My first jet type rating was on the B-717 at AirTran Airways. The airframe is absolutely rock solid, but the engines and avionics had some initial "teething issues" which needed to be sorted out. By the time they went off to Big D all the kinks had been worked out and they were very reliable. Great short to medium range aircraft.

My first flight was around 1983 in a TWA MD81 from Philadelphia to Chicago on business. When we were cleared for takeoff, the pilot “hit the gas” and I was pressed into my seat like never before. I turned to my colleague and said something like, wow, that’s some acceleration. Soon after, we were in the air and I was having a cheese omelette for breakfast.

I remember as a young teenager back in the mid sixties l would always try & get a window seat near so l could see the Pratt & Whitney JT8-D’s on Douglas DC9’s & Boeing 727’s when l would take off from Essendon Airport in Melbourne before Tullamarine opened on my way to Perth when in those days there wasn’t a direct flight to Western Australia because l think as Essendon runway was too short for the then new jets to take off with a full fuel load to get there hence there was always a change of planes @ Adelaide, anyway the JT8-D’s were much louder & had a far better sound than the newer jobs, back in the better days when the wonderful new Boeing’s & Douglas jetliners were a real adventure to travel on after the DC-6’s & viscounts, it may now be in the name of Progress but it is just not the same & never will be.

I have fond memories of Qantas-Link, using it to travel about Australia's interior a few years back. Especially tho', our B-717 ride, where we were, at first fearfully, seated almost opposite your view. From my experience of DC-9'ers, Mad-Dogs (80's AND 90's), and then the 717, the FIRST thing noticed was how MUCH less noisy those BIG (in comparison with previous engine selections) turbofans were. Given those earlier - MANY years ago - rides, Q-Link's 717's are a vast difference. Still handle like a flying sports car, I am also happy to recall. We were flying/travelling during a period when State elections were being (LITERALLY!!) fought, and yet the everyone we met; aircrews, bus drivers, and hotel staffs, on every segment of our 21-day odyssey were wonderful. LONGING to return. AND, fly "the Link"!!

Great video as always Paul! I love the 717-200, having flown on them with Qantas and Delta. 100% agree they are a robust plane, sure, they mightn't be the most modern, or have the best take off peformance (they have issues in hot weather), but they are solid and dependable. I really need to go on another one!

The outdoor jet bridge doesn't seem to line up with the door opening at the bottom of the B317. There is about a foot step up, as seen at 3:44. Is this typical, or can they be adjusted? It would seem they should be adjustable for different airplanes, as pointed out how much taller the A320 is.

Great Paul, I saw you way above as I live in Hadspen near Launceston and follow the flights. Great video on a classic plane. My first flight was on a DC-9-30 on Ansett!

Another wonderful video Paul and a rare aircraft. I hope to be able to fly Delta's version before they are retired in 2025. I have flown the DC-9, all of the MD series except the MD-90 (which I was supposed to fly in October until COVID and their early retirement).

cheers John. Yep Damn covid brought forward a few retirements. I'm yet to fly on a 757 so it was a pity to see American retire theres. 767s too, I think, although atleast I have flown that aircraft type with BA and QF.

Hey Paul! May I know what device are you using for shooting? I'm impressed by the incredibly high resolution of the image of the sea especially when you were flying over the strait. Thanks! 😃

Cheers mate. It's a Gopro hero 9 black. The zoom footage is a Sony handycam although it's not particularly good.

The B52 re engine program has selected the F130 engine which is the military designation of the BR715 engines that powers this aircraft..

Correct, as I said in the video. :) I think they’ll be manufactured in the USA to keep the nationalists happy.
