ON BROADWAY At Kings Dominion 2013

Kings Dominion brings back a Broadway Review type show this year which I was so pleased to see. Many things about the show were so great to see. The singing is 100% live which is something that you do not see at many parks and at Kings Dominion we did not see that at the Mason Dixon Music hall shows even as in that day the solos were live but the chorus was recorded. Kings Dominion now needs to invest in top quality sets to step there show up another level. Over all I am so pleased to see the park bring this type of entertainment back. I so hope what we have seen this year is only the beginning to great things ahead!!

In the "Old Days" with Kings productions, they would spend the equivalent of 3+ million in today's dollars to create a show from scratch. But, they would get a ROI (return on investment), Because every park in the Taft/KECO/Paramount chain all had a major indoor theater with the exact same stage dimensions (H x W x D). So they could rotate the shows among all 5 parks. Most of the old shows were produced for 3-5 years before being retired. They got their monies worth out of them.

Bill, Great video and the sound was excellent! I agree about this cast: over-the-top vocals, excellent choreography and costumes! The sets were basic and I guess that is where they hit the budget wall. I don't blame the entertainment production company or even the park. It's Cedar Fair corporate. I think they don't know what to do with the large theaters in the Taft/KECO/Paramount parks.

(cont). Long term, I would like to see another indoor theater built at Kings Dominion. Maybe 2/3 the size of the KD theater, (seats around 800 folks). the park is big enough to handle another indoor show facility. With the extreme VA summers, it is nice to get out of the heat or a passing storm in the afternoon/evening. Plus, entertainment brings in a broader range of patrons and gives them more reason to stay longer. The new Cedar Fair management is more entertainment oriented. There's hope.

With Cedar Fair, the park chain has such a hodge-podge of show facilities that they can create a show; but, are totally dependent one each park to produce their own version and the shows cannot be moved to other parks because of the differences in the theaters (size, capabilities, etc.). Paramount wiped out 3 show amphitheaters during their ownership of KD and there is so much expense in re-building the facilities. I hope we can get s small 250-300 seat amphitheater in the near future.

(cont from below)I appears to me most of the indoor theaters in most of the Cedar Fair legacy parks are more like caberet style theaters (small ones seat 150-300 folks and the large ones 600-700 people). They took over a park chain that have 1200 seat theaters in each one and I don't think they know how to budget for the larger theater productions. Sets are, I guess, the largest expense and the large theaters need more to frame and give focus to the performers.

I so agree with you. I so hope they start to see the value in producing top quality in every aspect. Maybe if they find people do care they will make changes over time. This is a big step in the right direction but Cedar Fair needs to look at Busch and Dollywood and such and see how they lack in areas that they can fix. There are companies out there that will provide a quality production along with providing sets that look great. They need to up the budget for production.

I have two video mics that were both produced by Rode Microphones. I mix the input from both sets of mics to produce my sound.
