On the Couch: The History of The Accüsed, The Accüsed A.D. & Their Members-Part I: The Accüsed

Punk and Northwest music historian David Ulysses Portnow takes a look at The Accüsed and The Accüsed A.D., including the band members and all of the other groups that they’ve been a part of. Also examined is the controversy over the use of the Accüsed name. Accüsed founding member Tom Niemeyer objects to Blaine Cook and Alex Sibbald naming their band The Accüsed A.D. Two camps have emerged on social media, one allied with Blaine and the other loyal to Tom. The ensuing debate has slightly tainted the legacy of The Accüsed as the founders of crossover. These interviews include an unbiased, journalistic exploration into the origins of the dispute, and the reasons for its persistence.

Tommy used to work at Easy Street Records in West Seattle in the late 80's early 90's. I remember going there and seeing him, I was maybe 13. In the late 90's Alex used to own/run a rehearsal studio in West Seattle my friends band played at, and we used to brink beers with him and BS. Alex gave me 4 signed LPs by Him, Tommy and Blaine. I was young and stupid and lost them. But the fact it happened was one of the coolest things ever to me. I love The Accused and have been a fan since the first time I heard The Return Of Martha Splatter Head in 1988. Man those were the days!!!!

Hello Tommy. I am a fan in Japan. Tommy, please keep the band going. I have been waiting for the band to come to Japan for over 30 years. While Blaine and Alex were in another band (Toe Tag), you kept the band. The album (The Curse Of Martha Splatterhead) released in 2009 was a good album. I still listen to the album. Alex is a great bass player. I want Alex to play the bass on Accused. Tommy, you are the only Accused guitar player. Your guitar playing is great. Fast picking, crunchy guitar riffs, melodic solos, only you can do it. Only you can play a guitar riff like "Pounding Nails". I look forward to welcoming you back to the music scene with your new band.

Was there good show but definitely not the same without Blaine. Also lucky enough to them with both Blaine and Tommy back in the 90’s at the Gothic and Azatlan theaters . Met tommy and drank Jäegermeister with him before the gothic show. Good times and definitely sad they split up

For me, it’s not like the first guy who started it gets the name. Look at Judas Priest and Napalm Death, the first incarnations are not what made the band to that succes. It’s about which musicians or one musician has that chemistry to create that unique sound of the band. It’s like the Cro-Mags, Harley owns the name now, he started it, but John Joseph and Parris Mayhew are responsible for that awesome sound and songs on Age Of Quarrel. The Accüsed, it’s gotta be Tommy and Blaine. I mean, Sepultura….same story.

Fucking love The Accused! I have a guitar body that I got off the stage at a show where Tommy smashed the guitar and gave the neck to someone in the audience. I grabbed the body from the stage while he was doing that. It was at Dante's in Portland. Tommy signed it at a show the next tour! Thanks Tommy!

That's Awesome Always liked the Accused. It's Crazy Tommy is the only original Member. I was listening to their More fun than a Open Casket Funeral album and their Martha's Splattershead Maddest Stories ever Told Album.
