I'm sure you've thought of this already, but free to play (f2p) typically suggests that there will be microtransactions. While I don't think that is inherently a bad thing, it does mean you'll probably need more art assets since purchases are usually cosmetic. I don't know what kind of arrangement you have with your artist or if you plan on learning more of that yourself, but it could be a problem. Just my two cents.

Certainly part of the things to consider

Free To Play games can be done in such way that they are not Pay To Win (like many right now on market). I have 2 examples of amazing F2P that are not P2W: Path Of Exile and Warframe. In this games player can give money (and often do) for cosmetic upgrades that don't influence game in any shape or form. This means that those who buy stuff have absolutely no advantage over those who don't. This is very good model if your core game loop is interesting enough to keep player base.

Start with a very small project with well defined rules (In my university classes we'd do stuff like implement Boggle, Tic-Tac-Toe, etc.). Use tutorial online for the code, look up what you don't understand. Don't despair when you have no idea what to do and you feel unmotivated, it's normal, just push through it, try random stuff just to get you going. I would suggest starting with 2D stuff but after you've done a few things you can try playing around with 3D models. Game Dev requires a lot of different roles. Depending on what you like, you can spend time practicing outside of game dev. Try traditional art, modeling, photoshoping, python scripting, analyzing game design, UI & UX, web design, etc. Personally I learn best when I give myself an arbitrary goal and have to figure out how to do it even if in the end I don't exactly get what I wanted. You can see that in some of my videos like the UV mapping (kzbin.info/www/bejne/qKGufGiMetJloc0), the TPS tutos (kzbin.info/aero/PL43PN07AM4J-yYkhURRdYKxYEIiTFkPnU), The little game I made for my kids (kzbin.info/www/bejne/hKrEnamfgcmGfsU), the roguelike tutos (kzbin.info/aero/PL43PN07AM4J9N2eiVn43s9h7uJgbZH9Gp) and so on.

F2P: What I plan with my little hobby project, if it's ever getting done: Potentially go F2P with the base game, then add paid DLC expansions. Not a fan of selling boosts and the like, since I hate having those in my games, too.
