When cutting my logs, would I let them air dry for 2 to 3 yrs then mill them ?or do you mill them first then air dry ? They are white oak logs here in Missouri . It will be a long and steady process but well worth the wait 👍🏻just trying to cover all questions and any other research I’m doing before I tackle this life changing process “meaning NO MORTGAGE”
@OnBeaverCreek4 жыл бұрын
I recommend milling first. Stack/sticker them so they will dry and to minimize warping. No mortgage- worth it!

What did you treat your log cabin with??
@OnBeaverCreek4 жыл бұрын
I used a stain from Home Depot with the color name of Tahoma Brown. I did not mix the stain first. Instead, I put on a base coat of the thin unmixed part in the top of the can then I used the pasty pigment in the bottom of the can as a "glaze" to make dark highlights.

Do you make a temp plan for a full dove tail jig ,,,,,no,gap, 8" x 4 " long beam
@OnBeaverCreek4 жыл бұрын
Hi. No, only half dovetail. The upper cut of the half dovetail notch slopes straight outward to the exterior face of the log so that any water is directed out and won't get trapped in the notch. A full dovetail slopes toward the notch and can allow water to get trapped there..

How did the builders figure this out in the 1800s? They never had formal training and they also used different size logs? There must be some secret that I can't even find with the use of the internet. So frustrating!!!!!! Log cabins/homes never had the same sized (sawmill cut) logs i.e., dimensional lumber. How did the old pioneers do it? They never had templates. I will be building a true hand hewn 1800s style half dovetail log home as soon as I find the secret. :( Any help would be appreciated.

I have looked at one at Michie Tavern in Charlottesville, VA. It's hand hewn inside and outside, round top and bottom. All different sized timbers. Every joint looks different. Looks like they just did it by eye. It's about 200 years old and looks great. I think the"trick" is to get started and figure it out as you go. Good luck to you!
