As I did a refit during Covid as my first boat what I would say before changing everything Verify that everything works thruhull electrical in good to great shape you seem to have a great engine verify the sails The equipment that there keep it it opens possibility where to go If that all good sail for a season now you can update what is needed

Yeah man, great boat! Here's what I think you should do: Paint the hull, get it in the water, do some trips, find out what needs fixing, fix the minimum and go live your dream and fix the rest underway.

Don’t paint the hull. Aluminium is best left raw ask Skip Novak or check out his videos. He’s a veteran of high latitude sailing and ocean sailing. He has brand new aluminium yachts that are not painted for good reason.

Congratulations 'you are starting with a excellent vessel and by the looks of it, it doesn't need much to start enjoying the boat life. first do not change anything until you live on her for awhile,it's easy to start making changes to suite you, which is O.K. if your experienced, but you can end up creating a scenario where you don't end up with any improvements, which possibly didn't need to be.She looks like She was set up for high latitudes cruising with all the anchoring systems.this from a 86 year old Shipwright and rigger with 40 years in the trades,so clean Her up and move aboard, then make changes where needed like pumps, ect. Good Luck, Doug.

I bought a boat that was on the hard for 6 years. At first it looked like a lot of work. But as I got into it It started moving along pretty fast. Just remember a lot of people work on the boat forever saying it is not finished. Don’t wait for everything to be completed get out and enjoy it. Don’t worry about small things. Just make it safe.

Keeping your boat sailing by knowing what to do when there is a problem or recognizing a problem is as important as sail trim.

Kudos brother, I myself had the revelation shortly into my mid-40s when I was DX'd with MS. After sitting around the house feeling sorry for myself for a few months my wife pushed me to a sailing course because I had always talked about it. First class, I fell in love and never looked back. The way I see it the only regrets in life you have are for the the things you never did. I went in with my eyes open after, much like you, watching a ton of KZbin videos and understanding it was going to cost a lot of time and money at the start. I bought a beautiful 1993 Dufour 56 about a year ago and after much work and money spent it is ready to go in the water. I might add it is much better to do the work yourself as when you are not in your hailing port you are your mechanic, plumber, electrician, etc..... Keep at it man, you seem to have a nice-looking girl there.

That boat is built for any blue water. Right keel and looks well built. You may not have the catamaran space but you can go in that boat where no catamaran can. Start by locating any possible leaks from rain and fix them first. Put a watermaker, solar-lithium and a small airconditioner. You already have a great heater for any cold sailing. I think you have a much better boat than you realize. Don't cheap out on fixes and gear do the opposite so you can depend on them. do a part of it at a time and focus on that part don't worry about the rest. I subscribed and I am ready. Let's go! I am a 65yr retired old fart in Washington State.

I raced it with a big crew from my boatbuilding comany and it was magic. Met my wife and we continued to dail and race but I had to move into a home because the Spartan interior didnt cut it for my wifes work. Living on my boat while working making superyachts allowed me to save and now as an old seadog enjoy the pleasures that family has bought. You are on a winner!!

What a great project. The previous owner was focused on eliminating issues he found cruising. The hardest part is starting. I changed the shape of a 6m racing yacht I rebuilt decades back. The boat was literally falling apart structurally after the previous owner tried lightening the hull. The hardest part was straddling the upside-down hull and the first plunge cut of the hull either side of the hog, bow to stern, the rest was downhill. I was committed. As a priority, I would dismantle and confirm every fastener on the boat and through hull fitting. Strip the hull externally and have it scanned for thickness and corrosion, same with the mast. The biggest threat to a boat is corrosion. The cosmetics are easy, it's the seaworthiness is the main issue.

It's anchored in a very protected area behind reefs and small keys in La Parguera Puerto Rico. I'm going to retire in 2025 at 63 and possibly move into the sailboat. I'm going to keep watching your channel to see how you do your work as compared to mine. My background is US Army officer, corporate EHS and industrial security and espionage. I did it myself! LOL...several times. Those years turned out to have been the best times in my life and I'm at present trying to do it again. But this time I'm looking for a nice boat to begin with rather than a project and having to spend 6 months to a year in a boatyard. Not that I didn't love it all. It's just that I would rather spend that time doing something else. Actually, I would rather have a nice, go anywhere, liveaboard and a spot by the water to work on smaller boats. Florida is great for that, there are little pockets all over the place, but any waterfront is expensive to rent. But it can be done.

From Wikipedia - Another Goderich 35, Nomad, was built with aluminum construction for Ed Arnold in Washington state. It was shipped by road to the US east coast and he sailed it to Europe. On the return voyage Arnold sailed it around Cape Horn and on to Sitka, Alaska. He later used the boat to do a solo circumnavigation, intended to be non-stop. He completed it between 1 October 2001 and 6 September 2002, including a month for repairs at the Royal Cape Yacht Club in Cape Town after hitting an iceberg and a stop in Adelaide, Australia, to have his radar repaired.[4]

Cool channel and great studio build. Your boat is a good potential blue water boat. 1. I’d remove the Tiller control and put a wheel configuration in the cockpit so hard to do but the aluminum makes it achievable to complete. Wheel control can get you autopilot better. The Tiller Master option lets you get a cup of coffee but not take a nap. 2. Make a W.I.P. Board (work in progress board) to get things accomplished and be rewarded in that process. Cheers JRjr

NOw I have seen almost all of the ship, OMG, you found a real treasure, you may think about going bigger in the distant future but dont rush it 35 is a great size. After looking at the rig my only suggestion would be to install roller furling on the main sail. the system I like the best it main sail rolls around the boom. Its so fast to reef it down. Haven't see the dingy yet but dont'count this one out. The man that owned this shiip knew a few things and I suggest you give it a good look and try it out. Having it on deck is the best in my mind, its very secure there and when your at anchor its off the deck. I like a wheel myself but a tiller is what you got , up to you to use it or change it. It's your life, your journey and ultimately your navigation towards calmer seas for your soul (I'll lay money now there will be hurricanes along the way) and I'm looking forward to how you bring your skills and new skillsets on your passage. Be honest, to the point of bluntness in how you're doing, because if you're battling for better, having folk at your shoulder to shove, cajole and even scream in your ear to push you there is worth more than dollars could ever buy. I'll wish you good winds when the bottom is wet, until then, I'll wish you grit and energy to get this Hull doing what it is designed to do.

I'm happy to subscribe and watch your journey unfold, you've found a great boat and are in a good position to have success given the talent you have and the level of craftsmanship around you to pull from as a knowledgebase, a lot of people will give you advice on what you should do with your boat, my advice would be for you to have a KZbin channel that shows the real life side of boat ownership and sailing as a mode of transportation, all the hard work and hours that go into rebuilding and maintaining a sailboat as well as the nitty-gritty things like washing the deck, getting resupplied and handling garbage and head maintenance, registration, insurance, wiring, as well as trimming the sails and course corrections, plotting your course and taking bearing. Best of luck, stay focused and always keep a mindset to forever learn new things about the things you think you already know as well as new things you know nothing about.

Heck, that's no where near as bad as what you prepared me for. That's pretty nice actually. Sure, a little here, a little there. I would assume the hull is sound, right? Looking forward to the rest of the episodes.

WOW, most interesting! So glad you got a monohull. Should your mechanical side, understanding, application and fitness fair as well as your video professionalism, you will have a great future. Hats off and well done.

I dont have enough trouble in my life. I think I will add a boat to the equation. Not just any boat, but a liveaboard. This is taking self destruction to a new level. Been there, done that.

Please consider adding a smoke and carbon monoxide detector to your boat if you are going to be sleeping on it. If you've got fire extinguishers, check that they are actually good. Looking forward to the series and congratulations on the new home!

I fixed a small sailboat just to get my feet wet and I sail Lake Superior as much as I can on my brothers ketch. But the dream is a live-aboard sailboat. God speed never give up. Ps. Try paragliding. Beach dunes paragliding and sailing go together nicely.

Very sweet homely looking interior. I like your philosophy....am I healing the boat or is the boat healing me? I am in a similar situation with a 46ft Kelly Peterson I bought 3 yrs ago. I bought it with my brain switched off and my over excitement switched on. The reality of the boat was nothing close to what I imagined it was. I currently live aboard her in a boat yard. Having woken up to reality, I see myself in a very valuable place where I am carefully transforming this beautiful sailboat and in return I am learning how to know the best of me and the joy of living alone. All the best with your journey. We may meet on the high sea one day. I am 74 yo and based in New Zealand.

Normally I'd wave off people buying such an old boat but depending upon the price, that boat looks to have serious potential despite being on the hard for 8 years the rigging only being 4 years old and basically brand new engine, the interior looks dated but in good shape. Guess we'll find out how good of a deal it is as time goes but It looks like you did very good. Now you just need to find sponsors or a pile of cash to make it nice and pick a direction. Cheers!
