Glad you returned to it. I bought mine last October, my first proper camera after a long time just using the smartphone. I was looking at entry level Canons, then saw a local (South African) review of the XS-10 on KZbin and decided to go for it. I absolutely love the camera, and moving to Fujifilm meant I discovered your and Pal2Tec's great channels. Which I binge on. I thought both of you gave the XS-10 too little love, primarily due it departing from the Fujifilm look and feel. For someone like me who didn't know Fujifilm, there is nothing to miss, so it's really really a great buy and a great way to enter the Fujifilm world. That said, I'm a retro junkie and an aesthete so I now also CRAVE the dials and the the look of those silver editions... I am now constantly looking for a cheap second hand XT-20 or something to buy just so I can play with buttons. I love your channel. You're a great photographer and an exceptional teacher.

As a former X-T30 owner, I don't see any valid reason, apart from "the looks", for why one would buy X-T20 if you already have X-S10. The X-S10 is a camera with better ergonomics, newer sensor than X-T20 (better lowlight performance) and IBIS (perhaps most important - not even the newer T30 has IBIS). I had the X-T30 but never used the top shutter dial. It's just really stiff and impractical/slow to turn while shooting, so I was usually leaving the dial in the T mode and then using the front+back dials like a PASM camera.

Got the camera 3 days ago. Took it out for a basketball session with my boys. I had X-T3, and ... return it. The X-S10 is an amazing little camera, best for video, great for photos. The 18-55 XF lens is sharp enough. The lack of IBIS on X-T3 change my mind to keep it. In hand, X-S10 is like a glove.

Hey Omar. I've had the XS-10 for over a year, and have been extremely happy with it. I use it for everything from landscape and astro to street and macro. I had considered the XT-4 instead, but chose the XS-10 because of its smaller and lighter body (a big asset for travel, hiking and street); much better ergonomics; and the fact that it has most of the features of the XT-4 I most care about (eg, sensor, IBIS, flippy screen) for half the price. I've had no issue with the buttons/dials etc -- very easy to put anything you want immediate access to (including focus mode & eye detection) on any of a wide selection of customizable buttons.

@@sichiamogabor Yes, got the X-H2 late last year, but have kept the X-S10 as a second body, and still use it when I want a smaller and lighter body. Before I got the X-H2 I used the X-S10 for everything, including landscapes in Iceland and elsewhere, and was very happy with the results. It does have smaller batteries than the X-T4 and the new X-H2/S, but it is easy enough to carry a few spares if you anticipate extended shoots. I think the power bank option is mostly relevant if you are shooting in one place, rather than wandering around. I expect to keep and use the X-S10 for some time. Note that there is much speculation that sometime in 2023 Fuji will release the next edition in the X-S series (presumably an X-S20?). The rumors suggest it might have the new 40mp sensor and better AF, but I don’t think anyone outside Fuji knows anything, including when any new model would be released.

I love my X-S10 but I think all your points about it, negative and positive, are very fair. I think it's a camera you need to spend quite a bit of time with so that you can customize it to your liking. I now have the left top dial set to ISO and the AEL button set to switch focus modes. That makes it a little more like other Fuji cameras. I completely agree with the shutter setting switching dials though. That is weird and not user-friendly at all. Thankfully, I don't shoot in shutter priority too often. Overall, I think it's a great camera, especially for those new to the Fuji ecosystem because PASM does not feel strange at all. The ergonomics, IBIS, quick video switching and price are a winning combo.

I was somewhat ambivalent about the X-S10 when I first bought it, but liked it much better after using it awhile. One thing I liked immediately was the grip. I didn’t have to buy a metal hand grip to provide a secure hold, as I have with all my other Fuji cameras. I never understood why Fuji used such skimpy grips. I agree the placement of the Q button is awkward. I programmed the AF-ON button to be the Q button and use the marked Q button for something else (and for the in-camera RAW processing where it remains linked). I also programmed the AEL button as the ISO button and use the marked ISO button for White Balance. I don’t use the red REC button, so I reprogrammed it to Photometry. I too miss the little Focus Mode dial, but putting Focus Mode in the Q Menu makes it easy enough to change. I do think the camera could have used a couple more programmable buttons. As for the joystick, the joysticks on Fuji cameras worried me initially since they seemed fragile. But none of mine have broken, and I actually find them easier and faster to use than the flatter type of joystick (joypad?) on other camera brands. I wholly agree that the flat Menu and Back buttons are a terrible design choice. I was unable to find them by touch, so I bought a set of adhesive enamel red dots from Eyelet Outlet and put one of the medium-sized ones on the Back button, where it fits exactly and has stayed on the camera. This enables me to find the Back button by feel, and since I know the Menu button is directly above it, I can find that one by feel too. I added a SmallRig base plate because I like having an Arca-Swiss base for tripod use. It also adds some height to the grip. With these modifications, I have a very useful, not too bulky camera that produces excellent images. It’s a lot of camera for the price.
@Festvangelist
@Festvangelist 2 жыл бұрын
The buttons are easy to reprogram for sure. You can also assign 4 ADDITIONAL COMMANDS on the rear screen as well. I never owned. I find the speed of the joystick very fast and easy to find, so no problem vs. the dial toggle approach which I had on Sony.
@bobc.6419
@bobc.6419 2 жыл бұрын
@@Festvangelist Yes, screen gestures are available, but I have found the implementation to be poor. When I tried them, I found that half the time, when I tried to select an autofocus point, I would trigger a gesture - because my finger would slide a tiny bit. So I think the gestures as designed are too small. If each gesture required a 2" length of travel, that would work beautifully.

I'm sure the X-S10 is a great camera and one I wouldn't mind owning but as a 10 year Fuji X shooter the only major complaint I have with fuji is that there is never any consistency with button placements and sometimes dials and switches. I recently went back to Nikon but in the Z system and They got it right with buttons and controls with all their cameras so far. I can use any FX Z body and not lose a step where with my six remaining Fuji cameras I have to re-adjust my muscle memory when switching between bodies. There is always some buttons that are opposite from the last camera... and yes, the AF is WAY better and snappier on the Nikon Z in my experience. Nikon just needs a couple more iterations of their DX Z bodies and a couple more XF like lenses and they will start taking some of that Fuji marketshare. Although Fuji is still king of the APS-C, they should be worried going forward if they don't address their mix bag of controls and [today's] sub-par AF.

@@Szili0 I would actually recommend the Z5 unless you need a non-IBIS APS-C sensor at 20Mp. @@Szili0 here is what you got to think about; Brand new the Z50 is basically $1k, the Z5 is $1300. {keep notice of specials, I got mine for $1100, that's including the FTZ]. So for $300 more you are getting IBIS, FX at 24Mp vs. 20Mp on the DX sensor, dual SD slots and more robust button ergonomics control. I did Nikon (DSLR) DX, Sony crop (APS-C) and Fuji crop since digital cameras hit the market and the Z5 is allowing me to use every part of my F lens optics. Yeah, I agree with most of what you said! For me, the grip is the biggest positive, for example, I prefer the 50-140 with my X-S10 than with my X-T4 or any big lense because of it. The feel is just amazing. Another very good positive, often overlooked, is the custom settings on the PASM dial where you can program not only a custom fillm simulation but also almost any other settings (wich can be a little too much sometimes ) having not only a diifferent look but also a different way of shooting (you can even circumvent the lack of the MCS dial that way, for example, or get a setting for street, one for flash photography, one for video, one for night, etc. I think - but don't quote me one that - that you can even set 3 different ISO ranges for each custom setting) right at a turn of the dial. Last, small but cool, positive: the pop up flash, very convient on that type of camera when you just wanna grab a quick shot... And I keep my main flash just for my A camera and don't need a second flash to take space in the bag (when/if i don't think I need one). One the other side, one very big negative for me is the second top dial witch can be programmed, but is laggy, I use it as my exposure compensation dial but the experience is less than ok between the lack of any marking and the laggyness. And the lack of programmable buttons is sometimes a lil bit frustrating (I changed the video dial into WB AND still regret a lot that you can't click the front and/or rear dial) But overall, it's a small, lightweigth, high quality and very nice experience. I had it for a year before getting the X-T4 and i had a very cool time with it solo and then it became a very cool B cam. Of course it don't do all the things the X-T3 does but if you can forgive the lack of top dials and need IBIS it's a very strong package at a similar price.

I think I can live with it as It is something similar to my Canon 6D. (Just that the Canon 6D is too heavy to carry around when you are on a family trip)! Thanks again :) Awesome review! Looking forward to getting my hands on this camera!

I sold some of my MicroFourThirds gear to get this Camera and the 23, 35 and 50 f2 lenses. I was pleasantly surprised with the ISO performance. I also love the Standard Provia colors. It went so far that I stayed with those colors instead of feeling the need to colorgrade or use presets. With my MicroFourThirds images I was never really satisfied with the colors. I can also get great SOOC images in black and white. Love that! It is also great playing around with the jpeg recipes. I don’t like editing photos in LR or PS that much. I rather prefer the photography than the post production. So I am pretty happy for now.

I sold my X-T3 and some Panasonic gear to buy X-S10 and 100V. The X-S10 embodies so many cameras I have had in the past - Olympus, Minolta, Nikon, Panasonic - but is just such fun to use, easy to catch our fast moving granddaughter! Yet customisable and superb images. It’s definitely a keeper - until the X-S20!

I switched from X-T30 to X-S10, and I also think missing drive mode switch is a huge pain. The way to get around this is to set back LCD sweep to control it directly. And similar to lots of the other things on X-S10 (PASM modes change dial default, for example), it just takes some muscle memory to get used to. I have no regret getting X-S10 because IBIS is a huge life quality improvement. However, you can't help but wonder why not just do a X-T40 with a slightly bigger body and put IBIS in? That plus an improved auto focus will be my perfect Fujifilm camera.

Hey Omar, thanks for coming back for a follow up review. I'm considering getting the XS10 , moving from the Sony a7RII. Mainly due to the size (FF lenses are massive & heavy). I'm mostly going to use it for family travel photos, but I'm concerned that the AF won't be able to keep up with the toddlers.

You are one of the craziest camera reviewers I've watched on KZbin. Haha I think your review here basically is a summary of what a Fujifilm X series user/fan would feel about the camera. The first and last Fujifilm camera I've owned was the HS20 which is far more "traditional" modern than the retro/vintage layout of the X series. I think this camera's design is perfect for someone like me who is considering getting a Fuji but don't have any experience with film cameras or any of the X series. If Canon only offers IBIS on a crop sensor mirrorless maybe I would stay in their camp...

Fuji has the best tree/branch detection autofocus 😅 Bought the X-S10 one year ago as my first mirrorless and I love it. Mainly for travel videos and it works great. Compact size with IBIS and Eterna… you cannot beat that! Imo the IBIS works really good with the XF18-55mm in video mode. Autofocus could be better, but it’s still acceptable. I never used Sony or canon, so I got no comparison 😅

Good video! Fun too :-) Well, I've got the X-S10 for a few years now, about 12000 clicks at the moment, and I agree with some of your remarks: the IBIS is great, its size and weight, the massive grip (Why don't they put it on a X-T5???), the built quality. The tilting screen is just MEGA, even the X-T5 should have it. And yes, as you found out, if you don't use it you can "close' it and it's protected. How genius is that!? The Q button can be programmed where you want it, idem for the switch between Single and Continuous Focus, so that's no issue. A pity that it's not WR of course, but I've noticed that it's doesn't mind a bit of rain. But at the end of the vid you really are getting VERY finicky: these buttons are too flush, that joy stick is too small (while it does a perfect job!), etc etc. But I get your "problem": if the buttons always are on the same place, you can use them with the eyes closed, and it's frustrating when you don't find them where they "should" be. But on the other hand, the positions of these buttons do not impact the quality of the images taken. So don't lose your perspective here. A good remark though, was about the cramped EVF. I've had a X-H1 in the past for some time, and god I loved that EVF! I wear spectacles, so my eye can't be as close to the EVF as it should be. On the X-H1 that was never an issue: I could see everything the EVF projected in one blink of an eye. But with the cramped EVF on the X-S10 it's like I'm watching through a narrow tunnel, so I've got to move literally my head to see if my framing is OK. For a while I wanted to buy the X-T5, you know, IBIS, WR, the best EVF you can find, faster everything... but at the moment I lose too much money selling the X-S10 (second hand price is max 2/3 of new!) So I decided to keep the X-S10. And now that I've discovered the 27mm f2.8mm WR pancake lense it's for sure become a keeper! Because for a while now I was looking into buying an X100V, or even the VI. But I discovered that the combi X-S10 + 27mm F2.8 WR is almost exactly the same size and dimensions! And for much less money! And with a bigger grip, and a better flip screen. You see? The X-S10 is simply one of the best camera's they ever made. Just ignore the "strange" layout of the buttons and focus on its fantastic qualities! Good choice, Mo !

Hi Omar, Great review! In late 2019, I got the XT-20 after watching many of your videos. Because of the lockdowns, I didn't get to use it much until now. Recently, I shot over 7,000 images of kids in my daughter's school's sports activities. The initial images were disappointing, because I had no idea how to operate the camera. After studying a manual, I got much better results. I hope to someday upgrade.

Just put one on each of those flats little buttons on the back and one on the Q button and you are good to go. They are clear or black so not an esthetic thing, and your fingers will be sooo happy. I've had my X-S10 for about 17 months now and I love it. It's my first 'real' camera and I think, like many others have said, that it's the perfect gateway into the Fuji world. My only real complain is the lack of weather sealing. If they ever release a successor I hope they will add that. Though I do also agree with the other negative points that you brought up. edit: One more thing I want to mention is that I think they should have made the blank dial on the left the ISO dial and the ISO button the film simulation button. That's what I have them set as and this makes the camera SO much nicer to use. I don't know why Fuji didn't make that the default.

Greetings from Germany. My 2nd time watching your x-s10 videos. I’m now in Fujifilm purgatory. I went from the x-t20 to the x-s10 and loved the change. The ‘dials and buttons everywhere’ was daunting at first. So I set up my x-s10 to easily give me the stuff I actually used. Last week I bought my first “BIG” Fuji camera, the x-h1, for a good price. It IS BIG! I wouldn’t trust my hand strap on it, nor do I need one. I love getting back to the world of dials and buttons. However, there is no easy way to ‘cancel’ all settings and pop into full (help! Save me!) auto mode like the PASM dial can do. (I messed up a spontaneous portrait shoot directly after a macro shoot:). PROS, besides grip and IBIS is easy focus mode again, viewfinder, and I find the photos are better (but they shouldn’t be). Today I discovered that the x-h1 has a ‘linear focus’ option!!! Now my lenses focus like vintage lenses in manual mode!!! (Left=closer, right=further away, basta). AMAZING low-light performance. CONS: The dials are stiff (but this x-h1 is used). I love the flip-out screen and miss it here dearly. It EATS batteries!!!! I can leave the house with a full battery and a prayer on the x-s10 but won’t even think of doing that with the H1. 3 battery minimum, I say. No wonder the power grip comes WITH the H1 as a kit. It’s almost useless without at least the extra batteries. It’s heavy as is. Battery grip is better but heavier. (May need a bigger tripod:) Bottom line: The x-s10 for ease of use, the x-h1 for learning and passing on to your grandkids along with your mother’s cast-iron cookware. I plan to leave my x-s10 on the shelf for 2 full weeks before picking it up again, just to truly feel the difference. Side note: I think the “s” that Fuji is using denotes the style of the X-S10, thus the X-H2S has that grip and the PASM, plus instant movie button etc. The guys at Fuji should come out with the X-H2, no ’s’ which brings back the dials of the X-H1. Thanks for all you do for us.

Just got my hands on an X-H1. I don't think I can look my x-s10 in the EVF again! Used X-H1 has similar GRIP, IBIS, is weather sealed. I've seen x-s10 body used for the price I paid for this used X-H1+battery grip:) in excellent condition. Don't mind the extra size. When I bought the x-s10, the x-h1 was WAY out of my price range.

Yes, the X-S10 had pains, like the no aperture in shutter priority mode. I have an x-h1 and BOTH have that great grip, BTW. Just had my hands on the X-H2s for 5 seconds. For feel, I like the s10. Kinda like having a compact car but it's a Mercedes:) TIP: Set logical swipe motions. Left towards the missing focus mode dial =focus modes UP towards EVF = face detection (or use little button next to EV) DOWN towards tripod mount =IBIS on-off RIGHT = Film sims (perhaps) When I'm using EVF, I can swipe, then change these settings with joy stick easily The X-H1 has SEVEN custom settings spaces. The X-S10 has only FOUR. However EVERYTHING the camera is set to can be stored under a single custom setting. Flying birds? C1 baby! Shutter speed, burst mode, continuous focus, custom AF-C mode setting, jpg only, electronic shutter, auto ISO 3, film sim if I wanted; all ready to go with a simple switch to C1. Can't do that with my fancy X-H1. Wonder what the new X-H2s does with it's SEVEN custom modes? Breaking news: The X-S10 will soon be able to use the 2 new Fuji lenses:) Would LOVE an 18-140mm PZ

Hi Omar, there is a dedicated shooting nodes button on the back (next to where you switch to reviewing photos) so 8t is actually fast to jump to burst mode. You do have to navigate to your selection, so it isn't quite as fast as a switch, but beats using the Q menu! Thanks for the reviews 👍

Appreciate your thoughts on the X-S10 Omar. I have owned mine since last May and overall it's a great little camera. Here are my Like/Dislikes; Likes-image quality is superb for stills & video, IBIS is great, Mode Dial is preferable to me, good customizable menu options, nice flippy screen, good burst mode. Dislikes-poor battery life, those 2 flush buttons on the back you mentioned, tiny joystick and no D-Pad, no dedicated White Balance button, EVF could have been a bit higher res, autofocus needs a big overhaul in the future-they seem to be lagging behind competitors now (even OM). Problems that I have solved with workarounds; punch-in to check focus (assigned the centre of joystick), Turning Face/Eye detection ON/OFF (assigned the Fn button next to EVF), No dedicated focus mode button (assigned the AEL button), Exposure Compensation (assigned the rear command dial).

If Fujifilm made a model which took this control scheme, added weather sealing and the better battery - I think that would be an interesting prospect. I'd love to know how many people have switched to Fujifilm because the X-S10 has that more familiar control scheme (for those coming from other manufacturers). So basically an X-T4 but with the PASM layout and decent grip. Perhaps it's too late now and this would overlap too much with the upcoming X-H2 (assuming there's going to be a more affordable version with 26-ish MP). Then again, Fujifilm make so many camera models, what difference would an extra one make! 😉

It definitely needs to be WR. I got some sea water splashes on mine and the joystick went haywire with the AF point scrolling across the display uncontrollably. Took some resolve to dry it out and work the joystick control to rub the contacts clean. Seems to have recovered, but honestly for the very minor splashes it got I was astonished at how easily the joystick control was affected. Lesson learnt and now I'm completely paranoid about water and dust ingress!

I’ve owned the X-S10 for about six months, and had ambivalent feelings about it. I used it very little because it was just a backup to my X-T4. But, recently my X-T4 became unavailable, so I’ve been using the X-S10 full time. Surprise! I really love it now! As an old retired pro-emphasis on “old”-I’m always looking now for photo equipment that’s lighter and smaller. The X-S10 is both, and combined with the excellent, deep grip, it’s so much more comfortable for my old hands, especially on long shoots. Control wise, using the camera more has really helped my muscle memory, to the point that now this PASM control setup doesn’t bother me at all. I found one of the keys for me was to program the left control dial to control the MCS focus mode. It’s just as easy now to change this function as it is on the X-T4. Overall, I think when my X-T4 is returned, I’ll still choose to use the S-X10 most often unless the weather is miserable. It’s a great camera!

Great balanced review, as usual, and pretty spot on. I got the xs10 to compliment the xt4...love that both have ibis and flippy screens. Love the xt4 stills/video switch. The xs10 film simulation dial makes it so easy to change sims thus so much fun to play with it (ok, so I'm easily amused), and the grip reminds me of the grip on the Canon Powershot S3 IS which was also a joy to hold. Working around weaknesses of a camera while enjoying its strengths has always been true, even in film camera days, so nothing new there. For me, these 2 cameras make a nice pair and both are fun to use despite their differences. Or because of them. If a "perfect" camera existed, there would only be one camera...I like the choice.

If you're not totally into the x-t systems, the x-s10 'non-Fuji-likeness' isn't a deal breaker. The viewfinder tells me what wheel does what. The stiff on and off switch is actually very welcome. A lot of times I record video, or have the camera hooked up to PC and thus Auto off disabled. I forget to turn Auto Power off (5mins) back on after the session. I put it in the bag and the On button accidentally toggles over, and then you reach into your bag for your camera later only to realise it is burning hot and chewed up all the battery power. heh. A stiffer switch would help minimize that sorta thing occurring. I have to take the battery out on occasions just so this doesn't happen (like a good habit to get into). It feels like you're not using the C1-4 modes on the dial to get around most of all your niggles tbh. I've owned the XT4 for over a year, I don't use the joystick or toggle between C, S and M on the switch, it pretty much lives in AF Tracking AF.C.

Seems like I avoid most/all of your concerns since I only shoot in M mode and with manual lenses (I've had four Fuji AF lenses and hated and sold them all, mostly because of their crap manual focusing). I would prefer the traditional Fuji film-style design of the XT4 etc but I wanted the fat grip because I like to let'r dangle. If they ever come out with an XT-style design but with proper grip, I'd go for that. I've had this thing for about a year and it has been great. I use vintage Oly and Nikon glass, but now have a 23mm f1.4 ttartisans, which was $100 and is primo. One great idea I got from your vid is to switch the manual focus check from pushing in the togglythinger to the AF-ON button. As for the flushness of those lower buttons, never occurred to me that it was a neg.

I would have bought the XS10 too if it had been available. So I ended up with the XT30. The directly accessible settings are a huge advantage and led me to Fujifilm. I see the advantage of the XS10 mainly in the IBIS. The handgrip is also better than on the XT30/3/4. Now I have a compact camera and screw a handgrip on it so that it doesn't fall out of my hand...well.The image quality is more or less the same for the new Fujis with the X-Trans 4 sensor. Which is a great thing because you can choose a camera depending on your budget without sacrificing the results. Greetings from Luxemburg

Thank you so much for this detailed and awesome review, I really love your work! I'm just planning to buy a camera, but I don't know which to choose. I'm thinking about X-S10, but I read like a ton of times,that it's battery life is really not the best and the other camera is the Sony A6400 I would only use it for landscape, travel and street photography. What's your opinion about this or could you recommend something else? Thank you so much for your time and help!😀✌️

I've been using it a lot! I've done all sorts of (sometimes unnecessary) things with it! I've built a cinema rig with it last week but mostly I love it for casual-ish video production.

Good video, Omar. I like the X-S10, but I get frustrated by some of the design choices. As you pointed out, removing the focus mode switch was unnecessary and a bad idea. Due to an accident with my previous camera, I am now deciding between X-T30 ii and the X-S10. Both have shortcomings. I'd like to see an X-T40 with the new grip and battery placement like the X-S10, IBIS, and a "3-way" tilt screen, rather than the X-T30's 2-way tilt, or the X-S10's fully articulating one.

Great video, thanks Omar. I wish all cameras would adopt the Wheel/D-Pad 4-way combo selector format of Canon/Panny (Including Nikon lol)... so intuitive. Looking forward to the X-H2!
