A couple takes a psychedelic trip.
DEBBIE AND DOUG DROP ACID IN THE DESERT is used with permission from Scott Brown. Learn more at tripintolove.com.
Featuring Maria Bamford, Paul Scheer and the distinctive voice of Larry King, this rollicking, warm-hearted comedy short combines a marriage hitting the doldrums with the sucker-punch of vivid psychedelia, weaving both into a surprisingly insightful journey about love, honesty and authenticity.
Debbie and Doug are a married couple on the verge of a major transition. They're trying to conceive a baby (with the help of a very frank app) but realize their problem is deeper: the spark in their marriage has gone out.
Looking to boost the passion in their marriage, they decide to venture into the wild, woolly world of therapeutic psychedelics with the help of a "spiritual crisis center" and an alternative therapist named Ariel, played by Bamford with equal parts "purple aura" and corporate aplomb.
The couple then heads out to the Californian desert to trip their way into improving their connection to one another. But when they drop a dose that is much, much stronger than usual, they're in for a wild ride -- one that takes them to deep places in both their marriage and psyches.
Written and directed by Scott Brown with co-writer Zack Gold, this short is as wild and zany as its title promises, tripping between timeframes, dimensions and visions with a surehanded sense of craft and a deft balance of tone. Visually, it's as exuberant, Californian and colorful as a 60s acid trip, with a polish and sheen that is entirely contemporary, and the first part of the film matches this aesthetic with its pacing and editing, veering from one vision to another to replicate the psychedelic experience.
But underneath the groovy stylings, the writing and storytelling go to genuinely deep and vulnerable places. Of course, there are fantastic one-line zingers and terrific witty banter woven throughout. But the dialogue is anchored to a rich emotional journey, which is slowly but surely woven into the goofiness.
It starts with a hilarious sequence featuring a shining orb of light with the voice of Larry King, who prods the pair to look into their unconfronted fears and anxieties, both with themselves and one another. Soon they're whisked off to another vision and realize that they both even saw the same divorce attorney, played by a slick, gleefully snarky Paul Scheer.
As Debbie and Doug, actors Angela Gulner and Zack Gold go to genuinely emotional and vulnerable places as they confront their fears and worst imaginings and give voice to them to one another. With this authenticity, it's hard as viewers not to root for them and invest in their journeys as characters, even as they hit their darkest points of self-loathing and shame. But they soon learn to confront themselves and find their way back to one another -- also with the help of a little psychedelic assistance and some far-out visions.
DEBBIE AND DOUG DROP ACID IN THE DESERT is unabashedly fun, contemporary and entertaining in its wild dive into the world of micro-dosing, but what makes it rare and unique among comedy shorts is its emotional openness and intelligence. Funny, sincere and empathetic, it offers up with a resonant and universal message of acceptance and loving-kindness, both in self and with one another. The destination is ultimately wisdom and self-love, though some will have a little more help -- and a woozier, crazier journey -- in getting there.

Someone did a very good job at cramming the essence of seeing, accepting and loving your true self in its entirety into a 25 minute short. If you do not accept and love all that is you, fulfillment will elude you. And for those of you saying that some people haven't done good acid or had a proper experience - Everybody's experience is different and should be respected (not that this was real). We do not all use psychedelics just for entertainment purposes. My use and perspective is from a spiritual standpoint.

Is it true that if your brain chemistry is unbalanced (I take antidepressants and bipolar medicine, as well as Xanax because of general/social anxiety) that you will have a bad trip? I’ve done shrooms (great experience every time), Salvia (that’s hit or miss, interesting time nonetheless), DMT (was an incredible experience that increased in what felt like an awakening each time, but I don’t have access to it anymore), and sometimes edibles give me an almost trip effect, which I enjoy. Definitely know that it’s important to be in a good place both physically and mentally, I prefer being in a safe outdoor area or if it has to be inside, a lot of natural light. My mental health right now is mostly me fighting with myself because I know that I can do SO MUCH MORE than I am doing, and I don’t know how to change that part of myself. I’m extremely open minded about trying new things, especially when there are potential life changing qualities involved. I just also know that some people don’t come out of the trips on acid, so that part is holding me back. But I’m not scared of it like I used to be, so that’s a step in the right direction.

This was beautifully done but I want to tell people that no, normally you never hallucinate other beings into existence. That happens on very high doses (they can be quite dangerous for your mental health and leave you traumatized, believe me.) Normally, you see objects swaying, morphing, and breathing. Your body might look really tiny or large. Voices can change their pitch. You could hear low, bass vibrations. Time has the ability to speed up if you get anxiety and go into a thought loop (pure adrenaline/fear.) During the peak of a trip, an entire minute feels like 30 minutes! Your blood pressure/heart rate DO go up. Don’t be scared by that; that in itself can lead to scary trips. Have fun and be safe

Like actual sea waves? Or simply kinda wavy? 'cause that one's normal, you see a whole lot of movement and things looking wavy on acid, especially especially in things that have lots of small details like trees and bushes. also, normal movement tends to have trails, for example, if you move your hand, you'll see a trail going after it, and when this happens the movement can sometimes look jagged as if the frames per second of whatever you're looking at have dropped to 20 FPS.

@@BigDsGaming2022 Yeah, thought so. You need to be really high to see actual full blown hallucinations that don't disappear within seconds. It happened to me only a few times, one of those times was when I did the mistake of taking too many Dimenhydrinate tablets to induce delirium (a state that causes hallucinations but it's not the same as a trip from LSD). it was my worst "trip" (if you could call it that way) ever and the only one when I actually hallucinate real sea waves. I I thought that the floor was a stormy sea and the bed me and my best friend att were sitting on, was in the middle of said sea. I even felt it rocking back and forth, and I clutched it in panic thinking I'm about to be thrown off, my friend who was bigger than me and wasn't so affected by the drug (we took the same dosage, except I was a tiny 17 year old, and she was taller, heavier and had more drug experience than me), got off the bed to show me that everything's fine, and I thought she was walking on water lol. In the end I got up and immediately fell on my ass, the whole way we walked to her place I felt like I was falling into shallow holes, as if the floor was uneven. later I found out that the reason I thought I was at sea was because the drug - when you take too much of it - causes you to experience vertigo and something akin to sickness of disembarkment, and the reason why I felt like I was falling into shallow holes was because it scrambles all of the nerve signals that affect your muscles, so you keep experiencing quick millisecond bouts of muscle weakness. Anyways, good times 10/10 would not try again. never. _ever._ never again.

Pro-tip: If the acid is taking you for a deeper ride than you can handle, have a benzodiazepine (Ativan, Klonopin, Xanax, Valium, etc...) handy to bring you down a few levels. If those aren't available, booze works on the same receptors as benzos and so it also can help bring you back down some as well. Also, acid is nothing like what they portray here with the exception of a few color changes and things moving.

Make that be a lesson to everyone, finding themselves to be with someone for the rest of their lives: It's not only about the physical altercation and physical experience you go through together, it's the mental and spiritual side of things that outweighs the physical, because love is not this ♥️ or 💗, it's 💚, something that you nurture and building upon together, so it's like taking all the Mental/Spiritual and physical/bodily experience, working together in balance with each with more emphasis put on the Mental/Spiritual side on the Relationship and Experience. the only thing this was accurate about is the heightened sense of introspection. every thing else was a bad interpretation of what an acid trip is. You don't magically get transported into a dream world after dream world where your fears and insecurities get projected into. what really happens is, you become hyper aware of reality, the connections between things, and the symbolism of everything.

Hey, this is the director. You're totally right, we took major liberties with the story, and chose artistic representations of the aspects you described. We ultimately had to. You can't really capture the experience on film, so we went for the emotional experience above all.

That might be difficult to achieve, given people react differently to the stuff. As a representation of a trip, it is not bad, and a lot better than so many other attempts. The random, tangential, introspective nature of tripping is well presented.

This was a film representation of the message of an acid trip. It was not supposed to be an accurate representation of the visual aspect of it. Which of that it did a fine job. And it got the message down pretty damn well too. I too wanted to dislike this film and there is room for that but I think it’s beautiful. Accept yourself fully
