I get that that was a mistake but don't forget that the multiple Intifadas were really draining Israel in the 90's and early 2000's. At the time, it seemed a good idea to F off from Gaza in 2005 and figure "not our problem anymore". But really, I don't know why they didn't at the very very least keep an iron fist control of JUST the Philadelphi corridor (only 100meters wide). Perhaps because they maybe needed more settlements along that border as a buffer and Israel promised "all settlements out" as part of the Abrahams Accords.
