Almaty is worth spending some time in - my favourite was taking a cableway to a local mountain top to check out the Kazakh memorial Beatles statue. Easy transit to nearby Kyrgyzstan capital Bishkek and from there to the lake- Issuk kul. It won't disappoint. Used to be a favourite holiday destination for the Russkies during the Soviet period. Well worth visiting central Asia and from Urumqi it's easy to do.

So jealous of him being there! I would be eating so many kao baozi and fruits. I'd cross the border to that city designed by that Japanese arhcitect where Xi Jinping met those leaders from Central Asia not too long ago and then go to I think, Uzbekistan to see the architecture of Samarkand!

Naysayers would say that the Chinese government knows who you are and loves you. So they let you use your camera wherever. But it wouldn't be the same for ordinary people.
