On the Trail - Episode 5 - Cutoffs Aren't Always Bad

We’ve all heard of the Donner party and their ordeal in the Sierra Nevada mountains in 1846. As young Virginia Reed would write “never take no cutoffs and hurry along as fast as you can.” But not all cutoffs were bad. In this video we look at the Sublette (Greenwood/Hitchcock) Cutoff that the Stephens-Townsend-Murphy party took in 1844, and how it became to be known as “The Parting of the Ways.”
