Yeah it’s so soft that their out of conference schedule is Akron, western Michigan, and Marshall. It’s one thing if you have a bad schedule but you tried to schedule good teams and they just ended up being bad by the time you get to playing them. It’s another to not even schedule a single out of conference power 5 team. Pretty weak from the school

The defense is elite and the offence could afford to be conservative and run the clock out missing both starting tackles. If you watched that game, it never felt like UT couldn't turn it on at any minute. They simply didn't have to,

So basically it initially stems from the 2017 UCF claim of a national championship as an undefeated G5 since they did not make the playoff as an undefeated G5. This eventually evolved into the 2021 G5 Cincy team that was undefeated getting the fourth playoff spot just to get utterly razed by an actually decent major program. by raising the playoff team amount to 12, one spot (12 realistically) is being permanently allocated to a G5 team because everyone loves an underdog story so maybe that team can upset the five seed. but also two G5 teams will probably make it to the playoff within three or four years and both will get their head coaches poached immediately after so there is no sustainability of program and it is actually bad for G5 in my opinion

You can gloss over the 12 undefeated G5 teams in the era, but shortly after the 2008 season, the MWC actually submitted an official 8-team playoff after the season cuz they were mad that their undefeated teams kept getting shafted. When this was rejected by the P5 it launched the most significant anti-trust lawsuits against the NCAA in recent history. Essentially the G5 got so pissed off they went nuclear and nearly destroyed the entire league. - 12 university $240 million class action civil suit against the NCAA and BCS - 3 state government criminal lawsuit against the NCAA and BCS - FBI investigation against the NCAA and BCS - US Department of Justice Investigation and 48 count felony lawsuit against the NCAA and BCS - US Senate investigation and trial of the NCAA and BCS This case is probably the single most reason why we dont have 2 conference league, and its also likely part of the reason why the G5 got a spot in the playoffs. The federal portions of this lawsuit were for BILLIONS of dollars, and it really doesnt look good when you have US senators on the record stating that the league has a system of blatant corruption and obvious anti-competitive behavior in violation of anti-trust laws that were historically used to destroy trillion dollar companies.

@@Foggydidwhat To be fair this topic is very taboo in college football. In part because it really changes the narrative of how the CFP came into being. That narrative per ESPN and other media is people were mad about the SEC in the 2011 bowl and then planned to create the CFP. Seperate from the case this narrative has a lot of holes in it, but perhaps most glaring is that the US Senate trial hearings as part of the G5 lawsuits occurred in June of 2013. In this trial under oath the executive committee of the NCAA and BCS stated there were no plans for a playoff, which completely contradicts the SEC narrative. Now the NCAA is dumb, but I have a hard time buying they are willing to commit felony perjury in front of congress dumb, especially when there is nothing to gain from lying in that scenario.

I would recommend you looking up how both SEC championship game bids and playoff bids work nowadays. Tennessee will likely finish in front of Georgia if Tennessee can split the Bama and Georgia games. It is not east versus West anymore, it is just conference. Missouri will somehow end up as the top SEC because they have a dumb easy schedule, even though they are like the seventh SEC team.
