A lot of early hovercraft were built by Saunders Roe., including the SRN 4 which used to Cross Channel before the Channel tunnel. I suspect they are expensive to operate compared to Wave Piercing Ferries.

Originally from the Island and used to travel on all versions of the hovercraft going back to the seventies. The only problem now is that there used to be places to park on the Southsea side when I used to go back at weekends and now there isn't. There is no good public transport links on the Southsea side bar a couple of buses whereas there are trains to the seaside and buses to all over the Island on the Ryde side. That's why the Hydrofoil from Portsmouth harbour is a better choice if you're arriving by train. And of course the car ferry to Fishbourne if you are taking a vehicle across. Still it's a unique experience to travel by hovercraft, I used to like it for it's speed even after I got bored with it.

The catamaran goes from Portsmouth Harbour.. There are plenty of parking spaces opposite the Hovercraft terminal at Southsea

ive never been on one. not even sure if we have them here in Australia. ill have to google it. lol. id love to tick it off my bucket list. looking at the sea, the ride looked so smooth (you didnt mention) I just googled it... and we DO have hovercrafts here in Oz... one company has been going for over 30 years. Hope someday i get my wish to go on one

Enjoyable vid (although that screaming kid was annoying) Did you know there’s a community of people who tune in to the Ryde webcam everyday (which features these hovercraft) and talk about the price of a loaf of bread (and various other inconsequential and mundane topics)?
