Is it possible, today, to live differently? Can we leave the sedentary way of life to hit the road and reconnect with nomadism? Without belonging to the great family of the circus or that of travel, more and more of them are trying to escape. On foot, in a trailer, in a converted truck, they try to create their space of freedom, on the fringes of a system they consider paralyzing. We followed them for over a year.
00:00 Before quitting his job as a warehouseman and his apartment, Nono, 27, had “a lump in his stomach”. Until he meets a band of punk-backpackers and decides to follow them. He knows in the first times the street, the sleeve, walks his backpack and his dogs from squats to squats. It was five years ago. Since then he has bought a truck which he fitted out himself and earns his living by touring France during the agricultural seasons. Always in gang, they go from financial problems to mechanical problems but happy, on a road where nothing ever goes as planned. A road where Nono will meet love in the person of Aurélie. A young 27-year-old punk who finances her backpacker life by working as a nurse. Nono also shares the road with her “sister”, her best friend Jimica. She, too, has not found her place in what she calls the “metro-work-sleep”. Like him, she comes from the provincial petty bourgeoisie. With her high school diploma in her pocket, she decides that her truck will now be her home, and, like Nono, it has been going on for 5 years.
36:20 The road has its beautiful stories but also its shipwrecks. Pierre-Anaël, 28, dreamed of nomadism but after six years of backpacking, odd jobs in squats, his road is limited to the sidewalk where he begs. When we meet him, he is worn out, decides to get it over with and fall back into line. He now dreams of an apartment, a job and a family, like everyone else. But it is easier to exit the system than to enter it. It is this journey with an uncertain outcome that we filmed for a year.
44:53 Joel is 49 years old. For 25 years, he worked as a truck driver. He has a house, a family but a serious problem with alcohol. An addiction that will make him lose everything. Despite the treatments and hospitalizations, nothing helped. One day he decides to play his last card by realizing a childhood dream: to live in a caravan with horses. He builds it himself and goes straight ahead. That was two years ago, he hasn't had a drop of alcohol since. Thanks to the RSA and the generosity of the people he meets, he now travels from village to village, with Tim, an apprentice trailer driver.
