I actually knew at 11 and was very open about it until some point after I got to high school. I wasn't bullied for not masking, but my dad commented how I didn't think like normal people and it was that sort of attitude that made me want to keep it to myself. I feel lucky people often seem to know I'm listening, even if I'm looking at something else. As long as I don't get distracted by whatever I'm looking at and forget to listen, it actually helps me to look away, so I can focus on listening. Otherwise, might be looking at the person, but have no idea what they said.

Thank you for talking about this! I was raised female (I'm trans) and I started suspecting I was autistic a few years ago and only got diagnosed last month - finally understanding what made me different and recognizing the impact that being undiagnosed for so long has had on my mental health has made a world of difference. Late diagnosis is so hard and I don't think it gets talked about nearly enough.

Hello! My partner and our child are both autistic and quite a few of my friends and exes are too, yet it still came as a surprise when they pretty much 'interventioned' me and suggested that I also belonged. Thinking about it can be such a strange mix of feelings and it's actually surprisingly comforting to hear someone else articulating their own experience of this. I've only been following you for a little while now, but you've already introduced me to so many books I've gone on to thoroughly enjoy. Just wanted to let you know you reached us and that you made life a little brighter and to say thank you for that.

I am on the spectrum too, I only got diagnosed last year (when I was 23, now I'm 24). I have Asperger's and it always made sense ever since I learned what autism was but my parents insisted I didn't have it so I didn't get diagnosed earlier. I had a psychologist when I was 16 who thought I was autistic but she only gave my parents a questionnaire that my parents lied on. I completely focused on learning social skills like a madman for many years, I studied people's behaviour but I was always thinking "I don't think other people have to work this hard to do _normal_ things". I have masked so much that I don't really know who I am anymore. I started watching your videos today and I recognised myself a little bit in you and now that makes sense.

Very late commenting on this video (I only stumbled upon your channel a few weeks ago), but it doesn't surprise me that you may be on the spectrum because I love your thoughtfulness, logical explanations and how you review books differently from other people. I don't have ASD (that I know of), but many of my friends do, and I think I have so many friends with ASD because they often naturally work outside of the boxes that other people slip into, valuing difference more than others, and seem to carry a level of authentically which doesn't come easily to many people. You're awesome, keep on keeping on!

Thank you for being so open. I'm autistic as well, and it always means so much to me when I hear others openly talk about it. Makes it feel less taboo and more of something to accept. I only learned that I'm autistic last year, so there's still some internal processing and accepting going on. But it's also such a relief because it explains basically everything (and I don't feel like there's something wrong with me anymore).

Seeing you in your videos, getting to know you a bit and then finding out you are on the autistic spectrum turns a medical term into a part of a person I already know (in the confines that a vlogs allows for, but nevertheless). It doesn't change the all the things I like about you and your videos. It also confirms, again, what a fantastic thing social media can be! Keep up the good work! (Belatedly) hope you're doing well. This video caught my eye, because my best friend from college texted me the other day and asked if I'd ever considered that I might be on the spectrum. My first thought was "s*t, what social situation did I just screw up?"...but, no, she was asking because someone had asked HER that, and I've mentioned to her a lot that dealing with social situations takes deliberate work for me. Wasn't insulted by the way she brought it up, because honestly I wouldn't be surprised in either case, even though we are opposites in a lot of ways. I'm a classic introvert, and definitely had to learn how small-talk works as if I were an anthropologist studying some foreign ritual, but I'm good with words and never had that much problem with subtext and whatnot (thanks to lots and lots of books, probably). She is more extroverted and is good at understanding and dealing with people's emotions once she gets what's going on, but she struggles with language and some stuff goes right over her head. Like, there are several of us in the college friend group who aren't straight and I think all of us had to tell her twice before she understood - she thought the first one was talking about an uncle dying in a shipping accident, for some reason - but then she was super supportive. But both of us see characters like Entrapta from the new She-Ra (who is written to be on the spectrum) or watch Hannah Gadsby's comedy and are like..."Girl. I feel you." Anyway, I think "neurodiversity" is a good word, because while some mental differences can be psychologically painful or incapacitating, a lot of others just add interesting variety to life and help people bring different skills and perspectives to the table (or would, if accommodated correctly). My friend may or may not be on the autism spectrum, but she does have ADHD, and one of the effects of that is that she sort of thinks in curves - she's bad at step-by-step linear thinking, but if you give her a scenario she can often "see" the solution before anyone else has had time to process it. That's pretty cool! And it's possible that one reason I'm kind of obsessed with character writing in books - and have been told I'm pretty decent at it myself - is that I want people to make sense, and am constantly trying to put into words the answer to "why does person A do thing X, but person B does thing Y?"

I’m way late to comment here (new subscriber, yay!) but I wanted to say how much I enjoyed this video. I’m a mum to two children with autism...my son we knew early on but my daughter was only diagnosed this past year - she’s 17yo. Autism is such a wide spectrum, and even more so in girls as it presents so differently so they are under-diagnosed and often misdiagnosed (as my daughter was during a severe mental health crisis). Anyway, all this to say - thank you for talking about it and raising awareness...it’s so important. 💕. I think you’re absolutely lovely and I’m inspired by your bookish passion to read even more widely and deeply.

I am so happy that KZbin decided to showcase this as a video I would like. I am also autistic and I think that is one of the reasons I gravitated to your videos. Being new I am not good at BookTube yet but looking at the different types of channels I think the content I want to learn how to create and use most often would be quality review videos, which yours are excellent. I hope that you do not see your autism as sad. It is all just tradeoffs and sure the downsides can be painful. Being autistic as a child is particularly rough but hopefully as an adult you are able to find and create the social dynamics that work best for how you operate and can minimize the contexts that are painful to deal with. Thank you also for coming out about this on BookTube. I'm really looking forward to connecting with other autistic people here. Are there any others that come to mind for you?

Love your channel, neurology is nothing to be ashamed of. I know I'm a random on the internet, but if you are in a position to it might be worth seeing a psychologist for a formal diagnosis. The term autistic is quite broad and it can be helpful to get a proper diagnosis and know what traits you have. To you or anyone reading this getting a diagnosis shouldn't be seen as meaning you are flawed simply different to the norm. There have been many great people who have changed the world who were neurologically abnormal. But sometimes knowing your strengths and weaknesses can help a lot especially to your mental health. That's my experience anyway. I really like this channel no matter what.

Not surprised at all (I say this in a good way!) I'm also 99% sure I'm autistic, but getting a diagnosis is not easy (and expensive). It's so much harder for females, and even more so for non-white females (from what I read). But there's lots of great books out now for females on the spectrum at least. Thanks for this video!

Taking Tea With Catherine I have read the same. I researched autism years ago in relation to a family member...and recognized myself, especially w/regard to how autism presents in girls&women, in a lot of the literature. And yes, it can be expensive to get a formal diagnosis.

You are so brave. I’m glad the diagnosis has helped you come to terms with everything you’ve experienced. I’d be super interested in reading Camouflage in the future 💚

I am glad you feel you can share this with your viewers. Thank you for sharing. Masking is exhausting in the moment and over a lifetime. It is a gift to have the language to express how/why you (any neuro-divergent person) interact with the world. You are brave!! I look forward to continuing to ‘stan’ your videos!!!

Seji, you are awesome! I love your sense of humor, the way you talk about the storylines, the way you dress and style your hair... your creativity shows in so many different ways in your videos! That's why I keep coming back. I hear you when you address the hard parts of being on the spectrum, seems really demanding... but please don't forget: you rock! & no one is ever quite normal. Love from Brazil ❤

Hey, you are you, you’ve always been you❤️ and you’ll remain being you 😁 we all live alongside our illnesses or limitation. Thank you for explaining I see you not different than how I did before. A well spoken pleasant human being

I relate to some of the things you've said here and have been questioning if i am on a spectrum myself. I really remember consciously masking some things and just thought i was weird. I really need to read that book and learn more
