On The Farm | The Final Nitrogen Application - May 20

We finished all the potatoes on the Sunday evening prior to the much needed rain on the following Tuesday. With the destoner washed, greased and put to bed & the arms back on the tractor we head out to the fields once more with the fertiliser spreader behind. This time putting the final pass of nitrogen on the winter wheat and the spring barley crops.

Hi Toby - We split the applications so the first two fed more on the further behind parts of the field but the final application aims to push the better parts to reach their potential.

Why do you pull though the headland when fert spreading at the end of the run each time

It’s the way they’ve set up and used the fertiliser spreader here as it was missing a small triangle between runs on the end. (Before I joined two years ago). I am going to have a play around with it next year.

Concerning the data management; give a look at the website of a German manufacturer called Exatrek (exatrek.de). They produce modules that plug in your CANbus plug and register every parameter linked to the CANbus network (engine RPM, fuel use, draught) but also working times in the field and on the road. Their platform is fully customizable regarding entering fields (boundaries) and machine management. At the University of Ghent we use it for research concerning soil compaction (data at RTK precision) but their app is made for contractors and large farmers needing an overview of their fleet to calculating work times etc.. Really pleased with the performance and their easy to use app! Give a quick look and let me know what you think about it or if you might have some questions don't hesitate!

So weird that how you go right through the headland and then reverse to turn around, fert spinner missing some spots? Never seen anyone do that. Don't need to do that if you've spread fert on the headlines first as you do.

The spreader was leaving a small miss on the ends between the tramlines (like a small triangle). I’m going to have a play around with the settings next year to see if we can avoid doing the extra over the headland tramline and leave no misses.

All that technology and electrics, and you are having to run down crop and the end of each bout? Why not alternate the side of the field you start each time you put an application on? Hit the tramlines lines the same way but just do it in reverse order. That way ur N will be a LITTLE more accurate
