at least). That got a bit shaken up because of the transition from dSLR to mirrorless, but I would say not an issue anymore as mirrorless is mature now. I went D3 to...almost d5/d850...but as mirrorless was on the horizon I waited a bit and went early Z instead.

Hi Omar, great vid! Where did you get the plate for your Z6ii that allows you to add a space for your finger!! Please let us know. You're right, the Z8 is overkill for portraits, but for sports and wildlife, it's the future.

Dang, just purchased the Leica q2 reporter and was planning to sell my Nikon Z gear to get the funds. My all time favorite is the D700 which I still have. Really love the Z8.I guess the Fujifilm xt4 and xe4 have to go. Will keep the grIII for sure. Thanks for showing the D700 and Z8 side by side for comparison.

So great the reviews of Omar. For me one of the best reviews . Jared Polin is ok too ....but I like how Omar was sincere too. So how it compare the AF tracking from the Z6 II? is so much acurate?

Seems like a no brainer as an upgrade from a D850? I assume the video performance, especially AF in 4 and 8K is way superior? Great review.

Love your videos and the humour! I've been googling around trying to figure this out but haven't found a solution and was hoping you might help! I'm so used to slog3 and over exposing using the light meter but the z8 has no exposure tools when shooting video. How do you overcome this internally? Any advice would be much appreciated. Thanks!!

amazing! question did it overheat while video recording? how is the ibis? I am trying to use this camera for POV vlogging with 15mins clips at a time. How would that hold up even if shooting at 6k? Thank you so much.

Great review! Do you think a firmware could add the Small, Medium, Large RAW file? That would be really nice.

Unless one is constantly shooting something running or flying, just go with the Z6 II imo. The price difference is crazy. One can get 2 great lenses for that money. Or go on two great vacations, if lenses are already present. Plus - I prefer to have the option of mechanical shutter.

Nice review Omar. I currently shoot a D5 for pretty much everything. I’m looking for a street/travel lightweight every day carry. Would Z8 fit the bill? Also considering a Q3.

As an event pg in busy people environment, do u still rely on subject tracking as in ur previous video, or has Z8 somehow allowed u to switch from that? Thx
