@D R So in this situation you would have been calm, cool and collected, would not have felt frustration, would have been, basically, a robot? Charlie Enright is a HUMAN BEING, and as professional as he is, there is no shame in him having a moment of panic, of trying to decide in a rapidly developing situation what the best thing to do was -- and he is NOT going to let go of the tiller and possibly make things worse! I absolutely agree that there should be someone at the bow on every boat in every in-port race watching to see what's going on. From other video I've seen, Guyot had someone at the bow, but the OBR wanted to get some footage of them from the stern and so that person was turned facing the stern rather than looking around them as they should have been. What that person should have done was tell the OBR they could get photos of him doing his job and remained facing outward to see what was going on around him. So even having someone at the bow failed in this instance. It was all in-the-moment, sudden and tragic. Criticising Charlie for screaming at Guyot is pointless.

It won't help them but it's also time to acknowledge and celebrate HolcimPRB for a consistently great performance throughout the entire race. Let's not forget Guyot. I feel so sorry for those guys. For everyone saying Guyot should have had a bowman. I dont think any of the boats did. Certainly the person on the bow of 11th hour was their OBR who is not allowed to be involved in the sailing of the boat. Malizia also had their OBR on deck. You can't blame Guyot for something that none of the teams did. They needed their crew available for the tacking. In the bigger picture it looks like 11th hour got slightly headed coming out of the tack (or overlayed the mark) and Guyot got lifted towards them. They probably didn't realise they made up so much space, so quickly and 11th hour would have been hidden behind the jib from the helm of Guyot. This doesnt excuse it, a look to leeward around the jib or an early tack by Guyot (looked like they would have layed the mark and had inside overlap on 11th hour) would both have prevented it... But this happens in racing in all fleets. Any Helm out there who says he or she has not for a short period been distracted from what is in his blindspot is lying.

I know that cycling and sailing are different.....but...In the Tour de France if the race leader goes down in a crash, the rest of the peleton, and especially the other contenders, sit up and wait for the race leader to get back on the road and catch up. It's not a rule that they do so. It's simple sportsmanship, and the desire to win a race based on performance, not a rival's bad luck. It is considered very bad form to attack when the race leader is incapacitated, especially if it was not their fault. The same should hold true here. 11th Hour was damaged due to the bad judgement of another boat's crew. The race should be neutralized and restarted after 11th Hour fixes their boat. It's the only sportsman-like solution. And if I were the skipper of Holcim, as soon as I learned that 11th Hour was holed, I would have turned back to port.

Also there was a build up, it's totally possible to see how it unfolded, unfortunately what was a really good chance for Guyot to overtake 11th hour ended up in this. After the tack by 11th hour they were slightly headed and Guyot got lifted. I don't think Guyot realised how much ground they had gained in the lift and could have probably layed the mark if they tacked earlier... I think they were focused on preparing the tack and 11th hour were hidden behind the jib from the helmsman. Happens in all fleets from time to time. I hope that 11th Hour can get patched up sufficiently to limp into Genoa but is there a time limit? If so, the race director should wave it given that their boat was not at fault. Guyot must be penalised - not having a crew member in the bow during close inshore racing is extremely negligent; either DQ from this leg or allowed to finish but BEHIND 11th Hour.

I do hope they get awarded points in the redress process. Guyot was retired with a Black Flag penalty, I believe. Guyot could not get their bowsprit fixed in time so will have to divert to their home base rather than sailing all the way to Genova.

If this wasnt a race, both boats just out sailing under the normal COLREGs, then yes, 11th Hour would be sharing the blame to a very high degree, probably the majority of it. But, this is a race, sailed under the RRS (Racing Rules of Sailing) and as such, you are absolutly allowed to do a tack like that, in fact its what is expected since they were rounding a mark on the course. In this case it is 100% the fault of Guyot. But sure, you are correct that if 11th Hour hadnt tacked, the collision wouldnt have happened, but that isnt really relevant at all here. I think that the nuances of the RRS make people look at this very differently, us racing sailors see it one way, and those that dont know, or even know of, the RRS will likely see it a very different way. This is not an uncommon type of accident in high stakes racing, it's just that the outcome is so much worse with big powerful lightweight boats like these, compared to say normal production boats, dinghies or even match racing boats. Made even worse of course by the fact that is the race leader getting hit by last placed boat, and it is a bit ironic that Guyot was only able to be at this Leg thanks to the generousity of 11th Hour selling their spare mast to Guyot to get them back in the race.

@Robinlarsson83
@Robinlarsson83 Жыл бұрын
11th Hour most certainly saw Guyot, nothing blocking Charlies line of sight. Guyot obviously didnt see 11th Hour though... And no, 11th Hour definitely shouldnt have turned to port, that would probably have made the collision much worse. 11th Hour was the right of way boat, and that also means that they are the stand on boat, they need to keep their heading and sail the course. They have absolutly no reason to expect that Guyot wouldnt follow the rules or that they had missed 11th Hour, this is racing, Also, you NEVER ever turn to port to avoid a collision in this kind of situation, it just makes things worse, you close the gap to the other boat faster, and if you are the stand on boat, you should not manouver at all until you establish that collision is unavoidable. There wasnt much that 11th Hour could have done here. You cant even argue that werent sailing proper course or anything, they didnt do a dial-down to mess with Guyot, they just tacked where and when they should, and Guyot was expecting them to do so. The wind may have turned a bit to port, making 11th Hour sail a bit lower (also going slower after the tack, thus sailing lower) and making Guyot head up a bit. I assume that Guyot simply caught up to 11th Hour much faster than they expected, and lost sight of them for a little bit, probably missed that 11th tacked, they were in the middle of prep for their own tack as well, making things worse. It did look like Guyot was aiming to turn inside of 11th Hour and take advantage of the gap to the mark, which would have been a great tactical move if they had tacked in the right spot.

@@truegret7778 the first rule of any sailing navigation on the water is that the boat on starboard tack, which was 11th hour racing this time, has the right of way and it is the responsibility of the boat on port tack to give way and allow the right of way boat to proceed on its intended course. In practice the boat with the right of way is not expected or obligated to make any maneuvers to prevent a collision, and in fact with sailing craft, any maneuver he attempted, to sail out of the way of GUYOT, would increase the risk of a collision as it would be so unexpected. The last thing you want to do is start swerving around unpredictably. When I say it is the first rule of sailing, I'm not being hyperbolic. It is, quite literally, the first thing you are taught, and it is the guiding principle after which all other rules apply. That is why the skipper in the video was screaming "starboard" at the other boat to get them to realize that they needed to bear away to pass safely. The fault is 100% with GUYOT. So dangerous. You can see how easy it will be for a sailer in the Sail GP to be guillotined by a flying hull when he doesn't duck down into the hole. It'll happen eventually, it's been close several times already. The Sail GP organisers and designers can't be ignorant of the risks and will have blood on their hands. They need a protection system on those Sail GP boats (side bollards?) or a rule of no foiling before the start line, as that's where the bifffo occurs mostly and the boats ride up over others dangerously.

Why didnt the crash tack? It eas clear that boat hadnt seen them
@rcpmac
@rcpmac Жыл бұрын
For the same reason that you don’t drive on the opposite side of the road when a car is heading for you in your lane, because if the person in the wrong realizes at the last moment what they are doing they will correct course and then you absolutely will have a collision. These boats often pass very closely and it is assumed the other boat knows you are there.

@Robinlarsson83
@Robinlarsson83 Жыл бұрын
Yeah, if it was our of nowhere, sure. But, this tack should have been expected by Guyot, and they must have been preparing to tack, if not ready to go at a moments notice. They took the inner track around the previous mark to overtake Malizia, just minutes earlier, and as Niall said in the commentary, it looked just like Guyot was planning to do the exact same thing here, tack just inside of 11th Hour to try to overtake, that was the obvious course of action. And, not to forget, Guyot didn't have to tack to avoid the collision, they could have ducked behind 11th Hour without to much difficulty, you know, like boats often do in races on upwind courses ;) I know that it isn't super easy to do that duck, but they should have been able to do it. They were going fast enough for the rudders to have good authority, but likely not so much wind that they would wipe out instantly if they dove down 10-20 degrees.
@nroose
@nroose Жыл бұрын
@@Robinlarsson83 I mean, they did drive down, just too late. And 11th hour headed up and slowed down, cutting off the lane Guyot had to duck.Seems like the fact that 11th hour tacked when they did gave them even more time to plan and not get in this situation.

These guys have my honest feelings. But what will happen to Team Guyot? Will they be disqualified or even have to pay the damage plus some serious extra? Hope so! Already from the first video taken with the drone it was clearly obvious that there was no need for sailing this course and there was plenty of room. If they can't see from the steering position a crew member must be forced to go on watch during tight manouvers as this in port races. The punishment should be as hard to never let anyone forget how stupid this was.

There is no excuse but an outright ban for life! Harsh yes but at this level this is just off the charts NON excusable! People could have DIED HERE! This comment from a lifetime sailor, you have a bowman in this situation!!!!!
@OhanaNZ
@OhanaNZ Жыл бұрын
Perhaps a "life ban" is a bit much? Best to let matters cool down before making any big calls. The fact is that it was a racing incident, utter incompetence on the part of Guyot but these things do happen. Super hard given that the overall effect on the results of the race are so profound - one crash and it is all over. With 11th Hour really on a roll, all hearts go out to the entire team - rotten misfortune and unbelievably frustrating. The Guyot guys have fronted up in a sportsmanlike manner, but of course that is scant solace to Charlie Enright and the crew.

The bowman is the on board reporter of 11th Hour who is not supposed to participate in sailing actions. Strange though that the skipper of Guyot did not appear to be outside the cockpit like 11th Hour. Devastating for both teams. Guyot has taken responsability and retired. Hopefully 11th Hour can resume racing and finish the race.

This is just a game of sailors in toys of milliardaires. These boats are too fast, too complicated to handle, and in their cockpits, nobody can see enough to make fast collision avoidance manouvers, especially in in port races, where all the boats are very close together. I have experienced simular occasions at soaring competitions with high performance sailplanes. If they would have competed in an old "Kielzugvogel", they could have shown the perfect grade of professionalism of sailing with much less risks.

And there is technology in use, look at the America's Cup, that would alert boats if they are near the boundaries or another boat. Where was the race committee? I could see them in their orange speed boats all over the place. Are they there for taking photos or are they there to make sure that the race is being done with fairness & adhering to the rules?

Inexcusable. Where was GUYOT's bow watch? “Their boat appeared in front of me and it was too late.” - Dutreux. 11th Hour didn't "appear," they were established on their ley line and had the right of way. Dutreux should be censured and handed a lengthy suspension.

The 3 remaining boats continued to race the 2200 mile final leg denying race leader, 11th hour, through no fault of their own, the chance to finish and very probably win the overall race. This is shameful. They should have turned around and returned to port which would have allowed for a delay for repairs and a restart. Instead they are taking advantage of the situation. This separates competitors from true sportsmen. It’s not who I thought they were and gives the sport a dark side. They’ve had a day to think about this and I haven’t heard anything different at this point. I am now somewhat soured on this event.
