So true, I had this disheartening experience with the magic mountain, ulysses, the tin drum, The Man Without qualities... whereas madame bovary, the red and the black, and Indiana I was able to finish. I'm going to try your approach, and give these books another shot. They are currently paperweights at the moment. How ironic

Good luck and enjoy!! I just spent I think about 4 months reading The Discovery of Heaven by Harry Mulisch. Long? Yes. Worth it? Every second!

Cool idea for a video. I've read "Mrs Dalloway" and "To the Lighthouse". I didn't have too much trouble with them but generally struggle or lose patience with modernism. I'm a New Zealander so grew up with a lot of Katherine Mansfield. I love some of it and some of it frustrates the hell out of me. The most trouble I've ever had with a book written in English was "The Sound and the Fury" by Faulkner.

Great point about Mansfield! Her short fiction is like a training camp for modernism
