metalhead360 Frances (who I've seen perform on B'day) is truly the very best. Great voice, but more than that, are the emotions with which she sings. And she created the role at it's very first conception (except French version). SIMPLY, THE BEST!

metalhead360 Really meant to say that when Frances sings, passion oozes out of her tiny frame & throat. No faking the high notes either.

I absolutely adore Frances' version. It'll always be my personal On My Own. I don't really care as much about the technical singing talents here (though I do love brilliant singers!) because to me that's not as much what this is about. This is about the pure, unadulterated emotion, the absolutely incomparable agony of unrequited love, something I have faced in full-blown, excruciating misery. The way Frances does it brings me to tears. I feel her pain. I know that pain. And she knows it perfectly. She FEELS it. This song makes me feel, brings me an emotional connection to her. And that's why I love this.

Album: Les Miserables: Original Broadway Cast Recording And now I'm all alone again Nowhere to go, no one to turn to Did not want your money sir I came out here cos' I was told to And now the night is near I can make believe he's here Sometimes I walk alone at night When everybody else is sleeping I think of him and then I'm happy With the company I'm keeping The city goes to bed And I can live inside my head On my own Pretending he's beside me All alone I walk with him till morning Without him I feel his arms around me And when I lose my way I close my eyes And he has found me In the rain the pavement shines like silver All the lights are misty in the river In the darkness, the trees are full of starlight And all I see is him and me forever and forever And I know it's only in my mind That I'm talking to myself and not to him And although I know that he is blind Still I say, there's a way for us I love him But when the night is over He is gone The river's just a river Without him The world around me changes The trees are bare and everywhere The streets are full of strangers I love him But every day I'm learning All my life I've only been pretending Without me His world would go on turning A world that's full of happiness That I have never known I love him I love him I love him But only on my own.

I've always thought 3:16 - 3:21 on this particular recording was THE best portion of this song ever sung. I love Frances' vibrato on those hard "e" sounds. Some will say it is too nasal, but I think it absolutely makes the song - the haunting "ring" in the nasal voice and vibrato there is so powerful to me. It makes you believe she's in agony. No other singer I've heard has been able to do that, probably because it's really hard to do vocally and probably not "technically correct.

I saw Les Mis for the first (and only) time the year before I went to high school, and the school was putting it on. I basically begged my mom to let us go and then after about the first 5 minutes, she loved it. This song is one of our favorites from the show, and I got this album pretty much the next day. About a year later, when I went to that high school, mom thanked the girl who played Eponine (sorry if that's wrong spelling) for singing such a beautiful song.

this is hands down my favorite performance. I prefer it even to Lea Salonga, Samantha Barks. While those women’s performances are more technically “correct” and pristine, I think Frances Ruffle’s “imperfect” take conveys much more of the vulnerability, youth and tragedy, which Eponine is supposed to embody

I see a bit of conversation over whose interpretation of Epiphone is best, Frances, or Lea Salonga. I have heard Lea sing this with a great deal of feeling and intensity, so I know she does incorporate the sadness, the deep hope, the broken deam, the heart ache, the longing. Nevertheless, I enjoy having both to listen to, the original London Epiphone - Frances, and the extremely gifted Lea Salonga and her wonderful voice and expressiveness.

Jeez, why is everyone arguing about who is better? That's what's so awesome about music. There's many ways a song can be interpreted. I love Lea's anger and passion as much as I love Frances' longing and weariness of life in this cover.

THIS is my favorite version of the lyrics, and one of my favorite recordings. I have another recording that I love too, with the lady who played Belle from "The Muppet Christmas Carol" singing it. She has that fragile, yet strong vocal as well. Both she and this singer really interpret the agony and longing that ought to be present when performing this song. Anyway, does anyone kow why the opening lyrics are different now? I googled it to no avail. Thanks in advance.
