The Omega Speedmaster Professional Moonwatch is easily the most popular chronograph and probably one of the most iconic timepieces of all time. Few wristwatches have captured the hearts and minds of watch collectors and enthusiasts like the Omega Speedmaster. Today I am exploring the Omega Speedmaster in depth with a long overdue feature length review video.

I have had my Speedmaster since 1970. It was given to me by my brother for my having served in Vietnam and survived. Was there from November 1968 to November 1969. As a geologist I mapped the geology of the II Corps Zone while stationed in NahTrang. I after the three year army service in went back to graduate school as there were few jobs during the recession of 1970. This watch helped my with my research as I had to time my experiments. After finishing my research in Geochemistry I again used the watch to time research in my next job. Then as an environment engineer I had to time the hydrological research relative to water recharge in monitoring wells. I can say that this watch was an extension of my body. It was always with me, day and night. Now 50 years later I have had it cleaned twice and replaced the stainless bracelet once because the expandable bracelet just wore out. I knew this when it fell off while in an airport. The crash to the ground did not damage the watch. On yes I did replace the crystal twice too. Cannot live with out this watch and still use the timer function when cooking of doing other activities. When teaching here inKorea I also used it to time presentations. Great watch. I think if you have one watch for life this is the one to purchase. Great watch and so always dependable as long as you wind it every day!

It cost $345 in 1970, so my brother told me. So the value has increased much. Since mine is similar to those warn on the moon, it’s value is unusually high.

For me this is a forever watch. I have both Speedy Pro and Reduced Auto. I might eventually flip my Reduced but not the Pro. My chronograph is working fine but then again I very seldom use the chrono function. My Speedmaster has cal. 1861 and I love taking few moments in the morning to wind the watch. Yes, I also own a Seamaster Pro and the helium valve is just a gimmick but to me it immediately distinguishes Seamaster from other dive watches. I really enjoy my Omega watches.

Normally I would agree with you that the history of a watch is not important, the Speedy is the one exception. That's because I am an old fart, and one of the formative experiences of my childhood was hanging out with my dad and watching the moon landings on TV, then going outside and looking at the moon in awe. That's why I bought a Speedy. Not for collecting, but as my daily beater, and as a connection to my past.

I have a 2 drawares full of watches boxes and they are helpfull when you are not using the watches. I run my protocol of winding and wearing in the wrist all my automatic watches every morning after I bathe, so the watch boxes have been usefull to keep the watches safe,. My Omega watches boxes take up the most space in my drawers.

For sport watches, hacking does make more scene, more so a chronograph. It's nice to see the chrono sec hand runs in sync with the sub sec hand for precision. Also, lateral clutch has more wear and tear, and, need to mentioned that the chrono function should not run continuously. In price comparison, the seiko 8R48 has a column wheel vertical clutch, and, the unique 3 pointed hammer and heart-shaped cam ensures the perfect synchronization of the hands flyback function at pin-point. My srq031 which cost less than 3k has Zaratsu finishing, and, it's accurate to 3 spd. The 2mm protruding glass, interestingly, makes the watch looks compact (30mm dial). The fine soft cordovan straps wears so comfortable. I like this better than my daytona. Just stunning

The FOIS is a smaller watch but has the exact same lug to lug or 'wing-span'. Subsequently, it wears almost the same as the Professional. As the tachymeter and dial are the same sizes it will also appear to be the same size.

When Omega announced the 321 re-release they said explicitly that it would NOT be in any limited editions commemorating the Moon landing (not in any limited editions at all). Potentially in a numbered version (like the FOIS). Also as they'll be handmade, it's likely the numbers produced will be low and VERY expensive, likely with a precious metal case.

Hi Guy. If you're having problems with the chronograph operating correctly take the watch in. It's normal and I own several Speedys and know others with several as well. Second, the same thing goes for the endlinks. I don't have that issue. And it's not one I remember reading about on the forums or seeing in other video reviews. Something might be wrong. Maybe it has the wrong sized springbars. A chronograoh with a cam is not a higher quality chronograoh per se but rather the cam is more difficult to manufacture and is thus seen as a higher quality part than a lever. But as you noted the actuation is quite crisp on the 1861 which speaks to the quality with which Omega makes this movement. Tim Mosso regularly points this out in his Moonwatch reviews. Finally, there is a ton of content on the forums that the watch will hold up to its stated water resistance. In fact, Omega, tests all its watches to 25% greater than the stated water resistance. A very nice video. I enjoy your content but a 75 minute video is too long. Please try to shorten the content in the future. Thanks!

Now that I have watched part 2: I think that the lack of microadjustment on the default clasp is unacceptable given what the Speedmaster is to Omega and its price point. The limited edition is grotesque. It will forever be the Omega Asstronaut to me. I like the third silver subdial idea you noted, I personally think a moonpocked panda with could have been spectacular. That they ended up with juicy glutes actively cheapens both the Speedmaster and the moonlanding. I can't think of the last time I was this perplexed. I'd give you another thumbs-up if it were possible.

Water resistance has been a big issue in Omegas. I consider this to be the huge difference with Rolex. A reason for Rolex to last longer as a relialable watch.
@danielmewes
@danielmewes 5 жыл бұрын
Issue as in Omega watches not actually meeting the specified water resistance? Or issue as in the specified water resistance is lower? Omega says that their specced water resistance is "real" water resistance. So you can easily take the 50m WR Speedmaster diving. I haven't tried it, but I have little doubt that it would hold up on any regular scuba dive (of course you need to be very careful not to touch the pushers or move the crown, so not an ideal dive watch).
@danielmewes
@danielmewes 5 жыл бұрын
I've been taking my Planet Ocean diving a fair bit. Though a few people have reported water resistance issues with their Planet Ocean *chronographs* on Watchuseek (no such stories for the non-chronograph ones). So some of them do seem to have issues. Not sure if it's any different for Rolex. I bet most people never take their Rolexes (or Omegas fwiw) in the water, so the real-world data basis is fairly small.

BEWARE, OMEGA PRODUCTION ERROR - All Speedmasters with cal.1861 or cal.1863 movement (manual wound) paired with 5th of a second markers on dial (seconds divided into 5 parts) or paired with 4th of a second markers, and all with cal.3220 movement (automatic) paired with 5th-second markers on dial, have INACCURATE READING of the chronograph hand due to NO FIT between dial-markers of fractions-of-a-second and the movement’s beat-frequency per second. Cal.1861/1863 beat at 6 vibrations per second (6VPS) and require a 3rd or 6th of a second per marker between the seconds; the cal.3220 beats at 8 VPS and require a half or a 4th or 8th of a second between the markers. This affects Speedmasters with reference no. 311.10.39.30; 311.33.42.30; 311.30.42.30.01; 3590.50; 3572.50 et cetera (if they have 5th of a second markers paired with a 6 BPS movement - cal.1861 or 1863); 311.30.42.30.03 (a 4th of a second per marker); and it affects Speedmasters with ref. no. 3510.50; 3510.12; 3520.50; 2598.80 etc. (if they have 5th of a second markers, i.e. each second divided into 5 fractions of a second, paired with a 6 beats per second movement - cal.3220 or 1151 etc.). Incidentally, those with ref. no. 311.32.40.30.01.005; 311.30.42.30.01.004; 311.33.40.30.02.001; percent 311.32.42.30.04.003; 522.30.42.30.04.001 (cal.1861); 311.30.42.30.99.002 (cal.1863); 3876.50.31 (cal.1866) that have a 1/3 of a second per marker (each second divided into 3 parts, i.e. 2 sub-markers between each marker of a full second), are correct. Even Tudor had the same production error/design flaw, on all their Valj.-based 28,800 BPH (8 BPS) movement equipped Heritage chronographs, having 4 dividers between each full second marker, making it a 5th of a second per marker, with a CHRONO-hand that jerks forward 6 times per second and always miss the first and the third quarter-second-marker). Only now do we see it corrected. And only now have we recently seen Omega NOT cheating in this regard, more than 50 years after they stopped making their 18,000 BPH (5 BPS) movement, cal.321. They even cheated NASA, in the 1960s, equipping the astronauts with a 6 jerks per second chronograph hand over a dial with only 5 fraction-of-a-second markers. How lame and criminal isn’t that ? Even their so-called 1957 reissue has a 21,600 BPH (6 BPS) movement paired with each second divided into 5 fractions on the dial. Right, a CURRENTLY ONGOING mass sale of factory error/design flaw equipped CRAP, useless for what it is marketed as, a precision instrument for accurate split second timing. Criminal.

Speedmaster over Daytona, for me personally that is, anytime, likely forever. If I had to choose one (mechanical) watch, the Speedmaster is very near the top for me. Unfortunately: no date. Unfortunately, in this stage of my life, that's a dealbreaker. I know, dial balance, blah blah... I NEED A DATE, and I'll eat the imbalance or whatever with pleasure, and a dessert. The watches I have that don't have a date, I tend to ignore after a shockingly short while. Cyclops = instant estheatical disqualifier. But hey, who am I? Saying that automatic watches doesn't work in space, is most likely wrong. At least one space dweller has successfully worn an automatic watch in space. For all the Seiko fanboys out there: www.horologii.com/watch-brands/seiko-watches/pogue-seiko/

Well the watch would work, but would it self wind? I would think gravity is necessary to keep the automatic self winding rotor functioning.
@jhmsmarttv795
@jhmsmarttv795 5 жыл бұрын
@@JustBlueFish According to the read-up I made, an automatic watch isn't that dependent on gravity as you might think. And at least in theory, once the rotor starts turning, it could keep spinning for ever in zero gravity, minus the friction the rotor bearing is causing. In the article I posted, the astronaut successfully wore his automatic Seiko to the space station for several month's. He even addressed the automatic winding working flawlessly in space: Col. Pogue also confirmed that the self-winding mechanism worked fine in zero gravity, saying: “I don’t remember having to use any extra arm motions to back up the self-winding feature.”

Completely 100% disagree with your assessment on the value of this watch. Just because a product is readily available at any time does not make it a bad value. There was a time just a two or three years ago when you could walk into an AD and buy a Submariner all day everyday. That didn't diminish the value of that watch. It's only in the last couple of years that this "shortage" (which is I am convinced is contrived) has occurred.

So here's the question, do you go vintage 70's-90's or modern?

IF CHRONO HAND LANDS A LITTLE TO RIGHT OF 12:00 START AND THEN STOP CHRONO HAND RIGHT AFTER 41SEC . THEN PRESS RESET BUTTON . IT WILL CORRECT IT. THE OPPOSITE IS TRUE IF CHRONO HAND IS A LITTLE TO THE LEFT OF 12:00. STOP CHRONO HAND AT 38 SEC. AND RESET.

Zero G has nothing to do with rotor rotation. It works even in zero g. The thing is that automatic watch is fragile to break a rotor stem when it hits something.

Thanks for the great video! Really good content as always. I had also problems with the chronograph not working properly. My research got me to some post in the german watch forum. There someone said, that the chronograph sometimes doesnt work as it should, when the watch is fully wound. I tested it (maybe one or to times) and I was able to recreate the malfunktion. Since then I just avoided to use the chrono, when I've just fully wound the watch.

I'm alwase being called a sheep because l am such a Rolex Fanboy. In this case again the moniker holds true. I don't just prefer the Daytona, l actually dislike the Omega. In my opinion it is rather bland. To clarify my point l also dislike the Paul Newman version of the Daytona for that same reason. To each their own l guess. Cheers

Thank you for this thorough review covering lots of topics I have never seen adressed in any of the other reviews. One can see the amount of work that went into this video. I'd like to add two remarks: 1. I've owned this moonwatch model too since 2 months, and I have already once experienced the same issue with the cronograph not resetting. I'm actually quite relieved you experienced the same problem, so it seems that's a quite common issue and not a "defect", although I never heard about that issue before. 2. Automatic winding mechanisms actually do work in space. The rotor not (only) moves because of gravitation, but mainly because of inertia, so when the arm is moved in a zero gravity environment, the automatic mechanism still winds the watch.

There are folks out here that luv the box and all the accoutrements very much. To the lay people out there in never never land, if people bitch enough the manufacturers will get you something like WOKE ASS Breitling and give you your $10k watch in a BROWM paper sack. They are never going to give you a discount on the watch, you’re just screwing the ones of us out of the wonderful packaging!!!!

When Rolex UK serviced my GMT-Master II which I have now sold to @watchbox_ch nobody else i.e. cut throat Grey Dealers/ pawn brokers wanted it, even though it was THE top model, it was away for 3 weeks. They should do a full 3-5 year service, where it is dismantled; ultrasonically cleaned and rebuilt and lubricated replacing damaged and worn parts and then regulated to +2/-2 Superlative Chronometer; or give you a replacement watch. Rolex 3-5 year service and general care advice:

I might bring it in if it’s occasionally not resetting properly. My Speedmaster is 40 years old and I’ve never encountered that problem; the chronometer performs perfectly. On a side note, I’ve always found the crown fairly easy to wind, but maybe that’s just me.

I've had my Speedmaster for 23 years now and I love it. It's the best watch in my collection. I've never had it serviced though and my omega retailer keeps telling me that I'm crazy because it will eventually break down. The main reason is the fact that i can't accept the idea of having it disassembled while it works perfectly fine.
