I just LOVE how surprisingly chill Principal Bump is and was only forced being a stooge to keep funding the school. Also loving how you keep catching the messages of societal conformity which I feel like is so underrated. You tearing up over Eda for not being able to learn what she wanted? Gosh, I love you man. You become one of my favourite people.

I never even realized that Luz was going to school during what would be summer camp haha. Maybe the school year is different than the US school year? Even in the real world, different countries go to school at different times of the year. In Japan for example, the school year ends in March and starts in April. They go to school for most of the summer, only taking a break in August. It's totally possible for the school year to be different in the demon realm as well. Am I over thinking this? Maybe.

14:40 I like to think Illusions affect ALL the senses, including smell, taste, touch/ feel, etc. I always love the idea of making people think they are stronger than they are or are being attacked when actually not like psychic damage. Also, I think materializing something but it be being weaker version of the real deal but still physically reals falls into illusions like doppelgangers or false terrain. DnD logic if you will.

Yeah, it's great how both Amity and Bump are introduced as your typical bad guys in a school setting, but they end up being rather cool.

18:29 the show does such a good job of having characters who surprise Luz (and the audience) by being willing to listen, learn, and compromise. Especially authority figures! Too many times in works of fiction with young protagonists, adults are just there to either help or foil our main character, seemingly because the plot requires it. But here they seem like actual people, who have their own perspectives and values but are also willing to consider those of others.

Late again, and I apologize for that, but I wouldn't feel right leaving this until my day off, so let's get stuck in: - As per usual, the message to start: *A WITCH LOSES A T* - Luz's nerves before her audition felt familiar to me. I know _everyone_ can psyche themselves out with what-ifs, but overthinking to the point of panic is _very_ much an Aspie thing. - "Improvise!" may be the single worst piece of advice _anyone_ could give. (I do wonder what _worse_ auditions Bump has seen, though. I imagine property damage was involved.) - Good catch on the matter of the time limit she's on. That'll come back into play in a couple episodes, don't worry. - As someone who ended up being the Class Freak through community college, I can empathize with Luz's desire to make a good impression, but... honestly, I've found it's healthier to just _own_ it. Let your freak flag fly high and proud! - ...You had a _cat_ on your lap and _didn't_ introduce us? For _shame,_ Omni! - King is like a raccoon in Cubone cosplay sometimes, ain't he? - We don't see the other _schools,_ but we _do_ meet students from both Glandus and St. Epiderm. (You've actually already _met_ a Glandus student who transferred to Hexside -- you remember how Mattholomule said he was new to the school?) We _also_ get to meet the Coven Heads to varying degrees in Season 2's back half. - Principal Bump has a demonstrable soft spot for his students, one that we see more of in Season 2, but he's also bound by the expectations placed on him by the Emperor's Coven -- as the one in charge of the school, he's responsible for implementing the official doctrines laid out by the governing body, including the fundamentals of the Coven System and the state-approved version of history, with the school's official support being used as leverage to ensure his cooperation. As with any system ruled by a dictator, the Boiling Isles are effectively autocratic. - As a quick overview, the nine Covens are: Potions, focused on brewing mystical concoctions using the Isles' natural ingredients; Abomination, summoning constructs to fulfill various tasks; Plant, understanding and controlling the flora of the Isles; Healing, repairing damage to the body and curing magical ailments like curses; Construction, using magic to alter the physical world; Beast Keeping, understanding and controlling the _fauna_ of the Isles; Illusion, conjuring non-physical constructs to fulfill specific tasks (you see the repeated duality?); Oracle, predicting the future using magical scrying methods; and Bard, harnessing the energy of vibrations to amplify magical effects or conjure new effects. - Ironically, Luz isn't the _first_ Potions Track alum you've met. Remember Eda's weekly job brewing and delivering homemade potions? _This_ is where she _learned_ those skills. - Personally, I've always questioned the logic of Detention. Granted, I never got _sent_ there myself, but it seemed to me that if the goal was to _stop_ troublemakers from making trouble, having a specific place where they could all meet up to scheme up _new_ trouble to make would be _counterproductive._ Dana, it seems, may have had the same idea. - King + Leadership = Trouble. ...Hell, King + _Anything_ = Trouble. - *Viney, Jerbo* and *Barkus* are minor supporting characters, but _damn_ did I fall in love with them fast! I have _such_ a soft spot for misfits and screwballs! - ...Yeah, this whole secret hideout in the middle of Hexside has 'Edalyn Clawthorne' written _all_ over it, doesn't it? - The 'inspector' isn't ever explicitly named, but I've been calling her Ivy. Yes, there's a deeper meaning; yes, it's to do with something in Season 2; so no, I won't be elaborating much at this time. - I'm not sure if the mechanics were ever explained, but I've viewed Illusion magic as being kind of like a light-based cousin of Abomination magic -- rather than conjuring shapes from sludge and giving them commands, you're bending light into semi-tangible forms. Gus's illusions _do_ have some degree of physicality to them, even if they're not completely solid and break apart under any level of force. - What's the term? 'Good and necessary trouble'? I feel like that's Luz's MO, and her secret weapon for saving the day -- and hey, there's value in supporting that, as Bump ended up seeing! - In fairness, Bump being the principal is a major factor in _why_ he seemed so imposing early on. When you're in grade school, the faculty are on par with your parents in terms of authority, and the principal is _above_ them -- even the _nice_ ones feel unapproachable, sometimes even decades later. - We haven't seen the last of the Basilisks (yes, _plural_ -- there's more than just Ivy). They're supposed to be _extinct,_ so _someone_ brought them back... and let's face it, it's not a _long_ list of people with the resources to resurrect a group of magic-eating dinosaurs _Jurassic Park_ style. - Keep that speculation about the Glyph magic being fundamentally different from more conventional magic in mind. Yes, there's something _very_ different about a form of magic derived directly from the Boiling Isles themselves, in large part because of what the Isles _are_ -- the nature of that starts coming into play right near the end of Season 1, and gets much more deeply explored in Season 2's back half, before being completely explained in Season 3. Let's see how quickly you can figure it out! - If you think _this_ episode was fantastic... _ohhhh-ho_ buddy, just *_wait_* 'til the two episodes after next! Those two and the two-part season finale will *_floor you!_*

Oh, and Luz's summer camp was meant to be three months. She HAS been able to send some texts to her mom - we see that at the end of the very first episode.

This isn't a spoiler because it's not covered in the show, only in the companion books and radio programmes, but time flows differently in the Demon Realm. For every two years that pass there, only 1 minute passes on Earth. So Luz has been in the Demon Realm for only seconds in Earth time.
