LOL you are absolutely right but the series was produced in 1987. People in those days had a philosophy of life that was basically "what doesn't kill you, makes you stronger", especially the adults and older people; they weren't exactly careless, more like they didn't care for minor injuries. My grandfather was a farmer and he went through a long life full of hard manual labor and I believe he never even touched a pair of gardening gloves; I still remember his hands, with skin tough and coarse like sandpaper.

As a kid, I felt bad for the sugar molecule that was eaten by one of the bacteria as he/she had half of its body ripped off before the rest of it was eaten.
