Why is there so many abandoned mines? Did the company/companies digging there run out of money or did they just stop finding anything worth digging?
@AmazingPennsylvania5 ай бұрын
@MrStrange1984 Once a mine becomes too dangerous to pull out anymore coal without the roof coming down. And yes sometimes bankruptcy happens too
@UncaDave5 ай бұрын
Right for sure! In a more “modern” drift mine with a solid seam of coal, the use a big square of coal like a pillar. It almost looks like a city map with regular blocks. Then when the seam runs out, if the price of coal is still holding, they would begin at the farthest point and begin “robbing” the pillars. Subsequent roof falls followed but not always especially if they supported the roof while working. It’s about the most dangerous occupation you can have. Real men mined these seams and some barely 36-40” high, working on your knees all day. Be careful guys doing this! Great video, scary but great!

At that depth (first room) it has to be hundreds or thousands of tons, a tri axle truck carries 30 tons and it seems like a large volume but it’s just not when you’re talking about seams of rock.
