Last year, one of our fellow band members commit suicide, and it was pretty sad, it had a very big impact on many of us, we were learning this song when he died, it was freshman year and we were struggling with this song, so we mastered this song for him. My director said 2:57 - 3:20 was where it should represent all the good that the student did( he was a brilliant kid! And it was too bad we losses him, but he is still with us in our hearts.)

Story is. A man had gotten a paid vacation for him and his family but his job didn't allow him to leave the day he wanted to. Him and his family were going on a cruise and when the man found out he couldn't leave with his family, he told them to go on and he'd meet up with them. His son and two daughters were killed on the ship. They drowned and the man didn't know until he arrived on a separate cruise ship. Wen he got to the place where his family had drowned, he saw them and was inspired to write his piece. He thought about commuting suicide but this song helped him pull through it. The part where it speeds up is where he accepts that god has taken his family into his hands. Very emotional...

in my opinion, the only band on youtube that plays the song with the heart and emotion that was intended for this song. an almost flawless performance. Im usually not much of a woodwind fan, but man woodwinds rock this song. The moving clarinet parts are simply gorgeous. and when its backed by low brass, Bass Clarinets and other low reeds. wow....powerful stuff

Our middle school will be playing this as a flute choir when we go to Seattle in November. Our director told us this story as she did through tears. She hasn't had and easy past two years. When composers take a story and make it a piece that's where it's easy to "make MUSIC" not just play it but to make it beautiful with emotion and movement and do our job as musicians.

Truly a beautiful piece of joy, peace, and sadness based on a hymn of the same qualities. We played this in highschool, me on alto sax. One of our teachers passed from cancer and we performed this with a small group at his funeral. The whole place was crying by the end of it.

My band director has a story behind it as well he played it at his moms funeral and if we play it just right, we might just catch him. Yesterday I saw a tear floating down his face :) I would say success :) my favorite piece of music I've ever learned. Even though I play trumpet and we don't have parts much, I like to listen to the beauty

This song is so indescribably beautiful! My high school has a Wind Ensemble that is going to MPA the second week of March and this is the ballad we are taking. It's the first time my high school band program has been for a long time. I play the 2nd trombone part and from 2:36 to 3:20 with the brass, it is so perfect and I love that piece of the music especially.

I'm thinking about suggesting this to my band director for MPA this year. She still hasn't found a ballad and I think this would be perfect. She hasn't chosen the march either yet 😂 but we are doing Prelude , Siciliano and Rondo(grade 5) and I think that and this would be a great selection

We Played this beautiful today in band once our new band director told this. My new director has played this song for 8 out of 10 years of teaching because 1. He likes it 2. Someone in the Band dies 3. Someone in the Band's Family dies 4. His Grandfather died We played it for the third time ever today and it was incredible. The sadness that some of the most amazing music ever crafted is about tragedy. But those are the songs that you feel the most

When I first rehearsed this song, it seemed bittersweet; its relatively short length and undeniable eloquence seemed like an allegory for life. Short, yet beautiful while it lasts. I understood why when I learned that the hymnsong this was based off of was written after a series of tragic events befell Horatio Spafford, particularly the great Chicago fire and the sinking of the SS Ville du Havre.

Sucks that we can't play it as good as this anymore..Because our seniors graduated and we only have me, the alto player, and my cousin for clarinet. All the rest is the new kids which are annoying >.> Music has like..disappeared in our school =[ its really sad, but i really look forward to neo and contests because we go out and when i hear this kind of music..i feel sooo happy =)
