Right before when they got to the studio. I wasn’t fully convinced that it was all a prank however bc how the fuck does Mel Gibson sign on to an “it was all a prank” movie? I was expecting either Dylan to be working for Gary the maniac caller, or something to that effect. One of Elvis's other station workers being 'in' on the plot, etc. I totally saw a 'gotcha moment' coming but I couldn't decide what it would be. I really didn't think that it was all going to be a prank. It's probably the most predictable, unpredictable movie I have seen in a while if not ever. Definitely a weird one, but it was entertaining at least and kept you on your seat even if the script was weak. I will say, Once it is revealed that the Gary maniac caller was a 'prank and then Dylan (who was supposedly the only person not in on the prank) ends up dying in the stairwell,' it was incredibly obvious that Dylan's 'death' didn't actually happen and they played a double, reverse prank on Elvis. I knew as soon as Elvis got in the car to go home after Dylan's 'death' that Dylan was going to be in the front seat of the car.
@horrorable1970
@horrorable1970 5 ай бұрын
Yeah, I felt the same - I suppose there may have been an original ending (script) that had Dylan to be working alongside the maniac caller or something to that effect but it SMACKS of a last minute change to go with some meta-style 'gotcha' moment, doubling down on the double reverse gotcha. This had a great concept that was simply marred by the last minute change at the end...

It's a movie that gave up on itself. Tension was all backwards. By the end there were no stakes. Watch Ransom and Pontypool. They are much better. Put the two together, it could have been a great movie. It is very easy to make "On the Line" a better movie in your head. The reality is just a slap in the face. I had to watch the Lego Movie afterwards just to feel self worth again.

I think it’s much more brilliant than the “it was all just a dream” because it is actually taking place, whereas in the dream scenario, we’re left feeling disappointed because who actually has dreams that are THAT detailed, THAT precise, THAT layered with different characters and their development in a story? A prank is a much better wrap-up. I think anyone who is disappointed with this film is just being a real life Dylan moments before the stairs
@horrorable1970
@horrorable1970 5 ай бұрын
The disappointment comes from the fact that everything leading up to that moment is effectively a sham for the viewer; there's been unreliable narrators in films before and as long as the payoff is effective it makes you look at the film in a totally different way. Films like 'Atonement' do this far more impactfully - imagine if at the end of 'Die Hard' Hans Gruber turned round to John McClane and said: 'hey buddy, we've got cameras all around the building and this was all just a prank' it wouldn't have such a great payoff at the end...

Was the plot twist surprising? Yes. It's also surprising if your car explodes, your wife leaves you or you suddenly get fired or catch Ebola. That doesn't make it good. In fact it's just a troll of the audience. Who in the FUCK thinks it's a good idea to give the middle finger to your audience? Like seriously? You might as well just have the entire cast just look at the camera and say "FUCK YOU AUDIENCE! GET A LIFE!". What the hell were they thinking?
@paulpena5040
@paulpena5040 Ай бұрын
Btw just a little rant about plot twists. NOBODY CARES HOW CLEVER YOU ARE. Just write a damn good story. The Usual Suspects had an amazing plot twist, one of the more genuine and interesting ones and yet it didn't even do that well at the box office. Meanwhile, Star Wars, Jaws, Rocky, Close Encounters, Titanic all of these massive blockbusters HAD NO PLOT TWIST and they changed cinematic history.

Given that the producer Dylan was brand new, the entire movie I thought he was actually in on it. The ending really surprised me. The movie is pretty terrible. It’s a shame we have Mel Gibson in Hollywood jail. He’s more talented than this. That said, while I can’t recommend it, it is watchable. I’ll also say though that the movie suffers from a problem that many movies and TV shows have when one or more characters is lying, which is that they are all amazing actors. What I mean is the character Mel plays is as good as acting as Mel Gibson, as is every other character in the movie, including Dylan. They are all amazing actors who are pretending as if they are fearful and about to die. It’s just unrealistic.

what’s the point of the beginning scene with the “messiah” character
@horrorable1970
@horrorable1970 5 ай бұрын
I think the 'messiah' character was just a red-herring, to give audiences someone that may have been the 'caller' - I can't remember if Dylan is in the scene when the Messiah appears but if not then there's not much point to the character. Could be a plot hole.

They should’ve just blown the shit up and had one person survive and Gary come visit them in the hospital but they strapped and shoot Gary in the head or something like this ending pissed me off

Saw the movie, liked the plot for the most part and surprised they got me not once but almost twice. Which to me makes the movie new and more interesting.

I’ve seen so many horrible movies. This one definitely wasn’t the best, But the fact that people are calling the movie “downright horrible” must be upset they got goofed at the end. It was probably the biggest curveball I’ve seen lmao.

I hated this movie because it had such potential only to give me the middle finger at the end. It is my least favourite movie EVER and if anyone asks me why I will point them to this review. I will never understand how anyone thought this was a good enough movie to release to the public.

You said halfway through the movie, you called it would be a prank? What part exactly made you get onto the idea? Like specifically?

Hi James, I think the initial flag was when he hazed the new recruit in the booth at the beginning - that was the first foreshadowing indicator - as we'd just come out of the meeting with his boss that his ratings were down, etc it felt a little jarring, that he needed to do something to elevate the polls...then things just started to become a little more implausible as the film continued - that this guy had SUCH an agenda and his military style planning was a lot like The Joker from The Dark Knight. Just had a hunch from the offset.
