The worst thing about the ending is not that the Chloe you spent those days with dies knowing how much you care about her, and accepting her fate in her final moments. The worst part is realizing that that Chloe doesn't exist. She doesn't know how much you care about her. She doesn't have closure on Rachel's death. Her life is a complete mess. And she doesn't die knowing her death is saving others. She dies in a crappy bathroom. Without anyone.

For me, the ending was not to choose from: save one or many, but what does Max care about more (or what do I care about more). The game has established multiverse that coexists parallel to ours so you know that everyone dead here is alive there... And Jef is the bad guy? Well in ep 1 you have his dark photos displayed in front of the school and the game gives you option to blame him ??????? 1+1 = yeaaahhhhh.... talking about spoilers :P

I hated the ending of this game. You pick Chloe and everything is sacrificed, pick the town and nothing you did fucking mattered anyway.

The Sacrifice Chloe Ending leaves you with the fact that you were given one final week to spend with your estranged best friend before she gets shot dead. You get the chance to reconnect with her, and come to the understanding that life is unfair. Life throws curve balls at you that you need to take in stride and move on instead of hoping that you could change it. Ultimately, life is strange. It mattered because Max came out a better person after everything she went through. The Sacrifice Arcadia Bay ending is where I felt the effort wasn't placed since we're supposed to believe Chloe would just let her *mother* of all people die after that speech she gave Max. It would have made more sense to me if Max lied and told Chloe she was going back to fix everything, saved Chloe, then convinced her to leave with her from Arcadia Bay. Arcadia will be desroyed, but Chloe wouldn't know that it was her fault, staying within her character and not turning her into a selfish, unlikable sociopath who lets hundreds die on her behalf.

Except Max got spend one more week with her friend that she wouldn't have. And think about the character growth of Chloe. Going from wanting a bomb to drop on the town to willingly sacrificing herself to save the town. That stuff did matter, all those experiences did matter to Max.

The word friendzone is definitely used to describe situations when someone has been rejected and can't accept that fact. It doesn't really have a clear meaning and should probably not be used. But it's not as simple as you make it out to be. Just this example provides a different case from the two you mentioned. Max never considered Warren would want to be with her. She is oblivious to his feelings towards her. That doesn't have to mean she has no interest in being more than friends. Max just got to know Warren and thinks of him as a friend. But it's not like a relationship can't form from a friendship. Max never rejected Warren until the player chooses not to kiss Warren in the last chapter. Max just turned 18 and she grows a lot during the events of the game. In the beginning, she isn't at the stage where she'd think about a relationship. That's why she doesn't get Warrens signals. He tries to get with Max but she neither rejects, nor accepts. She thinks of him as a friend, not because of him specifically but because she isn't ready for a relationship at that point. She has simply not sorted out her feelings yet. It's only at the very end she is ready to make a decisionand it's up to the player to decide what she ultimately chooses.
