CLIP DESCRIPTION:
Harmonica (Charles Bronson) gets dropped off at the train station with three assassins including Stony (Woody Strode) waiting for him. All three are gunned down by Harmonica in a shootout.
FILM DESCRIPTION:
In Sergio Leone's epic Western, shot partly in Monument Valley, a revenge story becomes an epic contemplation of the Western past. To get his hands on prime railroad land in Sweetwater, crippled railroad baron Morton (Gabriele Ferzetti) hires killers, led by blue-eyed sadist Frank (Henry Fonda), who wipe out property owner Brett McBain (Frank Wolff) and his family. McBain's newly arrived bride, Jill (Claudia Cardinale), however, inherits it instead. Both outlaw Cheyenne (Jason Robards) and lethally mysterious Harmonica (Charles Bronson) take it upon themselves to look after Jill and thwart Frank's plans to seize her land. As alliances and betrayals mutate, it soon becomes clear that Harmonica wants to get Frank for another reason -- it has "something to do with death." As in his "Dollars" trilogy, Leone transforms the standard Western plot through the visual impact of widescreen landscapes and the figures therein. At its full length, Once Upon a Time in the West is Leone's operatic masterwork, worthy of its legend-making title.

Cast: Charles Bronson, Jack Elam, Woody Strode

To fully appreciate the tension of this scene, a person has to watch it in full. It goes on for about ten minutes before Bronson finally shows up, with Jack Elam dealing with a pesky fly, Woody Strode finding a water drip under the water tower, and Al Mulock menaces the telegraph operator. Great acting, all of it wordless, save for the short exchange between Elam and Bronson.

Anyone saying a different actor than Charles Bronson would have been better is missing the talent of the actor and the perfect characterization. Incredible film, incredible performances. Fonda played a great villain.

Yeah he was good, Eastwood turned down the role but I like having a main character who doesn't have the movie star good looks were used to. Everything about these spaghetti westerns tends to look really unpolished and quite authentic, the greasy hair, the unshaved faces and weathered faces, the shinny sweat, that alone subverts a lot of the glamour and romance the genera is known for

It's the greatest. There is none better.
@lw3646
@lw3646 Жыл бұрын
@Dravianpn02 that's up for debate, it does borrow from previous films. It's definitely the most stylish western I've seen, probably the best spaghetti western I've ever seen. The soundtrack is sublime, the detail and authentic costumes and sets look great, everything with this worn used look to it, sweaty, weathered, unshaved faces, greasy hair. If you were being unkind you might say the film is style over substance in that the characters especially the lead is kind of unknowable, the man with no name who spends 99% of the film being mysterious and unknowable. The story is a bit convulted there's one point in the film where maybe they realised the viewer would be lost where the main character just spends two minutes of exposition telling us what it's all about and it's all about water and so on because he saw a document. Also I'm not sure I even understand this opening scene, 3 men are sent by the villain to kill him, but why when it's stated throughout the film nobody knows who he is and its not till the very climax that the villain realises who this man is. The cinematography is superb and the way the camera glides and moves at times gives a great sense of scope and grandeur which is kind of ironic because its also a film about how the west was not a romantic idealised place but far from it. Greed is the real poison in this film, just like the good, the bad and the ugly it's all about greed, how many people are you ready to kill to get your hands on some stolen gold? In this it's greed again over money and land. Most of the older westerns are really about how order v chaos, good v bad, humanity v nature. Its what you get In My Darling Clementine, Who Shoty Liberty Valance, How the West Was Won, She Wore A Yellow Ribon, Rios Bravos. Other contenders I would argue are Red River because firstly its a western actually about cattle, a flawed protagonist and a sense of what a feat it was and the actual lives of these cattlemen, they don't just exist to be overexcited men who drink whisky and shoot their guns in the air or hold up banks. Dances With Wolves is really good because its not only artful and delicately directed and the romance actually feels natural but the film actually has something to say which spaghetti westerns don't really. Shane is pretty much the embodiment of the story of a man with a troubled past helping protect small town America from the violence and intimidation of rich and powerful bullies. The Searchers is one of the most influential films ever made and to this day is still held up as one of the greatest films ever made. So many other filmmakers have borrowed from it. You've got a director who's scored a perfect 10 in that film. The films got style with its vast locations, the gorgeous colours and the substance as you really get into the heads of its characters and what's driving them, the tone is really dark at times and it manages to convey the sense of hate which some Natives and Americans could feel for eachother at the time.

@@lw3646 the opening was that Harmonica sent a meeting with Frank. Harmonica knew him, we the audience didn't. They were sent in place of Frank, hence why he beats up the guy at the laundromat and then follows him. I don't think it's up for debate. With achieving its goal, OUATITW changed the game. There's always a first. It's a masterclass in filmmaking. The crescendo from beginning to end, when the confrontation happens, hasn't been done as well too many times before or since that film. I feel a film is as good as the goal it set out to achieve and how close it came to that goal. On top of how well constructed, or not, depending on intent, it is to do so. Evil dead 2 achieves its goal but was considered sub par effects at the time due to its limitations, but it's goal was achieved nonetheless and it's immortalized because of it. I feel OUATITW not only achieves its goal with flying colors, but on a technical level for it, every filmmaking device was used for that purpose. Nothing was wasted, mishandled or out of place. As for taking from previous films : literally every film ever made does that. At least its not a straight carbon copy like fistful of dollars.

The quality of the images in the 60s are hard to beat. When i bought the old planet of the apes in blueray i was impressed. It has better quality than majority of the movies of today

What you always hope for in a wild west movie, some sort of 'window' into the expert gunslinger. First 20 minutes, 2 very 'zen' things. The fly. The drinking of the water from the 'drip,' collecting on top of cowboy hat. A person, I know, who teaches Japanese arts likes to talk about how austere a journeyman zen person can be. Eat nothing. Until a bird craps on their lips. Here you have a fly for a snack or water collecting in your hat, from an unexpected source, to sustain you. These 3 got taken down by Harmonica. Never underestimate a cooler looking dude with a gun. These 3 lost sight of that. I had to watch this and then come back to it and then think about it and come back to it again to start to appreciate it. It's a pretty heavy way to start a movie.

When you don't include the few minutes of film before the train comes in and pulls out your missing some of the most remererable scene in all of western film trivia. The part here ... big deal he shoots 3 bad guys like in thousands of other flicks . But the part you left out you won't see in any other film ever. I love the squeek in the windmill and the fly on Elam's face.
