I think most all striker fired handguns, and most hammer fired, if used correctly, it's almost impossible to discharge a round even by dropping them with one in the chamber. There are multiple failsafe on the Glock pistols. If you're carrying a firearm through the wilderness, or for personal protection, always carry one in the chamber ready to roll.

I am a Christian with combat experience. This is not the hand of God. One can drill and practice endlessly but not know whether he has “it” until the balloon goes up. Garrett had “it”. It’s not macho or badass. It’s the ability to breathe and stay calm, then do what you have trained to do. Dad was also right to tell him to keep shooting. Beyond all that, damn, that place is beautiful!

Terribly life threatening that pistols are totally illegal in Canada,so the odds of any success in a similar situation nearly nil, unless a shotgun or rifle were present&ready. Seriously Canada cares more for an apex predator than human life!

And yet....study after study...in Alaska, Montana and elsewhere, has proven that you are less likely to be injured or killed if you use bear spray. With the speed and force that spray comes out of the can, if used properly, you need an extremely strong wind to disrupt it.

Good, Thx. Some years ago I worked on a ranch in Wyoming and we hosted many hunting trips through the seasons in the Wind River and Gros Ventre Wilderness areas. Grizzlies were around and we always took precautions but the fact remains that since they are protected, (for good reason) the grizzly bears have less than ordinary level of fear of humans (as well as our stock animals and in the mountains, our pack animals), Unless and until we start doing limited hunts on them there are certainly going to be more incidents between grizzlies and humans.

Bears hit with bear spray learn to fear humans (sows will teach their cubs to avoid humans). Bears that are killed are just dead. They learn nothing.

@@alansach8437 Then why can't we just walk up on elk & deer? Or polar bears or tigers? So your argument is sound, but ignores the obvious. When grizzlies don't see man as a predator any longer (most do), then they loose their fear of man. They see themselves as the APEX. That's why they are deadly. For bear spray to work on an angry grizz, you need to put it on their snout, even then it may or may not work until the attack is over but you don't want to be "that" guy. I don't disagree with the argument that bear spray works most of the time, but I do remember how sketchy it was to return to an elk kill site with the horses to pack out the rest of the meat after a few hours or an evening had passed since the harvest. If you knew a grizz got on it, then you could back off and let them have the harvest, but you wouldn't probably know until it was too late. If you a hiker and get close to a grizz accidentally, experience or spray may help, but it's pretty much up to your luck that day! As for close encounters, we can't teach angry bears to live in harmony. There might be better answers or ways, IDK

So I actually know that the day before up in the same area, a hunter shot an elk and a grizzly came out and charged two hunters, taking 2 45. Then a friend had his horse spooked off (10/2/2024). In the following days, a spooked mule and saddle horse were discovered. Few days later my friends horse was found. They all went over the Ridgeline. If you want to do a full story, as these could be related, contact me

I think Garrett had a premonition or at least wanted to be ready in case of the worst. With all the recent bear/human encounters in the area, I dont blame him. I have a revolver myself, so it's always ready to go. Thankfully we don't have grizzlies here just black bears but they can be a threat too. If there were bear signs or activity in the immediate area I also have something with more firepower that carries more freedom seeds. 30 at a time. I hope I never have to use it but I know how to if I do. It's sad when a bear just being a bear loses it's life, but I do think they need to allow a certain number of tags in the Wyoming, Montana, Idaho area because these encounters just keep happening and I suspect they will continue. Allowing a controlled number to be taken will reinforce their fear of us and hopefully reduce these encounters some. Doing nothing means that this will only continue and probably get worse as their numbers grow. There has to be a better way to manage and coexist. I don't blame bears and I don't blame humans, we all have the right to enjoy wild spaces and humans have always hunted, always will. Great story, it's wild how many shots a grizzly can take and keep moving. Bear spray wouldn't have done a thing except maybe blind the men when they most needed to see.

I have my CCW but never carry 1 in the chamber, the police have done a good job around here keeping crime under control ----- but I'd never go in the wilderness/woods without 1 in the chamber. Most modern pistols are "drop safe" and 1 in the chamber is (fairly to very) safe as long as there is a cover over the trigger.

There's a few accounts of people that got killed because they didn't have a round chambered when they were attacked at close range, a matter of split second delay and perhaps poor motor skills in the adrenaline rush.

Obviously, shooting bear spray INTO the wind is NOT something you'd wanna do. You'd wind up spraying yourself. And, HELL YEAH Garret was right to chamber a round. When a bear is charging you, 2 seconds can literally be the difference between life and death. Also, in a tense situation like this, you are in such a desperate state that you may not pull the slide back far enough and in doing so, you fail to chamber a round. Then when you pull the trigger, nothing happens. Now, you're dumbfounded as to why the weapon didn't fire. But, its too late to drag the slide back again because the bear is on top of you.

At only a few yards range, it's frightening to take a chance - but perhaps the bear wouldn't decide Garrett was prey ("it had broken from cover", not "it charged Garrett from cover"). Vince's reaction wasn't to immediately shoot his more lethal rifle - indicating he was considering whether this was an 'immediate threat'. Also, Vince was 'surprised' by his son immediately firing the pistol. When canoeing/kayaking, I've had a grizzly sow with 2 cubs (probably 3 yr. olds, as these cubs were big!) stand up behind alders, just a few yards away, and not charge me. The cubs were in the river, between me and the sow. She just stared as I paddled away, crossing the 10 yd. wide shallow river. Further downstream, 2 other (separate) grizzlies stared at me as I paddled past. These bears were intent on catching salmon - so the circumstances differed from the hunters. Their bear was upwind from the hunters (i.e. no scent conveyed), so she could not have identified them, until she emerged from cover and saw them. Maybe she wouldn't have attacked the 2 men - but if your mindset is to shoot immediately - then your dealing with a wounded grizzly.

This episode was another very well explained story of another encounter between Bear's and Man. The quick action's of Vince & especially his Son's. We're absolutely correct under the given circumstances, that as a Hunter in that situation. You must react quickly shoot accurately & be intending too Kill the attacking Bear 🐻🐻, or whatever is coming. They had No other choice, or it would have been their asses on the line. From the given evidence 🧾🧾 that bear 🐻 was definitely in the hunt for meat 🍖🥓 and would have most likely mauled them both. Since she was said too be approaching from upwind, & knowing that they or something was coming towards her. The men's immediate & quick response was just simply their only choice. Apparently the Wyoming Game & Fish Officers made them aware of those fact's. Now my only real criticism of this explanation is that your channel? Once it introduced the Stories very specific location. They then showed multiple views of the Jackson Hole Valley, the Teton Mtns. & the Snake river. But they sure didn't show any of the Greybull River Valley. Other than on the Map 🗺️🗺️. This gross miss use of data is really frustrating & pisses Me off. The area where this incident happened is only Seventy too eighty Miles due West of where I live. Your false detail's of info is a blatant twisting of information which benefits the people of other Areas in our State. Rather than the one's that should have received the credit, & it's prestige of admittance. IN the future please 🥺🥺 thoroughly check ✅✅ all the Stories detail's of fact's out? Then be sure it is correctly reported. Even by the AI operated systems or what ever you use. Thank you again for Sharing. Wyo. Robert, 🤠🤠🤔🤔🇺🇲🇺🇲🇺🇲🇺🇲🇺🇲🇺🇲🇺🇲🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🐻🐻👍👍❤️

That would be fine if they left us alone too, but we all have a right to enjoy wild spaces and those who do, know the risks. Humans have always hunted and likely always will, especially with the high prices of food. I figure bears and humans have the right to defend themselves, sometimes humans win and sometimes bears do. This is an age old struggle, and as long as we both share the planet it always will be. There's no shortage of bears, especially in that area.
