Once Upon a Time in the West ( Italian: C'era una volta il West ) is a 1968 epic spaghetti Western film directed by Sergio Leone. The film stars Henry Fonda cast against type as the villain Frank, Charles Bronson as his nemesis "Harmonica", Jason Robards as the bandit Cheyenne and Claudia Cardinale as Jill, a newly-widowed homesteader with a past as a prostitute.
After making his American Civil War epic The Good, the Bad and the Ugly, Leone had intended to retire from making Westerns, believing he had said all he wanted to say. He had come across the novel The Hoods by the pseudonymous 'Harry Grey', an autobiographical book based on the author's own experiences as a Jewish hood during Prohibition, and planned to adapt it into a film (this would eventually, seventeen years later, become his final film, Once Upon a Time in America). Leone though was offered only Westerns by the Hollywood studios. United Artists (who had produced the Dollars Trilogy) offered him the opportunity to make a film starring Charlton Heston, Kirk Douglas and Rock Hudson, but Leone refused. However, when Paramount offered Leone a generous budget along with access to Henry Fonda, his favorite actor with whom he had wanted to work for virtually all of his career, Leone accepted the offer.
Leone commissioned Bernardo Bertolucci and Dario Argento film critics, who later became directors to help him develop the film in late 1966. The men spent much of the following year watching and discussing numerous classic Westerns such as High Noon, The Iron Horse, The Comancheros, and The Searchers at Leone's house, and constructed a story made up almost entirely of "references" to American Westerns.
For Once Upon a Time in the West, Leone changed his approach over his earlier westerns. Whereas the "Dollars" films were quirky and up-tempo, a celebratory yet tongue-in-cheek parody of the icons of the wild west, Once upon a Time in the West is much slower in pace and sombre in theme.
The music was written by composer Ennio Morricone, Leone's regular collaborator, who wrote the score under Leone's direction before filming began. As in The Good, the Bad and the Ugly, the haunting music contributes to the film's grandeur and, like the music for The Good the Bad and the Ugly, is considered one of Morricone's greatest compositions.
The film features leitmotifs that relate to each of the main characters (each with their own unique theme music) as well as to the spirit of the American West. It was Leone's desire to have the music available and played during filming. Leone had Morricone compose the score before shooting started and would play the music in the background for the actors on set.

People and whole eras come and go, passing and vanishing in a moment like shadows; the rocks and the earth carry on in silence, as if mocking or perhaps just understanding and forgiving of the children for their ignorance and folly. Epic posting Mr. Attia.

I’m a 72 year old....watched a ton of movies in my lifetime and have seen this movie at least 100 times. There’s no CGI, explosions or crazy car chases...just a great revenge plot with terrific actors, beautiful lush sets, the absolute best directing and cinematography and music score. It stands apart from the rest of the genre as the one and only tragic verismo western opera complete with Wagnerian leitmotifs. “The Quick And the Dead” was a poor man’s version of this classic. I’m glad that there’s so many other movie aficionados who appreciate it like I do.

This is a stunning piece of filming.I can see the work and effort that went into the planning of this piece. It pays unique homage to the set designers, actors, location searchers and the sound track, in a highly original way. It deserves it's own special Oscar, a film that gently reminds us that any film is a sum of all of it's parts. Also, it emphasises how balledic OUTITW was and how we, I suspect, miss this unique combination of talents. Thanks for showing me how to make an original film.

Clarifying: This 11min film - not the 1968 movie - Had me in tears and i cant explain why. I wanted the scenes to be similar. I didn't want to see a highway in its place or the train line to go. I'm obviously getting too old and sentimental. To Herve - the framing to match the original is astonishing , the fading and superimposing recounting the then and now is superb. It took me 40mins to watch and i now - just sitting here staring into nowhere. A work of art. Thank you x

the time, the effort, the research to put this together. wow. second only to the movie itself - which is a classic. i remember walking out of the theater after first seeing the film in 1968. it was just a stunningly complete experience. over the years i have watched it soooo many times because of all the attention to detail that was put into this... the direction, the acting, the casting, the editing, the music, the story... everything was timed so well that it is often still relivable as a movie experience. and... i have often wondered where it was filmed and the sets (other than the obvious Monument Valley, AZ stuff). sooo... thanks for the effort to add the dimensions of time to the sets, for finding and tying everything together.

I especially like the Monument Valley scenes. Amazing you can still see the foundation of that building where the buggy stops on the way to Sweetwater and the gate where the hanging scene was filmed. The filmmaker putting himself in the scenes give it a "feel like I am there" touch. The closing scene with Cardinale taking water to the railroad crew has always stood out in my mind. Great!

Congratulations on an impressive work of research and video editing. I've been fortunate enough to visit the Flagstone Site and several of the others a few times. Sadly for us movie buffs the former saloon was pretty well fenced off last time I visited. I was there when they were laying tarmac in the interior to improve housing of the sheep. I took a quick snap with a dodgy camera and I think that can be found on one of the fan sites. I also sneaked away with a fish-plate souvenir I found on the route of the railway into the Western Leone site. We were at Mini Hollywood/Oasys last month and I hope to visit Fort Bravo again in 4 weeks time, weather permitting as November is about the only month with any chance of rain in Tabernas. Also looking forward to receiving the new Book - Behind The Scenes of The Good, The Bad & The Ugly. Still a spaghetti "anorak" in my 75th year! Great to see such a high level on interest in possibly Leone and Morricone's finest work - Once Upon A Time In The West.

This was a remarkable visit to one of my favorite films. I've always wondered what the filming locations and sets looked like today. Very moving - and a technical tour de force. Time to watch the movie again! Thank you for the memories!

Me too I would love to stay in that hotel which was used as the house I am really surprised it is still standing I thought they had purposely built it as a location for the film 🎥 (movie) 🍿

I am so ecstatic to see this video. This movie is no.1 wild west film ever and the background sound effects were much ahead of its time. Everytime I had showed this movie to someone they had not believed that it was made in 1968 (tht old). The video is like a journey taking you to live the moments of movie in a flowing way. Kudos to the spirit of Wild West with this video.

Thank you so much for this Herve The movie was shot in the summer I was born, and it's among the best movies I've ever seen, the filmography, the screenplay, the acting, it was all top notch, so much better than any other western movie.

Fantastic reconstruction! Oh, how the time flies!!! But I am young again seeing the film or its scenes again and again! "Once Upon a Time in the West" is my most favourite one! I saw it as a student in 1975 in Prague for the very first time. I will love it forever! Nice story and divine music!

Thank you so much for putting this video up. Once Upon a Time in the West has to be the very best film that ever came out of the film industry in my opinion. The atmosphere that was created of this time in history was remarkable and all the more so with the amazing score by Morricone. As a projectionist when it was first released I was blessed to be able to project the film to large audiences. I'm now 76 years of age, have seen the film more than a few dozen times, and never tire of it. It is Perfect in every way.

Herve, you nailed it perfectly. I have never seen anything this good. I absolutely love to find locations. I grew up in Southern California back in the 50' and 60's. Almost everywhere you could see the film crews. I have spent hours in backed up traffic while they got the shot! I love this movie! Thank you!
