I purchased my first Speedmaster in 2018, but later flipped it to purchase another watch. I realized the error of my ways - and came to the conclusion I needed a Speedmaster in my collection. I just bought the new version (3861) - and couldn’t be more happy with it! Refined and improved, I had no idea of the changes in the movement, the thickness, and the incredible bracelet with micro adjustment. Omega hit a home run with this iconic watch! I absolutely love it.

Great review. I agree with you, the best update to the speedy in many years. I finally pulled the trigger and got it a couple of months ago and I’m over the moon. I opted for the sapphire version after a lot of research into the actual specification from NASA back in the days. They did not have any requirements regarding the crystal and the only reason the approved watch had a hesalite crystal was that it was the Omega go to crystal at the time for this watch. It’s the nicest watch I’ve ever had and I feel so happy every time I look at it.

Some parts of your comment are not accurate. As explained by Watchfinder and quote: "Acrylic, the versatile plastic behind everything from hard contact lenses to paints, offers a considerable benefit over glass when used as a watch crystal: toughness. While not as hard as glass and therefore less scratch resistant, acrylic offers twice the resistance to fracturing-and any light marks can simply be polished out. It's propensity to crack instead of shatter on failure is also beneficial, maintaining its structure and therefore reducing the overall damage to the watch. It's why it's used in submarine windows. Acrylic comes under a multitude of a trademarks, including Plexiglass, Perspex and, of course, Hesalite. This toughness was the motivation behind NASA's decision to retain acrylic for the Speedmaster's crystal when it was selected as the official watch of the Apollo program. Omega did offer to swap the Hesalite out for a newer, harder material-sapphire crystal-however NASA determined that that the failure characteristics of acrylic were favourable to the propensity of sapphire to shatter in the same way as glass. The consequence of a thousand tiny shards of very sharp sapphire floating in zero gravity drove the decision to stick with the tried and tested Hesalite".

@@jorgerobles628 Watchfinder is not NASA. What I’m saying is that I haven’t seen any NASA documents that support the Hesalite argument. Furthermore the cabin was full of other instruments that had glass lenses on them. I’ll be more than happy to revise my opinion when some actual proof is available instead of hearsay and quote from 3rd party sources n

I picked up this same version a week ago today and I couldn't be happier. I previously owned an 1861 and could never bond with it, this one is a totally different story. It checks all the boxes. I was apprehensive about only two micro adjustments but it fits perfectly. I'm a bigger guy (6'2 265) and I was concerned about the 15mm taper on my wrist but it isn't an issue at all. I also own a Planet Ocean 43.5 and wore it today for the first time, went home at lunch and put the Speedmaster back on if that tells you anything.

Thumb up before you even said a word :) I did the same thing, bought it from the AD the moment I tried it on my wrist, despite owning a few Speedies in my collection. The differences are subtle, but surely impactful! On power reserve, many have tested it and I did it too, it's about 65 hours from full to stop, instead of the 50 hours listed in the specs. I think Omega listed it as 50 for the sake of meeting the Metas requirement of accuracy at low power, as I did observe it runs considerably faster at the last 10-15 hours. Feel free to give it a try!
@WatchCrunchOfficial3 жыл бұрын
Wow, very interesting Robin. I would expect it to slow down as it runs low on power
@robinhook373 жыл бұрын
@@WatchCrunchOfficial Yup, I checked on my notes again. Mine is running a bit fast to begin with, especially resting dial up on the table. At full power it is about +3.5s/day. My measurement indicates the first 24 hours at 3.7s/day, the 2nd day was about 6s/day, and from the 50th hour to 65th, it measured 11s/day. Other positions should make it a bit slower. I've seen 2 versions of technical explanation on accuracy and power. One graph from Archer (the respected watchmaker at Omega Forum) indicates most movements slow down as amplitude drops. But I also see others commenting that frequency will increase due to the "pendulum length" shortens as amplitude drops. I'd trust Archer more, but this watch surly demonstrated the other way... so I don't know. :P

I don't know that I would upgrade if I owned the previous generation, but the upgrades do have me even more interested in getting one. I agree with you on the power reserve. 2 more hours isn't much of an increase for such a dramatically upgraded movement. With so much else coming in with 60-70 hours now a days, I think 70 would be great, especially for a hand wound movement. The one bummer about the hesalite version is not being able to see that gorgeous movement. That would likely push me toward the sapphire model. I have a milestone birthday next year, and I am seriously thinking of getting the new Speedy Moon watch, especially since Rolex killed off the 39mm Explorer (36 is too small for my wrist/height).

Long power reserves are just not required for 'normal' people with just one watch. That's just about everybody who buys a watch. Not the weird obsessive collector community. To wind my watch each morning takes precisiely 22 winds. To fully wind it takes 25 and then you reach the stop or tension point. Doing this each morning as I drink my first coffee is what I love about a manual wind piece. The relationship is cultivated and dependent and the relationship is forged. It becomes part of you. If I want a long power reserve I will get a quartz. :)

Great watch, and I love it. Though people should be aware that the 3861 movement has teething problems. The chronograph function on my 4 months old hesalite has started acting up (stops at 58 seconds, which also stops the running second and the watch altogether). Did a bit of research and it's not an uncommon ocurrence for people who use the chrono function frequently. Dropped it yesterday at the Omega shop, who told me I should have it back in a couple of weeks. Fingers crossed that they fix the issue permanently.

@@WatchCrunchOfficial Since you're into Omega Speedmaster's, do take the time to read carefully through this thread: omegaforums.net/threads/3861-movement-broken.120071/ The issue that affects my watch has affected a number of others, and is basically down to a design flaw in the bushing connecting the center wheel to the main plate. They seem to have corrected this as of June 2021 (changed the bushing), but virtually all watches produced before then are susceptible to develop this issue over time. Not to say that they all will, and it depends on the watch usage, as apparently this affects predominantly people who use the chronograph function regularly. But the potential for trouble is there, until the watch is serviced by Omega and this bushing is changed. This means that all of us who have bought the Speedmaster Professional in the first few months after its release in January 2021 (and the ones who have bought the Apollo 11 50th Anniversary or the Moonshine) are beta testers of the new movement. Oh, and Omega has known about the problem since at least September 2020.

Great review, agree that the small changes add up to a very nice rendition. Some other KZbinrs have complained about sharp case edges, does yours seem to have this?

At this time I'm keeping my 1861. The new one trounces the old model in almost every aspect but it doesn't have the resume of decades of space faring history that the 861/1861 has.

The 1861 is a proven movement for sure 👍

Same, such a great movement that I want to see it. Also not going to buy the same watch twice.

Love this watch. I agree with going with the Hesalite crystal; the Sapphire version has AR on both sides which, after time, generates hairline scratches which is really annoying (why not just add AR on the bottom like many other watch makers do?) Thanks for sharing this great historique watch ... hope to get one on my wrist one day 🤞🏼🙂

Ooo that's not a good look for a 10k watch! You won't be disappointed Frank when you finally try one on.
@jpl18613 жыл бұрын
According to technical data, the sapphire version is only inside. The other versions like snoopy are the ones with double sided coating, if I remember it correctly. I definitely looked at the standard sapphire moonwatch and made sure it is only inside because i don't like outside AR coated watches due to that reason you have mentioned.
@antoinetruchot12392 жыл бұрын
I’m new into the moonwatch hype, what is AR ?
@FrankLavoy2 жыл бұрын
@@antoinetruchot1239 - AR is the Anti Reflective coating on the crystal/glass covering the dial. It helps with seeing the dial better when there is a light source reflecting on the dial.

Happy with my 1863 Sapphire Sandwich, not sure if the new improvements is enough of a worthwhile upgrade IMO. Purchased mines for £4,000 and the new version is £6120 for the sapphire and £5370 for the hesalite in the UK.

The sapphire is fucking £7400 now. I wish I bought it last year! Instead I went for a BB58😵

Good review. It’s a winner. I’d still like to get the 1861 in Heselite to go Along side the 3861 Sapphire … that movement is too good to hide !

I wish they would do the display caseback on the hesalite! :)

I purchased the last gen Speedy in October of 2020 and I sold it last month. This new version addresses all of my complaints regarding the bracelet, case back thickness and lackluster timekeeping. Looks like a winner.

I want this watch but the biggest box it does not tick for me is an easy on-the-fly adjustable clasp. I have read some people mod the watch by swapping out the clasp with the chronoscope's clasp, but, I think the adjustable claps should be included on all modern watches. It's 2022, there's no excuse. Won't hold my breath for an update anytime soon though.

@MrBulletpoint3 жыл бұрын
@@atl3630 guess it's down to personal taste / enjoyment. To me the SMP300 especially in that blue dial is gorgeous and looks the part, esp if you're vain and like to impress non watch enthusiasts :-) the speedy is much more understated. I'm getting it next , though :-)
@anthonystevens86833 жыл бұрын
The Speedy was on my radar a while back but I ended up with an SM300M great white but that speedy itch carried on and on. A great classic manual wind watch is certainly worth saving for. Ideally take your time and have both at some point. You can't really compare an SM300 with the Speedy, different watches, totally different movements, different personalities I'm certain my purchase of my SM300 was the right choice with a Speedy in line to follow.

You are a very dangerous man, last time i watched your 38mm co-axial video i bought that watch, now that i've seen this one i bought this too :p Love the videos and can't wait to wear my 3861, i went for the sapphire this time cuz my 1861 was a hesalite

@mikec34543 жыл бұрын
It is a bit surprising that Omega didn’t do that to really bring it over the top. Giving it a 100m WR would have been just as significant as the 3861 movement. If Cartier can update the Santos to 100m without screw down, I have no doubt Omega can do the same. Part of me thinks that if put to the test, the Speedy could very well survive 100m, but I wouldn’t test it with my watch. Upgrade the gaskets already, Omega!
