I keep coming back to this interview. Ten years ago when I first heard it I just felt Mary's words to be so enchanting in the most intimate and familiar way. I still feel the same... Poetry has the quality of a spell, she said, and I cannot think of a better way to start understanding it. Thank you for keeping this beautiful conversation on line for us to enjoy it.

i found this interview when i was 21, 10 years ago. I had just endured one of life's many 'crash a burn' moments and sought solace in poetry and conversation. I was mystified by Marie's feminine wisdom and fleshy lack of pretence (i think her poetry holds that balance brilliantly also). She is so theological, yet so HERE and so honest about the fact that she often feels like she isn't here at all, like we all do. I remember thinking that this conversation was a tonic, and i have revisited it time and time again. MH is one of my favourite poets and people, she is a rockstar to me!

As always, just so meditative, taking one to a place of zen- an intuitive understanding and acknowledgement which resonates in the depths of the soul, without thought, just a peaceful knowing. Nourishment.

Compassion is not the ultimate virtue. What we hunger for is UNDERSTANDING. Understanding encompasses all other virtues
@monicamaldonadoliceaga69192 жыл бұрын
I believe that what we call UNDERSTANDING is a form of compassion but it's not as deep as compassion itself, because understanding involves only a mental process whereas compassion embraces and bridges the understanding of the mind with the wisdom of the heart.

Reza Aslan should be on NPR's On Being with Krista Tippett where he could open up.
