I've been setting up my Ibby 7's for years, but this video opened my eyes. I've heard about lubing the knife edges but never the claw screw shafts. That makes perfect sense seeing how that area is under high tension and movement. I'm actually embarrassed I never thought of it before or that I haven't read about it before. Thanks for the tip! Also the springs contact points make sense too, but they have ground contact. I doubt it makes a difference but perhaps there is a conductive lube out there for that which would work.
@GranvilleGuitars4 жыл бұрын
John Jackson - thank you for the kind remarks. A conductive lubricant is not necessary. The amount of tension at that point is too high for it to make a difference.
@jackkramer15534 жыл бұрын
@@GranvilleGuitars Makes sense, I have "nut lube" and "silicone lube." The silicon is thin and pretty Incredible, the nut lube is pasty... I might try the silicon. BTW I saw Morbid about 18 years ago in NYC at BB King's before I knew who they were, but was very familiar with the Ibanez 7 string line. At that show I believe they played RG7620's and I watched those guys shred solos on those guitars, it blew me away that they could play better on those than local bands with Universes. It was the first time I learned the skill vs gear lesson, they are unbeleivable!!

Great video! Any tips for setting pickup height?
@GranvilleGuitars5 жыл бұрын
Owen Dowling - Well, the short answer is wherever they sound good. Really there is no wrong pick up height setting. It's simply a matter of what's working best for you as a player. With a single coil pick up as in the middle position on this guitar you don't want to set it too close to the strings because it will cause what we call a wolf tone. That is an out of tune sound when only playing one note. Because humbucking pick ups are indirectly magnetized and have a softer magnetic field overall they can be placed closer to the strings without fear of out of tune notes. You can't hurt a pick up by messing around with its height adjustment. Grab a screwdriver and play around with it. The best tone will reveal itself to you.

@@GranvilleGuitars thanks. loved the video also, this is exactly how I setup my Universes as I have quite a few. I think anyone could take tips from this setting up a lo pro edge or floyd rose. I see so many that are improperly setup in regards to the knife edges, or they don't take time to properly lube, or tighten down everything before attempting to throw new strings on. You hit the nail on the head when you mentioned needing "patience" to set these things up. I'd love to see you do a video even further and what happens when they don't return to pitch and are setup. I think this happens a lot with older Ibanez where the posts either get worn, or they are the older posts which had a more narrow cavity, or the knife edges become dull and need sharpening, and or springs are worn out. A good video on correcting issues is well needed. Thanks!

@GranvilleGuitars5 жыл бұрын
1985alexe - Yes it does.
@hchoe7414 жыл бұрын
Actually, no. Unlike the original edge and lo pro edge, the edge pro bridge was designed to be set flat parallel to the body. Just look at the side of the bridge you'll see the knife edge and it is parallel to the bridge, not at an angle like on the original edge and lo pro edge.

Do Ibanez specify that the Edge trems be set at the angle you said? Every Ibanez I've seen, including my own, has had the bridge plate flush with the body.
@GranvilleGuitars4 жыл бұрын
John Desmond - Yes they do. My experience is the opposite. Most of the Edge bridges I see are set correctly.
@someoneelse101 Жыл бұрын
@@GranvilleGuitars Fair enough then. I might try setting my own like that but how does setting it like that benefit functionality where applicable? Or does it?
@GranvilleGuitars Жыл бұрын
@@someoneelse101 Firstly, it's the proper way to do it. All bridges designed to work on a perpendicular pivot point need for that point to return to the right spot or it will never stay in tune or return to pitch. Second if the knife edges on the bridge plate do not rest on the perpendicular then those edges will wear out prematurely. Just do it.
@someoneelse101 Жыл бұрын
OK. Tried it with the Edge Pro II only to discover the bridge plate is supposed to remain fluch with the body. The bridge is shagged out though and shall soon be replaced
@someoneelse101 Жыл бұрын
Oh, Schaller make a device called a Sure Claw that adjusts the springs with a geared system that involves turning with on Allen wrench vs the two adjustment screws commonly found in trems. Have you tried it and if so what were first impressions?
@geekguitars5 жыл бұрын
I'm personally not a fan of Floyd Rose trems or any trem for that matter. However, aside from the Real McCoys, Ibanez makes some of the best double locking trems I've seen. The Edge and Lo Pro Edge systems rock. Vigier also makes a great Floyd variant, no knife edges, I think he uses ball bearings instead so it won't wear out. As to the pickup and pickguard change, I'm not really feeling it. Don't get me wrong, the Green Dot universe that Trey has used for eons is my favorite, this one with the mirror guard and white pearl binding is a close second. I just don't think they match up well. It'd be cool if the inlays and binding all matched that green... that'd be bad assery to the max!!

It's not set at a tilt. When set up in the way I described, the bridge is perpendicular to the posts.
