The history of Afghanistan is marked by a series of invasions and occupations, from Alexander the Great and the Mongols to the British Empire and the Soviet Union. In recent history, the country drew the attention of the global community following a US-led military operation aimed at dismantling Al-Qaeda and removing the Taliban from power after the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks.
Economically, Afghanistan remains one of the poorest countries in the world. It currently faces severe challenges. The withdrawal of US and NATO troops in 2021 led to the rapid resurgence of the Taliban, who now control most of the country. This has resulted in a humanitarian crisis, with millions of people displaced and in need of assistance. The political situation remains unstable, and the economy is in a dire state, exacerbated by sanctions and the cessation of international aid.
In this video, we will explore why Afghanistan failed to build a viable state, lost to radical Islamic terrorists from the Taliban who effectively occupied the country, and what lessons Ukraine can draw from this, particularly in the context of post-war recovery, which was botched by Afghan political leadership.
