Hormonal (or sexual) behavior from parrots can be very deceiving! While you might think they're shivering from cold... they're actually shaking/sexually quivering... from... not cold... ;)
There are lots of changes during this season to be aware of, check out www.birdtricks... for more on that topic!
So Morgan had around a week off in a travel carrier with no flighted or real exercise as she had grown accustomed to, she was also being fed more (only the good stuff) so her weight is heavy and she wasn't very responsive for training. Here's how I made THAT situation into a positive! (watch the video!)
In the end, even I was surprised by the outcome... THANK YOU JINXI! I love how interested in LEARNING Morgan is!! What did you think?!
Disclaimer!! Some things were left to unclear I see from the comments I'm getting:
Since Morgan was showing signs of what could be related to a health issue - Patty took her into a warmer climate, isolated the potential for exercise and increased her healthy food intake to intentionally put on weight to be able to correctly monitor Morgan to rule out health concerns. Keep in mind hormonal behavior is different in all parrots and this is Patty's first hormonal season with Morgan to learn what she is and isn't like. This was a good choice for Morgan to rule out any health concerns before continuing on with formal training (otherwise training could exacerbate a health risk)! She was in a massive crate!! It was one of my own... and there's just no just crate that can accommodate their long tails - the curly thing is TEMPORARY, it goes away with a single shower! No biggie. Also her up in weight is temporary too and as she goes back to aviary life indoors, and eating as before, everything will fall back into place easily. So this isn't a huge set back - simply a few day set back. Patty made the correct call on behalf of concern for Morgan so don't hate on her, I just wanted everyone to know why Morgan was unresponsive and flying heavy (when she did fly, ha!)

This is Patty, Morgan's owner. I moved Morgan out of the garage because she had lost 14% of her body weight since we arrived in Idaho. That is an unacceptable weight loss even for a bird in training. Combining that with her very watery droppings, her sneezing and her shivering I moved her into a warmer environment (the garage is currently set at 55 degrees) for monitoring. Any one of those issues on their own would have sent up red flags and been reason to question Morgan's health. This is my first spring season with this bird and I am learning what might be typical for her and I am still watching her closely. Morgan was on the Birdtricks diet the whole time, (which I came up with, by the way) and I added more vegetables to her diet with the INTENTION of putting weight on her. When I brought her back into the garage she weighed in BELOW what Jamie and I had discussed to be her training weight and is not overweight in any way. I do not want her weight to go down lower than 10% at any point. This is why I stopped being part of the youtube training videos. People making judgements on topics they know nothing about.

I am a person who knows nothing on the topic. But after watching many videos can say your a good bird owner. You did what was needed and more. Most bird owners trim their feathers and just cage them . You went out of your way to make morgan a free flight bird. That is true love. I can't believe people are judging you. Most dont even have a bird. And most parrot owners clip their wings and put them in a cage 3 times the size of a medium dog crate, and use them as an ornament, taking them out 5 mins at a time to show company. When their asses should be hooking their bird up with a trainer, that can teach free flight or at the very least teach the bird tricks that owner and bird can interact and add interest to an isolated birds life.

I know a lot of people seem to be giving up on Patty, but I'm not giving up on her. I remember Jamie telling the bad start she had with Morgan with bonding and trust, that's not easy to fix in a human to human relationships, let alone human to bird when the bird only has body language to communicate how they feel. I also remember the beginning of Morgans training when Patty couldn't even be in the same room. Look how far she has come, both Patty & Morgan. With Jamie & Jinx's help I believe Patty & Morgan will do great.

I did something like this myself. I taught a horse to smile on request for carrots, and his pasture mate watched him intently to see what he was doing to earn them. She figured out it had something to do with her lips, but she didn't know exactly what. I gave her carrots too for trying.

Observational learning is definitely powerful! We have three puppies currently, and all of them have learned their tricks from either watching our older dog, or watching each other. Sometime's they'll even correct each other when one of them hasn't gotten it yet! Animals are so intelligent.

It still amazes me the memory birds have. Idk how long ago you trained jinx's nick name command but it's amazing to me that he goes back to it every time you train with him bc he knows well that's going to get me a treat and also... WHAT way to go morgan that was incredible how she just picked up the head shake! i think you mentioned it in the first video that some birds do it bc you blow lightly on their face and some dont so it was pretty cool to see her head shake even though it wasn't commanded to her and you didn't blow on her face! GOSH birds are just SO FREAKING SMART!

I loved that. It's fascinating to see Morgan picking that up for herself. I always love seeing the other birds train as well, and Jinx is just awesome. He's such a beautiful bird (don't get me wrong, all your birds are beautiful), but I have a soft spot in my heart for all the blue macaws. Hearing him say 'Bubba' always make me smile. I love the way you picked up the shine on Jinx's feathers here. I am into the first a few months of having my first rescue (B&G) macaw and your video's are a lifesaver !! (I have had african greys since I was 13- and it really is something completely different) It is so nice to be able to 'compare birds' - since most parots I see are not that well cared for etc. its hard to find healthy rolemodels. My parrots also teach each other a lot!

Yeah. I'm surprised they learn things so fast from humans, what with our bodies and vocals being so different than theirs! It would be like a squid trying to teach us humans something. So it's not surprising that they learn faster from other birds. What should be surprising is that it took science so long to figure that out. haha

I have used clicker training with my horses and dogs. I've observed Observation learning in both also. I have a Jack R. Terrier that I've taught many fun things to.Recently my niece was unable to care for her 8 mo old long haired Chihuahua so ofc we took him. He ( Chance) has learned every single trick that Jingo knows w/o any training and invented many tricks of his own to make us laugh. Animals are far more clever than many ppl give them credit for.I believe training helps their mental health & natural curiosity. I also have a 13 yr old Shitz Zu that couldn't care less about such "foolishness" and yawns any time I ask her to even sit. 😊

Dogs do this as well. I rescued a 2 year old Dobermann who's sister I happened to have. The rescue didn't know how to play with toys, but my girl did. The rescue would watch intently whilst my girl was playing, and she learned to play through her. I've seen baby Jackdaws watch intently while watching adults behaviour, then copy it for themselves; chickens do the same. I suspect it's the very same for other birds & animals too. Never underestimate the power of their own species! And this was lovely to see, ty for sharing 😍

Birds are just like other animals in that they love to have the mental stimulation that comes with learning new things. When they have active days the like of which are shown here, it helps to stop them chewing furniture or doing other destructive things that comes with boredom. They also love to make their humans happy by learning what's being taught...and when you think about it, aren't humans pretty much the same way? How many times have parents had their kids excited by learning a new thing and being eager to show it off? On another topic, this is my first visit to this channel and I was surprised at how many people asked about Morgan's foot, the weight gain, the bent feather, the pet carrier and the training treats. All these questions were answered several times over and it just takes a little scrolling through the video description and a few of the comments and you get the answer. It's no wonder video posters ignore people who ask the same questions over and over again. And finally, to those intellectual giants who want to berate people who are doing such good work with these animals, why not get off your well-worn sofas and put the same effort into animal welfare as these people are doing? It might actually make you feel better about yourselves. Okay, that's my rant over with. I'd better take some of my blood pressure tablets! 😁

This was so fascinating to watch. I had an Eclectus and I had to find a home for him. My parents are in their 80’s and my mom is in bad health. My Mom needed more help than before. So my Evlectus began screaming a lot and plucking. I knew why. He didn’t have my attention and I was sometimes at hospital full days and only came home to sleep. It was so unfair, so I found a rescuer, who then found a good home for him with somebody who waa going to train him to do magic shows. I know he will be happy because he will be challenged. I cried and didn’t want to do it, but I knew I had to for him. So watching you train your parrots 🦜 is so fun to watch and makes me feel good. I’ve always had feathered friends since I was a kid. Perhaps someday I can have another one when things in my life slow down and I have the time. In the meantime I will binge on your videos 😂🤗🤗 YOU ARE AWESOME!! 7:00 100% this is a thing in the ferret world as well. I spent countless time with the clicker and salmon oil as the treat to train my first two ferrets to potty train, roll over, do up-up, spin, and various other things. I got them as adults from a woman on craigslist who was "done with them" so they were not easy to train. Fast forward two years- No more need for clickers or salmon oil- just a hand command and they do whatever they learned in the beginning. I got a "baby" ferret who was neglected.. and brought him home. After his check-up and quarantine- I was having much more difficulty training him with clickers and treats.. he had NO ability to focus.. but the 10-days were up and he got to meet my adults ferrets. He SAW Khal use the potty, and without hesitation- he hopped in the litter pan and pooped. I was astounded at this. I was working with him for 10 days and had to pick him up mid-poop almost every time to get him to use it! And here he watched someone else do it, and boom! I started re-using the clicker and salmon oil for the adults.. and instead of even trying it with the baby, I just let him watch (and WANT) that oil so badly. He learned pretty quickly to earn the oil- he had to imitate whatever they do. His "roll over" ended up being more of a "roll backwards" but it was so darn cute, I never bothered correcting it.. it was purely on him watching and copying. It's amazing how animals learn from each other

That's a great story. How did you dispense the salmon oil? I'm picturing... a syringe? Still seems potentially very messy! Also, how much salmon oil can one ferret safely be fed a day? I've heard this training dynamic called the "model/rival" method: the trained animal performs (aka "models") the desired behavior, where the new animal can watch. And then the experienced animal EARNS A TREAT, ha ha!! The rivalry--aka "Hey I want a treat TOO" type jealousy-- is MAGIC. The new/untrained animal suddenly become Very Motivated. I think the scientist (Pepperberg?) who studied Alex, her African Grey parrot, invented the term. She used a grad student as the model/rival, in order to keep Alex willing to do the many (boring) repetitions required to "prove" Alex's skill/intellegence. There's some good books about Alex! This is why I love getting a young dog before my older dog passes away. The pup learns so fast, mimicking the older dog and striving to also earn praise and treats

@@Liz-ww3cm Yes a little 1ML syringe is best. I don't do more than 3-5 drops per ferret, per day. (Some ferret sites say they can have up to 1/8 teaspoon every other day as a max limit.) Make sure the Salmon Oil doesn't have any additives (like rosemary) The best brand is Grizzly.. and you keep it in the fridge.. it has a little pump on it

My Catalina macaw picked up “come here” from my African Gray in two days of hearing her say it. Now all three of my birds say “come here”

Growing up we've all had our parents point their finger at us to say no, since Jinx is shaking his head like hes saying no, I think it fits. But a thumbs up would be funny.

YES - a "thumbs up" for the cue! I most definitely concur! Jamie, I feel that would be brilliant for Dave's magic acts, too, just to add a little extra humor into the mix if you really wanted. ;)

Thats very cool. I'm getting really good results from my macaws right now. Learning so much from your videos. I will be trying this one. I feel like now my birds have learned to learn, if that makes sense, they pick new tricks up super fast.

I think Morgan did well it wasn't a fail even though it wasn't what you wanted exactly but she's doing great and jinx is a great trainer. Very interesting you are super with these birds nice to see.Don't stop the videos because some people just don't get it. Not everyone will benefit but who cares the ones that do will be all that matters. I know little about birds and you gave me insight from these videos. Thank you. Wish you all the best.

I don't know if you noticed, but at roughly 8:50 Morgan is trying to say bubba, it might be the classical phenomenon of humans trying to vocalize animal sounds.. but to me it really doesn't sound close to bubba, but more like she's trying to say it(It's a bit garbled up.).
@notuern
@notuern 6 жыл бұрын
After watching the entire clip she responds to "bubba" by attempting vocalization several times, even though the timestamp is the only one that sounds like more than one syllable.

@BirdTricks

We do, all our training is universal for all types of parrots. However we don't currently have any small birds - when our budgies died we never got more. The shorter lifespans of the small birds are a bummer for me! But they're amazing.
