This was Monterey Pop, the first rock festival in history . The crowd was full of hippie kids who had no idea who Otis Redding was. He was the last act late Saturday night. The people were beginning to leave the place until he came out and they heard that glorious voice, they promptly turned around and went back to their seats and Otis proceeded to blow them away.

Love Otis Redding nicknamed the "King of Soul". Sadly he died in 1967 in a plane crash at only the age of 26. But he left us some beautiful music. Some of my favorites are "Try A Little Tenderness", "(Sittin' On) The Dock Of The Bay", "Respect", "These Arms Of Mine" etc.

Otis Redding is the prototype of what soul/R&B music should be! Watching this old clip make me sad to think that later that same year, Dec. 1967, we lost him in a plane crash at the very young age of 26! Just think of all the amazing music he would have made!❤️❤️

Whenever I can't decide what to play, Otis goes on. He has accompanied me through 50 years, since I bought my first secondhand record at 15 ... and he was already gone. Sensational in everything he did and never gets stale. Not many I can say that about. Check out Solmon Burke ... also a fabulous soulman. If this is live at Whiskey Au Go Go, watch the whole thing, it will blow your mind.

A true legend we lost a real one when we lost him and most the members of his band The Bar-Kays in a plane crash. He was only 26 years old and at the height of his fame. He is also the writer and a original singer of Respect that was taken to another level by Aretha Franklin. He had many classic hits and recorded for the most soulful record label Stax Records.

During Otis' life both he and James Brown contested for the title "King Of Soul." IMO this is the best version of this song he ever produced. His performance of "Try A Little Tenderness" at The Monterey Pop Festival is also one of his best. This is the same Monterey Pop Festival that produced Jimi Hendrix's "Wild Thing" and Janis Joplin's "Ball And Chain". You've already reacted to Scott McKenzie's "San Francisco" from this festival.

Now, this is how a REAL musician with natural talent with zero Autotune sounds. Otis was a soulful musical force to be reckoned with. His incredibly self-taught vocal power and clear annunciation of the lyrics made him stand out from the rest. His sound was raspy but smooth all at the same time, and the way he could belt out each note with passion was breathtaking. Whenever he sang, it almost made people feel like their knees could buckle and give out at any minute.
