I used to one 'n done people all the time in Pokken Tournament (my introduction to fighting games) because I didn't know 2/3 was a thing. I'd only give rematches when I felt like the person was particularly fun to play against or when it was a matchup I struggled with. In my head I just thought it was important to play against as many different people as possible if I wanted to improve. I got pretty good at that game too, so I cringe now wondering how many people I unknowingly pissed off by denying runbacks off of close matches.

This really is frustrating lol. It's not exactly the same, but I mostly play 'Ranked' mode in +R because I don't like reaching out to people on Discord every time I want to play some games, and the fact that it doesn't have rematch of any kind is honestly one of the most frustrating things possible. It's especially rough as a new player, because playing one match and being done, moving onto potentially a different character kind of fucks with your learning, because one match isn't NEARLY enough to scratch the surface of learning the match-up.
@FlippyMcGiantDad

New players from other genres may do this without intention. A lot of games simply throw you back into matchmaking after a match or forces you to manually queue, like shooters or Dota/League. Sometimes even during a match (ie: many a close but losing game of CoD where a party that is half the team quits out and leaves the match at 3v6). Probably want to lose less (after a loss) or sprint away with a single win.

I think I’m the one who mentioned the MK11 thing on twitter. It’s probably the best thing about ranked in that game. You don’t get any points unless you win the set and quitting mid set forfeits the set. The idea of an instant challenge to casual match is great too. In Tekken, it’s bad. And it only gets worse the higher you are in ranked. At the Tekken god ranks, you can wait for a match for 5-20 minutes just to get one and done’d and then the person won’t accept you in ranked again.

This is the kind of thing that makes me glad I mostly just beat up the CPU. :P Something like the star system you showed in Dragonball Fighterz would clue me in on the expectation but without some sort of visual cue, I would never rematch on the assumption that there's thousands of people in ranked. They have no particular affinity for me specifically so why would they want to keep playing me over and over again? Watching stuff like this is super interesting because I tend to be oblivious to a lot the unwritten rules of etiquette. So if I ever dip my toe into ranked, I'll know not to leave immediately!

I absolutely agree. I’m playing ranked SF5 now to get used to playing stick again before Strive is released. One guy kicked my ass, one perfect round in the first match. Second match I won 2-1 in razor close battle. Third I won 2-1. I’d say we both learned from those three matches more than the rest of the nights play. Myself being able to figure out tendencies and adapt and the opponent seeing where they are telegraphing too much. For me this is what the FGC is about. Player vs Player instead of a character vs character match. On that - credit to MK11 (which I’ve been playing mostly until lately). You have to play first to two matches and once it’s run it gives you the option of a casual rematch.

For ranked, there needs to be a point incentive to stay. Maybe the winner wins more and the loser loses less if you hit rematch. In close matches the winner's more likely to leave, especially if they just ranked up or if there's a significant rank gap (they win +5 but lose -200). Playing close sets is a high risk low reward scenario when rank is on the line and that's incredibly harmful for fostering better players. That all said, I think there's harm in playing incredibly long sets against a single player, particularly at low/mid skill levels. They probably have some bad habits that you learn to capitalize on and gets you killed against other players.

I think there should be actual in-game modes or dedicated areas of a lobby for a Best of 3, BO5 and even a FT10 and FT100. It would let players choose what they're looking for and even educate some of the less-informed players about things like first to 100 death matches ... etc.

I only leave when I'm obviously outmatched or the lag is bad. I just did some fighterz sets too. It was pretty bad delay, but I stuck to it. I won the first, he won the second but HE left. I even played a set where I lost the first with bad connection and he was pretty much a lot better than me just do I could actually play a full set. Blazeblue tag is actually pretty cool with it's community cause the few times I played, the people actually stick to the matches.

I mostly play Pokken Tournament DX, and I stopped playing ranked for this very reason. There is no rematch option in ranked. Post match, you can only quit, go back to character select, or find the next opponent, and that seriously bothers me. I always want to run the best 2 of 3, whether I win or loss, so that's why I stick to playing friendlies in that game. - 3 - But of course, I'm in the minority here, because people still one-and-done all the time in that game, even in friendlies. lol

I'm with you on this. Never like one and done players. Rank mode in fighting games should force players to a FT2 no matter what. And if the connection fails the rage quitter should be heavily penalized. Like maybe losing a whole rank.

FINALLY some recognizes this sin for what it is. I don't care if people taunt, if they spam, it's like they're volunteering to tutor me, if they ki charge, its like a game trying to make them pay, even if people plug on me, I just view it as the tekken version of landing a fatality, but one-and-done-ing...oh man, thats like the only thing that gets me pissed. Unless the connection is piss poor I ALWAYS at least play a first to 2, rematching someone who lost at least once just seems like common decency to me. You sir, are a hero, these people need to be publicly shamed

Usually it depends of the connection. if the experience was way too bad the rematch button is a "No". If you got bodied free and your opponent is way out of your league is ok to just hold that L and go away.

Like mentioned in the video, MK11 handles this so well. And fast rematch button as well. Plus the thing that all fighting games still needs to have: optional Negative Edge

One idea I wrote in a similar question about Soulcalibur VI, can't recall if it was he on KZbin or at Reddit but whatever, the thing was that if you played ranked the game was determined by a set of best of 3 always, and like dbfz that's it, you can't milk the same player for points. Or, we can have a rematch system, but the loser is the only one able to choose a rematch or not, again best of 3 only and if the previous loser wins the second game, the third game is obligatory. The thought is if you want to play ranked, you'll have to make some time commitments in order to have a real match. This makes me both happy and sad as one of the greatest scourges to the fun of games are competition. Especially with pay to win dlc characters as we are seeing as a thing nowadays.

I don't see what do you gain from denying a rematch to two players who are eager to play each other. Why shouldn't I be able to play someone for a whole hour if we both wanted to play, regardless of our wins/losses? Loser still has to agree to a rematch in the current system as well. Again, not seeing any benefit of that over both loser/winner agreeing to a rematch. Why give one player less options? It sounds like a horrible system if only one person gets to decide whether both of them have to commit to another game.

I can see both sides. If the matches are good I think wanting more is fine. But on the other hand its not like anyone is entitled to someone else's time. Whether the reason they left is cuz the connection was subpar or they just didnt feel like it I can't get too mad. Sometimes I just don't feel like playing with someone, I've definitely one and done'd on people before (*cough*Vat players)

I agree, but sometimes you just gotta leave. Getting a call from work, forgetting a school assignment, underestimating how much time a match would take, etc. There's an easy solution though, just add message system like the Z stamps from DBFZ. That way, an irl thing comes up and you just hit them with a "got to go" or something.

Interesting idea, you get a bonus amount of points if you run a full set (best of three). Then have the options to either run a casual set or maybe wager more points in a first to five.

Alright I'll rematch most of the time, but I've never been pissed off if someone quits after the first match. I've only been aware that this was such an issue over the last couple of days. I mean if I'm in the mood to play a variety of opponents I'll "one and done". Or if I just didn't have fun playing against someone why would I stick around when I know I'm tilted?
