Yes, so true and I've watched all three different Cleopatra, the one in 1936, this one and the 2002, which is the worst. It showed an immature Cleopatra who acted on impulse and was a sugar baby to cesar. Taylors version showed the contrast between a male and female ruler and how despite her list of attributes, title and wealth she still wasn't as respected which made the roman men disdain for her much more believable. A beautiful queen who knew her worth and wasn't afraid to use her intelligence. They made it seem as if it was her beauty that bewitched them when truly it was her intelligence and defiance.

Roman movies today no longer portray Roman soldiers wearing short skirts that bare the legs. It somehow is more accurate. But movies from the 1950s - 1960s were definitely unmatched when it comes to the script and the acting. So far only two movies from the late 20th century and the early 21st century that features Romans made my list. Gladiator and the Eagle.

No argument from me whatsoever. I have no idea if the 1917 silent film even exists anymore. The sheer scale of this 1963 film is difficult to grasp. The size of the sets and the detail is amazing. That word gets used entirely too often but I feel "amazement" is the correct response.

Cleopatra is EGYPTIAN WITH EGYPTIAN BLOOD. I suggest you go read before posting that rubbish on here. No Greek can show or have that power. Only Egyptians can!

@@NiNGamingNetwork you cleopatra was of Macedonian decent. Her dynasty was started by Ptolemy, one of Alexander the Great’s generals. Her bloodline was Macedonian for the most part with some Persian somewhere in there. en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cleopatra

Well the Romans did not have an official name for itself. The term "SPQR" did not have the same meaning as our current format, "The Republic of _____". But, they understand that the term "Imperium Romanum" referred to the entire territory that was held under the dominion of Rome. And Imperium Romanum translated to the Roman Empire, although its entire meaning might not be totally equivalent to our understanding of "empire".

She said, "on your knees", he gets on one knee.... so he still didn't take any notice.

"On your knees" she said but the way she handled him, she might well have said "bend over" instead 🤣

They say several times “Roman Empire”. At the time of Cleopatra and Antony there wasn’t any Roman Empire, Rome was still a republic.

0:34 You can really see Elizabeth Taylor’s tracheotomy scar in this scene - it was part of the reason her costumes included so many big necklaces. The tracheotomy was the result of a bout with pneumonia that left her gasping for air - it was a minor incision, and she later had surgery to remove the scar.

Thank you for a comment that contributes something. It is somewhat disheartening to read the "comment" section on KZbin only to see proof that a million monkeys with typewriters do NOT create Hamlet.

Am I only miss the times, when in movies adults talked to each other like adults, and not like constantly offended children?

Anthony seemed pretty offended to me, and Cleo acted rather childish in her petty determination to humiliate him. So I don't know what you're getting at.

Mark Antony was in love with Cleopatra. He would have knelt and asked her forgiveness by kissing her foot if she had granted him a private audience with her. I assure you that.
