Just jumping in here to say that cotton yarn doesn't have to be expensive. Drops and Hobbii have 50g skeins of cotton yarn, depending on the weight and whether f.e. Hobbii has sales or not, for as little as 1.50 Euro. I especially love Hobbii's rainbow cotton range + their cotton friends range! :)

If you NEED to be budget-friendly, you can find yarn at some second-hand shops! The only down is it's sometimes knotty, cut in random places, and doesn't have a label. But it's more sustainable and more budget-friendly!

I learned crochet in high school. I am now applying for social security. I have returned to crochet off and on over the years and as far as I remember no one ever explained to me why you needed stitch markers, compression gloves, a tension ring or any of those. Had thought of the gloves because of my arthritis, thought of the ring because I had a stroke and started from scratch as therapy and part of my rehab ( anything involving numbers can be a challenge and my memory is like a sieve!) so crochet is a perfect tool for recovery for me! I ordered the ring just last week and the addition of the non-catchy gloves, the new hooks (with silicone grips) and stitch markers (the number thing) I feel I am now on track! You gave great advice on your video and I am ready to expand my horizons! Now I will be making plushies and fun stuff for grandkids, market bags and purses for friends, and pretty shawls for myself and afghans for babies and everyone to wrap up in during the cooler months! Very good advice today! I wish I could have heard all this 40 years ago! Maybe I did but forgot after the heart surgery and stroke!! You are a personable young lady and I wish you much success!

23:04 I just started crocheting this week and already have broken an acrylic hook (snapped right in half D:) and bent the plastic darning needle I had haha. I was trying so hard not to but they bend so easily with the tension @-@ (I ordered some non-acrylic tools now though so things are looking up, I've been working on a market bag as my first "big" project!) Love your videos!

17:50 Bamboo knitting needles are a must, the crochet hooks with the flat grip is also a must for long projects without cramping! I also have 3 generations of knitters who have also owned shops... so i have worked with the most expensive wool and alpaca yarns. The main thing with yarn is to make sure that whatever you buy is not 100% acrylic, Whether it is cotton or bamboo blend for summer or alpaca or wool blend for winter. The less plastic, the less sweaty, and definitely better to buy in store! Support small yarn businesses! They have a lot of knowledge, teach classes, fix your problems, and will find you the perfect yarn, even if they have to special order a color for you!!!

I am originally from Russian, and there we use completely different system with yarn: usually yarn length per weight matters (like 100g/50m), so i am usually totally lost in pattern, when it uses different scale)

Tension rings didn’t help with my tension, but if I don’t love the feel of a certain yarn the ring helps? I’m weird, but it’s something to consider for people with sensory quirks.

No idea in which parts of the world Sostrenen Grene exists (I'd guess mostly in Europe), but I really like their yarn (which is 100% cotton) and I'd say it's affordable enough. It definitely is great for Switzerland anyway. :)

Animal fibers have to be blocked, they typically have to be hand washed, and they come from animals, unless I can physically visit the farm that the animals were raised on I don't know how these animals were treated or raised. Personally I'm on the fence about animal fibers. Plant fibers are great for summer and they're washable. Acrylic is cheaper and it is washable and great for winter.

I love your videos they are so helpful. Just wanted to mention carbon footprint and all that stuff that makes you feel like a shitty individual was all created to make you feel bad and take blame when it's the big corporations and oil companies who need to feel bad. At an individual level, you can only do so much. Not to say one person can't really mess up the earth but in the idea of buying yarn and feeling bad bc you can't afford cotton, and now you're not sustainable. It's not that serious, you can only do so much.
