What happened to Potomac Yard, or rather when was it converted to urban sprawl? I Started on Southern Railway (SR) in the early 70's when Manassas to Alexandria was mostly trees. There seems to still be forests near the tracks. In the late 70's I was measuring clearances on SR when you could get to Slater Lane on SR through the Wilkes St Tunnel in Alexandria. Clearances were also measured along the passenger train route from SR tracks to the engine terminal north of Union Station.

Potomac Yard ceased operations at least 30 years ago if not longer. My Dad was with Southern so rode these rails a lot.

What type of horn does VRE use on their cab cars? I've seen a picture of them, and they don't look familiar, and they sure don't sound like any horn I've ever heard.

TrainTrackTrav The horn that is used is called a C5-A. Not sure what company manufactures them...

Why is there overhead poles at 6:42? There are no electric wires. Did Amtrak want to extend the electrification to crystal city and CSX said no

My guess is it used to be electrified long ago, but for some reason it stopped making financial sense at some point to keep it electrified, so the wires were ripped out but not the poles, while in Virginia they spent the extra money to take down the poles too.

This is the freight main line which crosses the Anacostia River and then goes north to Baltimore. In this way freight traffic bypasses downtown D.C.

one thing I see that's a lttile strang is that CS still lays wood ties but even stranger is Metro is all wood with the exception of the new Silver line build by the air port authority every other transet agerncy has gone to concret
