I never had the privilege of driving to Ottawa. The closest I have been to Ottawa? Pembroke, ON. I had a cousin who married a Canadian girl there.Thank you for the drive through, sir! It looks like a nice city. I would like to visit it someday soon.

Anyone know what those things attached to the light poles in the median are supposed to do? They seem decorative resembling the Canadian Maple Leaf.

If the entirety of 417's predecessor route (ON 17) were to be upgraded to a freeway all the way to the Manitoba border, it alone would be longer than many Interstates. The combined length of 17 and 417 is almost 2000 km!

I think it should be upgraded at least to a 4 lane divided highway the whole way, and the highway number should become 1 to match most of the rest of the TCH.

It's crazy to see that if Ontario were to as a whole be in the States, Toronto would likely be in the midwest region (due to the landscape similarities), while just close by to Kingston/Ottawa areas would fall under the tree-filled Northeast region of the US. Whereas in Canadian geography, the entire belt of this southern Ontario portion falls into one generalized region.

CityNerd actually joked about the midwest thread in one of his videos; he called Toronto "Sideways Chicago" which, yeah, is at least a bit accurate in my experience

Interesting that the exit numbers on 417 decrease as you drive east, which is counter to convention.

This is due to the fact that they don't plan on having at as a full freeway west of Pembroke. They are not even rigging a by-pass around Sault-Ste-Marie even though the eastern approach to the city on the Trans-Canada is four lane expressway.
