As an adult man and father of boys , Ian is an inspiration and wonderful example of a man with the upmost courage , determination, generosity, caring and compassion. Roberts shows here a terrific courage and dignity shown on a surprisingly wide range of issues. So he's surely a role model for many people. And one heck if a player as well, I would have Roberts for sure in my all-time Blues 17. Perhaps even the typical gay obsession with fitness gave him an edge as he never carried a spare tire around the middle, apparently not even now.

He definitely shattered the image of what people expected of a gay man as he would be the last person you’d expect to come out as he was an aggressive, hard hitting enforcer. Mario Fenech who we all know has a highlight reel of stinks would tell you that if you were a gay man back in that era you were perceived as weak but he also said that Ian changed his perception forever when he came out.
