Yes, so true and I've watched all three different Cleopatra, the one in 1936, this one and the 2002, which is the worst. It showed an immature Cleopatra who acted on impulse and was a sugar baby to cesar. Taylors version showed the contrast between a male and female ruler and how despite her list of attributes, title and wealth she still wasn't as respected which made the roman men disdain for her much more believable. A beautiful queen who knew her worth and wasn't afraid to use her intelligence. They made it seem as if it was her beauty that bewitched them when truly it was her intelligence and defiance.

Roman movies today no longer portray Roman soldiers wearing short skirts that bare the legs. It somehow is more accurate. But movies from the 1950s - 1960s were definitely unmatched when it comes to the script and the acting. So far only two movies from the late 20th century and the early 21st century that features Romans made my list. Gladiator and the Eagle.
