There seems to be a lot of Fujifilm shooters who switch to Nikon. I haven't seen Canon shooters switching to Nikon, but I hear both Sony and Fujifilm shooters switching. Could be interesting to know, if there's a way to find out about this, if this is just pure anecdotal or there is something to it.

Omar: I apologize for singing with the chorus, but your posts are among my favourites anywhere. The reasons? (1) you're entertaining -- save me from the earnest academic reviews and posts; (2) you're knowledgeable, and your views are practical -- your choices and compromises of weight v. "specs" v. . . . . tradeoffs . . . always seem to match mine, and are always considered and self-questioning; and (3) YOUR PHOTOS ARE GREAT. It's a pleasure seeing great images, with wonderful (but frequently simple) compositions that call attention to your subject, your story, your place -- all without calling attention to the photographer. Your stuff doesn't scream "I'm Omar and look at me even though you can't because I'm behind the lens!"; rather, your photos just say "look at me -- I'm great!" Keep it up, sir!

I actually decided to choose the Nikon Z6II over a Canon R6 because of Nikon’s mirrorless lens selection. I know at first Nikon was really criticized for the direction they were taking in regards to lenses, but I feel like now their lineup is far more fleshed out than Canon’s. I hope you’re enjoying the Z-mount as much as it sounds like you are! As always, great content!

@shlawchablaas
@shlawchablaas 2 жыл бұрын
@@cj7073 I think a big criticism at the time was that they started with f/1.8 lenses, the 50, 85, and 35; people presumed they weren’t pro lenses because they weren’t 1.4 or 1.2. Then they released the 58mm f0.95 before releasing a more practical professional 1.2 lens, which people found reasons to complain about. They’re all really good though, and the 1.8 lenses make a lot of sense since they’re really well corrected but still relatively small, and good high ISO performance makes up for letting in less light. Still, I understand, we all always want MORE BOKEH!

Christopher frost just reviewed the 24-120 and he said it’s one of the best he’s ever tested. I do the same Job as you Omar so I know why you love the 24-70 2.8 or better yet why you “need” it more than love it. I too need it but I use the 24-120g vr and for the event work it’s great! I realized that I’m usually at 3.5-4 anyway when using the 2.8g I hate that lens too heavy and carrying it all day shows up on my body the next day especially when the you add a speed light. Check out the new version of the 24-120 very versatile. They are also releasing the 28-75 2.8 let’s see how good it is Matt Irwin has one just unboxed it so reviews will be coming it’s about 1100

Hey Omar, thanks for the great video and content. I am a travel and portrait photography and love the Nikon Z6 and Z7 cameras. The Z mount lenses are superb in their sharpness and rendering. I also purchased the Z-mount 50mm f/1.8 S lens. The resolution, color and rendering are superb. I'm seriously considering the new Nikon 24-120mm f/4 S lens for travel and general use. As mentioned the eye autofocus and tracking are not as good as with Canon and Sony offerings but the color rendition and dynamic range are what matter most in my work. In my photography journey I've shot just about every brand of mirrorless camera but there is something really special with the Nikon files. They offer a more cinematic rendering that suits my style and vision.

Omar, in line with the telephoto selection I got the F-mount Nikon 70-300mm f/4.5-5.6E VR AF-P (released around 2017-2018) and it's light and cheap. Because of it being an AF-P lens the focusing tech is the same than that on the Z lenses and it works fast and accurate on an FTZ adapter; I own a Z6ii and the f1.8 Z S trilogy: 35, 50 and 85 and I can't remember a time when the 70-300mm felt different when focusing...just my 2 cents

"I don't know why they don't call them Z lenses?" [1:50] The F-mount has been around for over 6 decades, and the Z-mount is likely to also be around for decades. The lens series, though, change every decade or two. For example, your 50mm f/1.8G lens was preceded by the 50mm f/1.8D lens. The D-series lenses gave distance information to the camera which could be used for better flash metering. The G-series lenses removed the aperture ring. The E-series lenses changed from a mechanical linkage to set the aperture to an electromagnetic system. With the Z-mount, there are currently the S-series and the -series, which are basically the "kit" lenses. Within a decade there could easily be another lens series, even if we cannot think of what would make it different right now.

Awesome to see an experienced non-Nikon shooter discover Nikon. Nikon optics are second to none (in most cases lol - there are some dogs but not really in the Z mount), and the Nikon RAW files are also second to none. There has been a lot of haters in recent times pretty much as a result of mirrorless AF (which has been a bit behind with Nikon) but is now pretty much caught up with the Z9. Even the Z6/7II AF system is perfectly good for event shooting as long as you know the system. Anyway, love living vicariously through you as you discover Nikon and how great it is :)

Even the first gen z6/z7 are great cameras, in particular since the AF update last autumn. Those two bodies are probably the two most underrated cameras currently and can be had at great second hand prices! Agree, the Z lenses are great, even the cheap 28/40mm ones deliver really good images. Love the approach of the new Z 1.8 series, price and size between the old F mount 1.4 and 1.8, but optics certainly as good as (if not better) the old 1.4’s. I see them as 'baby' 1.4's.

I’m not a pro - just travel, garden and some local wildlife. Nikon user. I use a 300 f4 for some portraits, butterflies and critters around my home - would like to get the 1.4x multiplier, but I’m fine for now. 24-120 f4 and 50 f1.8 are in my travel kit. Still using SLR’s - gets the job done for me. I’ve used my 35 2.0 for close in music low light shots - has worked for me. You know, when you get the pro lenses in mirrorless, the size difference with SLR is negligible. Occasionally, I use my 105 2.8 macro for closeups of flora, food and other stuff. But, I really like the 300 f4 for portraits of flowers, people, small animals/birds. It’s not a true birding lens but if I needed that, or a true wildlife long lens, it’s more affordable for me to rent. Really contented with what I have, … but I’m not a pro.

Thanks for the input. Left my Fuji X-H1 for a Nikon Z6 II and intended to go for the holy trinity of 12-24 / 24-70 / 70-200mm and nothing more. So far i ended up with the 14-30mm F/4, 24-70mm F/4, 70-200mm F/2,8 - but had to ad the 50mm F/1.8 and the 85mm F/1.8 Thought of changing the two F/4 lenses for faster ones, but i think you just talked me out of it. So far i also kept my old 85mm AI-S F/1.4 & AI-S 135mm F/2.8 for fun and experimenting. Now i have become more interested in what i can do with the 1.4 as you state that that F/stop is bokeh bokeh bokeh. I am still trying to figure out which lens to chose for macro photography. Again, thanx for a fun AND informative video

FYI, for us big-handed guys, when using the z6, 7 IIs with the 2.8 lens (pro), you will have to buy the factory battery grip. The myth that the mirrorless system is smaller becomes indisputable when it involves fast pro glass (2.8 and the like).

The 300 f4 takes the sickest portraits. The compression is insane.

Indeed! Long focal lengths like this make for great portraits. Just watch out as too much ‘compression’ can be almost as bad, in certain instances. Almost like using a wide angle can be on the opposite scale. Sports Illustrated shooters often use 300-400 mm focal lengths for the swimsuit stuff. 👍✌🏻📷😊

You would like the 24-120mm f4 S lens for events, it’s fine in low light especially with Lightroom noise reduction. Colors pop and stars out light at f9 images quality just as sharp and excellent bokeh except you have more reach. Compact and light. The 105mm F1.4 was E version, correct? All good lenses you have there👍🏻

Thanks so much for these videos. After 15yrs shooting pro with Canon, I have sold all my kit to move over to Nikon Z7 mirrorless. I have been struggling with what lenses to get, as my Canon 24-70 f2.8 was an absolute work horse. Still can't decide if I should get the new Nikon S equivalent, as it's as good as the primes, or just get that kit lens and spend more on primes. Your the second vlogger to praise that 105mm f1.4. Maybe that will do instead of an older 70-200mm, which rarely comes out of the bag. Hmm then there's the Sigma Art lenses.

Very enjoyable video, as usual! The native lenses for the Z-system are really fantastic - the only drawback is that they cost a lot. Except for one, which lately have become my favorite lens when I am with friends and family: The 40mm f2. It is light, small, fast, and quite sharp too - and costs less than 300 USD.

Other than Fuji's UI and tiny lenses, the Nikon's been terrific. I loved your pics with the Fuji's and the Nikon as just as strong. Also, solid KZbin channel; just as entertaining as it is informative. Take care.

The 24-70 f/4 is a great lens to keep around, even if you get the 2.8 version (the f/4 is so light and quite sharp for being a kit lens). I wish I had kept mine (but I traded it in to get about $400 off the 2.8 S version, which was already $300 off on sale, so I sort of went for it; I don't regret getting it of course, but I wish I had just kept my f/4 as well). I have to say that out of the Z lenses, I basically built mine to cover most FLs from 14mm to 200mm (having the 14-30 -- can't find a good reason to buy the 14-24 yet, the 24-70, the 70-200, 85 and 50). I mean for me, that pretty much covers everything I shoot (which is mainly landscape, people/portraits, and travel). I did pick up the 24-200 but I don't use that very much (mainly if I'm walking around not expecting to do anything specific, like I'm not trying to shoot people or landscapes or architecture -- so it's more of a general purpose walkaround lens -- would have rather just kept my 24-70 f/4 though and not bothered with the 24-200 though).

Great video! I mainly shoot with a Nikon d7200 but tried a Fuji Xt3 but it didn't quite give me the rich colors I was use to from my Nikon and I didn't want to jump on the Sony bandwagon. The z6 was missing things I needed but since the z6ii came out and after the lastest update I'm now ready to go to get my Nikon mirrorless camera!

I feel you about adapting certain lenses and balance. I prefer native z mount lenses on the z6 for that reason. The FX mount lenses with the FTZ can feel clunky when swapping between them. If you want an ultra convenient walk around lens check out the Nikon 24-200 z mount. Its one of my favs. I replaced my previous 70-200 2.8 as its just about good enough for most situations outdoors.

Omar, you’ve got a serious case of GAS! 😂 great choices of lens and the PFs are beautiful. I’ve got the 500pf and it’s fabulously sharp and light for the focal distance. The new 24-120 F4 looks incredible as well and by all accounts is very sharp at all focal lengths.

Maybe you should get the new FTZ adapter and see if that fixes the focusing issue, I heard it does. But yeah the Nikon Z6II has been working very well for me, there's something about it. The biggest thing for me is the grip, its comfortable (unless you are using heavy glass) and the button layout I quite like. I only have the 24-70 f/4, 50 1.8S and the 28 2.8 SE - But I wish I had something longer for certain photos and that's where I struggle. I like the idea of the 300 f/4 PF but I saw how expensive it was and its a bit out of my budget! Haha. So I'm thinking about getting the new FTZ adapter and adapting the newer Tamron 70-200 f/4 VC and see what happens. Great video Omar. I hope to see some winter photography with the Nikon soon!

But your videos are GREAT, I like the way you review gear but then add your own photos of what the gear can do “your photos are amazing by the way”, I love the way the colours POP!!! I’m a Fuji guy myself and just waiting for the XT5 or XH2 to drop in May and see if I stick with Fuji or jump ship. The autofocus needs to be improved or I’m off. Photography is my hobby, not my job. I enjoyed the video. Your images are wonderful . I have had the 24-120mm f4 S line since December. It has effectively replaced my 24-70 f4. Great lens. The 20mm 1.8 S lens is incredible as well. It could easily replace what your old Sony glass used to give you. The advantage that I have is being a Nikon user for a very long time. I often still use AIS manual focus lenses, adapted, as well as many F mount options. When I want character, simetimes those old lenses are the ticket. I have deliberately kept my Z system light, knowing that I can use my high speed F zooms, if needed. However, two F lenses you highlighted are definitely still on my wish list….the 105mm f1.4 and the 300mm. Dreamy stuff!

Yes, I kept the Nikkor 50mm 1.8 G for exactly the same reason. It simply produces beautiful images on my Z9, I did not expect that actually. It is perfectly matches with my Nikkor Z 24-70mm 4.0. I currently don't plan any other Z Mount lenses as the F Mount lenses perform so well on the Z9. I kept for example also the Tamron 70-200mm 2.8 G2 which works very, very well on the Z9.
