I left PDX some years ago after living in the Alphabet District for 10. Yep, loved walking around the neighborhoods on rainy days and cycling in drier conditions. Wetness keeps the craziness down, although the weirdness remains. The hipster invasion was already in full swing when I arrived, and a lot of the early Pearl redevelopment happened during my tenure. So sad to see that the economy is taken over by hipsters selling fancy food, fancy coffee, fashion, and holistic remedies to each other. P-town is a little too woke for me, lately. I'm well left of center, but I'd feel like an alien there, these days. Thanks for the stroll down memory lane, and for showing me that what I loved about the place when I lived there is fading away.

@danieljulian46763 жыл бұрын
@@DeWin157 It doesn't matter where they're from, Dean. You can only construct the value of "Portland native". The common denominator is how much money it takes. Many people can barely afford the rents because housing is not plentiful enough to serve all those who want to live there. Whose responsibility is it when supply does not meet demand? I don't know. To choose one or the other is arbitrary, unless political economy is assumed. The Proud Boys don't march in PDX simply because the hipsters bought up all the expensive real estate. Rightly or wrongly, the hipsters put their stamp on PDX because what they want is a place like the place they want to live. Self-reinforcing, or positive feedback, that's what we call it.
@DeWin1573 жыл бұрын
@@danieljulian4676 As I was saying, there was too much growth too fast over the past roughly 35 years. I have family that are in all areas of the housing construction field, and they have told me that it has been non stop since 1986. My Grandfather built a house in the late 60's in the outskirts between Hillsboro and Aloha, in a very small village called Orenco, the only things that were there at the time was a small park, a golf course, and a fire station, along with maybe a total of 20 houses spread out. Now, Orenco is a bustling HUGE suburb of Hillsboro proper, his street renamed from 231st, off Baseline Road, to Century Road, and around his street Hillsboro's Main Street name was extended to 214th Street, which that street itself was renamed to Cornelius Pass Road. That area has been hugely built up as well, what was once wooded area is now where an Albertson's is the flagship for a bustling strip mall.

And yet - look how beautiful this city is, even at her lowest.
