As Russian activity intensifies in Ukraine and eastern Europe, Special Airborne Warning and Control System (Awacs) planes police Nato’s borders from where they can monitor events.
The flights are known as Nato’s ”eyes in the sky” as they scan the surrounding airspace and ground activity.
The BBC has been given rare access to a surveillance flight on the Polish border with Ukraine and Belarus.

@@Bob3D2000 Most likely... I was just going to say to him, "You should have just asked." I was Security Forces in the US Air Force and there were plenty of times I asked a crew chief if I could take a look inside one of their planes. They were normally always happy to accommodate those requests if they weren't busy and there wasn't an issue of classified information or technology being around that they needed to protect. I got to sit at the controls of a B-52, A-10, F-111, F-117, C-5 and several other types of planes just because I asked, and the crews were happy to show off their birds. One of my best friends even got to board Air Force 2 (the Vice President's plane) while it was parked at our base (McClellan AFB) and got a full tour and even some souvenirs (cups with the Vice Presidential Seal) after he started casually talking with one of the Security Forces guys from Andrews that were there guarding the plane until the VP returned to the base. Afghanistan wasn't extremist before the USA were arming and training the extremists there in the 80s against Russia, and then the USA didn't care what the extremists werte doing in Afghanistan until 9/11. Putin is the only leader with the guts to speak against the USA and Britain keep arming extremist groups to overthrow leaders that won't trade oil in US Dollars. While we support and sell arms to Saudi Arabia, where women and other religions don't have full human rights. Syria was one of the few middle east countries with many religions that live together in peace, with ancient Christian communities who still speak Aramaic. Yet we arm extremists in his nation because the USA doesn't like it Assad is a friend of Russia. I think Britain is quite a brainwashed nation. Especially since the 80s, when the government did the opposite of Germany by making millions unemployed and left Britain and economy closely linked with USA banks encouraging everybody live in greed and debt. For the economy to crash every few years when many can't pay back the debts they're encouraged to live on. When British tourists were shot in Tunisia after Gaddafi by extremists from Libya, what media reminded people of how the secret service whistle blower David Shayler told how Thatcher was using British money to go along with the USA funding Al Qaeda in Libya against Gaddafi?

I'm worried what the future will hold from our actions against Russia. Poor British people will probably be paying the price for 50 years. Look at how Afghanistan wasn't extremist before the USA armed and trained the religious extremists there against Russia. Then the USA didn't care what was going on in Afghanistan for years after until 9/11. Such as ancient Buddhist statues being blown up and Afghanistan females made to walk around in tents and banned from education. Then while the old British people who fought in WWII were dying of the cold when Tories stole and sold off public owned energy in the 80s, the secret service whistle blower David Shayler told how Tories were going along with the USA funding Al Qaeda in Libya against Gaddafi. We're still being blown up by extremists who trained in Libya after Gaddafi was killed. Even the Queen was upset at how Britain let the USA use us as an airport to bomb Libya, killing many including children. That was in the cold war when Libya was an ally of Russia, and USA were planning the star wars protective shield for itself but not Britain, while making Britain a target. People whine on about Blair and Iraq, but weirdly forget everything Tories had previously done before, so we didn't have any choice but to be in the 2nd war against Iraq. Which is why more Tory MPs voted yes to the 2nd war against Iraq than MPs from other parties. Although Tories can do what they like anyway, as they know all most people know is the last propaganda they're told to think, blaming others for what they cause, by making us more of a USA lapdog/ slave to the international bankers. keeping us in a permanent state of war. John Major committed to Britain staying as the 2nd largest force in the Gulf region after the 1st war against Iraq, despite the USA bombing a whole tank of British soldiers in the 1st war. I thought it would be Syria than Russia who the USA would go to war against, one of the few middle east nations with many religions that live together in peace, because Assad is friendly with Putin. It won't be long until Russia Today news is banned so people will be even more brainwashed from hearing other opinions. Such as how Britain and the USA sell arms to the backward nation Saudi Arabia, where women and other religions don't have full human rights.

NATO's greatest strength is its unity. That's why Russia is afraid of it. Russia wants to restore the world order where nations are left on their own to get destroyed by larger more powerful imperialist powers. The Russian Empire is dead. If the Invasion of Ukraine is an attempt to restore the Russian Empire, then the world needs to make sure that the Russian Empire remains dead.

I would hope that they are also forwarding some of the intel to Ukraine's armed forces. In principle they can also guide attacks. Because of their huge radar range (from a different documentary I've heard that 3 AWACS can cover the entire European airspace), they can transmit the coordinates of detected enemy aircraft to fighters so that they can fire their missiles, even it their own radar doesn't pick up the aircraft yet.
