I appreciate your way of promoting the tea way and at the same time the curiosity that helps you reflect on life. However, I have tried several times the great wines that I dreamed of as a boy and they have all disappointed me. The higher the dream, the higher the expectation. It's all in our mind.

But you had a really good time wondering about the taste of the wine, even though the final experience was disappointing, it doesn't erase the pleasure you had along the way.

Thank you for sharing another session at the wok with us. I have been enjoying your videos in this format. As someone who is involved in the yancha world, I can agree with you that puer and yancha are both teas that stand up detailed study and discussion.

Tossing tea in that wok and seeing the constant changes is mesmerizing. I can only imagine the aroma and how that must evolve with each toss. It looks like great fun but I’m sure it’s hot, hard work.

It’s such an important thought, that there’s a hierarchy to everything that has quality concepts. As a Chef I sometimes eat very humble basic food or even poorly prepared food. With tea I from time to time drink a brew from a tea bag. This does two things for me, first I get a cup of tea and second I can maintain thoughts of what quality is for me in regards to tea. Thank you for thinking and sharing your thoughts.

For me the qi is just as important if not more important than the flavor of the tea. I got heavily into tea after trying a truly superior matcha that gave me an almost instant body sensation and my first experience with chazui. After getting into tea heavily I found that different tea styles had different qi and very different effects. Green teas were generally more uplifting, oxidized teas were more relaxing, hei cha was like a warm hug from the inside. When I went down the path of puerh I discovered that not only were there very diverse flavors but that they also gave very diverse qi. Some were uplifting and energetic, some were calming and contemplative. I often choose the puerh I am going to drink not so much by flavor but more by the body sensations I am after at the time. Puerh has become my most drank tea by far for its great diversity and strong qi. I still drink other styles though and my choice is based on mood. Great video, I wish I had a neighbor like you. Someone to enjoy tea with while waxing philosophical. 😆

True. What you call cha-qi i call tea high. It alters state of mind, so it is a drug no matter what people say. A slightly manic altered state of mind. Only puerh and generally the non-bag tea have that. This tea high cures sadness and banishes boredom, and gives energy to do something productive or introspective . Some teas really put you in that "i really want to play a music instrument" mood. If not for tea or yerba mate, i wouldn't even have had a 1/3 of music sessions. The puerh is definitely one of those most intense teas. Yerba mate (different caffeine plant) is it's worthy contendoe. And i buy tea from eBay, so it's probably was not the best or most powerful :)

For me I like green the best so far out of the teas I have tried because it's what I imagine gets me the closest to the "true nature" of the tea and what it would taste like if I could somehow "extract" that flavor at it's freshest, right off the tree. I can understand maybe it's not the most complex, or most varied tea, but that isn't exactly what I am after. I'm just after the experience of consuming something very natural, something very healthy and tasty. Something that is connected to nature. I have no idea if this sentiment is even true or not. I'm a beginner into all this. Just my thoughts so far. After watching your videos I think I will try to get more into puer and see if my opinion stays the same and holds true or not.

Thanks for another great shaqing session. Most days I would prefer to drink raw pu-erh, but some days I want green tea, some days, white, black or oolong, or liu bao. I don’t think of them as better or worse than each other, instead they provide me different experiences to match my mood. My passion, however, is for the post-fermented teas because there is so much diversity and complexity, especially in raw pu-erh, and this makes it, as you suggested, an area ripe for exploration and discovery. That is what I love about tea.

Enjoying your discussion of being a part of the elite and on the subject of snobbery. To be honest the whole idea of being a part of an elitist lifestyle lacks appeal and it seems to me self limiting. The idea that one faux pas can make you a social pariah seems an excercise in futility and a slippery sloap towards self loathing. I sincerely appreciate the fact that you are sharing your skills (an art form really) and conversations on enlightenment. All that said, I am not saying it's bad to be gregarious, or that surrounding one's self with wisdom makes you a snob; my faith leads me to seek wisdom and understanding above all. I believe if we are to succeed in life in all aspects we should aspire to be the constant student and the teacher. I can happily say teach me more😊 because I have never dried my own tea, so this is where that journey begins, I am fully prepared to fail enough times to succeed because I know nothing in life begins with complete understanding. Again, I sincerely appreciate all that you have shared and I look forward to learning more from you! A million times, thank you!

Could not agree more. P.S. The camera is most likely supposed to cut after 29m 59s. If it recorded longer than that in one piece it would in most countries be a camcorder and be taxed more. Ah yes, those lovely taxes again :D

When I was a small boy, my family was very poor and the only tea leaves we could afford daily is shu Puer. They were very good taste and very low cost. So sad that I couldn’t even afford to buy a gram of the same thing nowadays but only drinking cheaply loose leaf tea occasionally. I would like to try your tea and see the difference...

The price of tea might indicate its quality as seen by the tea community as a whole and its rarity, but the quality of your experience is decided by more factors, especially your disposition and mindset. Not being able to afford more expensive tea has its good side, it leaves you wondering what they taste like and how great it would be to drink them, which might even give you more satisfaction than effectivelly having them on your tea table. I like to apply this logic to expensive cars.

I agree with you! There's a latin saying: "Beati monoculi in terra caecorum", that means "Lucky the one-eyed men in the land of blind". People who say "Taste is taste" never even tried to open an eye and so become a puppet. Deepening into a subject, whatever it may be, make you be more aware and can offer you a better understanding of the world and people around you and there's is nothing snob in it. Of course one must pay attention for not falling into superior attidude.

The recent rise of video conferencing has created a demand for a certain service in many parts of the Western world: book shelf management. You tell the service the dimensions of your bookshelf (or the space intended for it) and your field of work and they would build you a library to look like you know what you are doing in your field. It's quite amusing...

Yes, actually the argument that "tea is for everybody" is very destructive in terms of the dilution of quality due to the pressure of making more which consequently causes the loss of the real point of Puerh, which (for me at least) is the main difference between any other tea (maybe except some wuyi) which is natural garden/forest tea. All the other stuff is monocultural plantation tea, because of the overly high demand from people who does not even know in most of the cases what do they want...they just fall into the trend. Gushu is another story, but really its forest tea vs plantation tea - issue for me, when I think about puerh. And....as for me the tea makes this special connection between the person and nature, really, if you look at it like this, only tea from natural environment have any sense. If you go for the taste only, then of course other things can come into play, although, in terms of flavour density, a sheng from a real environment will always be superior.

Thanks for sharing your thoughts. Interesting as always! I am wondering if the way you separate elitism from snobbery always works out. If you belong to an elite when your skill/knowledge/ability exceeds a certain threshold, there must exist different levels of elitism. If I understand it correctly, you say snobs try to belong to an elite, but didn’t quite make it. Doesn’t that make them elite too, at a lower level? You can consider researchers with a PhD elite, but the group of Nobel laureates is much more selective. To me, this means you can be both ‘real’ elite and a snob at the same time. I feel that snobbery has more to do with your intentions to display your knowledge than with your actual level of knowledge. If you share knowledge with the purpose to impress, rather than to help others learn, spread your passion, or to fuel your own enthusiasm, I think that makes you a bit of a snob. We probably all are, at different levels.
@farmerleaf61
@farmerleaf61 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks for bringing more clarity to the topic discussed. I agree, snobbery is an intention, while belonging to an elite is more of a status. I guess you could be both elitist and snob. An efficient snob would not even try to belong to tge elite but simply acquire sufficient knowledge and skill to make it appear so to the general public. One aspect i didn't discuss is snobbery needs a receiver. An ego has to be hurt in order to declare a snobbery act. Seeing other people as snobs says as much about your perception as it does on the snob's behavior. If tea is a way and that there is therefore a hierarchy in the tea awakeness, then it is fair to say there will be several levels of mastery, similar to belt colors in martial arts. As far as i know, elite is supposed to be the highest group of tge population. When talking about the financial elite, we usually refer to the top 1% of the income and capital. How would we define the tea elite though? It seems impossible to quantify your mastery of tea by a number or a diploma.
@ThijsVogels
@ThijsVogels 3 жыл бұрын
@@farmerleaf61 ah yes, very interesting note about the receiver. Will think a bit about that. I agree that defining this tea elite is tough. Any threshold would be arbitrary, but moreover, you cannot even define an objective ordering of people. Some people might understand the chemistry of yan cha, while others have years of experience aging bai mu dan. There is no objective truth about which skill is more valuable. Maybe the perceived value of skills/knowledge is determined implicitly by the community, and you could define an ordering based on mutual respect? Like ELO in games like chess, or reputation in web page ranking? If you are highly ranked yourself, and you endorse someone else, they inherit some if your ranking? Just random thoughts ...

Hard to assess objectively because there is no competition. In chess and page ranking you have numerous games with a clear outcome. There are tea competitions but their result is very contestable and not really relevant to what we'd call the understanding of tea.

We all have a slight sense of what the elite enjoy from movies and such, and we can sense that a slurpee enjoyer is not very likely to enjoy tea time by making simple observations of them in public. People tend to fit society's stereotypes pretty well, but there are always surprises when generalizing. I think the best dichotomy for pu'erh consumers would be tea drinkers and non-tea drinkers :P
