I love how over the course of the three seasons the mutual respect between Al and Wu slowly grew into mutual affection. It was so cute in the movie when Wu realized that Al was becoming sick with age and gave him the special tea to try to make him feel better.

Agreed, although I would extend that. What made the show great was how all the characters' relationship matured over the show's run. Look at Swearengen and Bullock. "What's your posture, Bullock?" "As you see."

It only now occurred to me that one of the things that must impress Al about Wu is that Wu is clearly not afraid of Al, which would put him in rare company and shows Al that Wu has internal resources and is not to be underestimated. Goddamn, what a good show.

I would have really liked to have seen Wu call in some serious muscle from San Francisco in dealing with the Pinkerton's. Al realized Wu had lots of weight behind him and working with him was clever. Who's going to tell when no one understands?

Wu doesn't have "serious" weight... as demonstrated when Hearst brings in the actual heavy hitters from San Francisco with the Tongs. Hearst ends up letting the Chinese "problem" solve itself & by extension Hearst is the one whose presence/acceptance is what holds the Tong retribution at bay.

That night Wu ends up underneath Al's balcony where he cuts his traditional Chinese long hair and tells Al "Wu, American" to which Al says "and she will hold you to her bosom", Al's way of accepting Wu into the fold. It took a lot of work, but people could cool buildings thousands of years ago. In Persia or somewhere, they had cone shaped clay huts with a spiral ramp running all down the sides. You pay workers to carry water to the top and pour it on the clay, where it trickles down and evaporates, removing heat from the walls.

Milch and the writers actually did extensive research on the speech of the time when writing the script. They found that rather than cursing, people back then would "blaspheme" as a form of profanity but it sounded too silly in the dialog so they just replaced it with modem cursing.

this is so two crime boss negotiating a peace. Al is the only one who seems to realize that Wu is a boss Al shows him respect and makes sure Wu's people see him giving respect. Wu is Al's connection to the Chinese in the camp and Al is Wu's connection to the whites in the camp. that's their alliance two leaders who need the other to have access to the other part of camp.

There's a difference in being homophobic in its language and homophobic in its intent. I don't think we should whitewash homophobic language from historical dramas to appeal to modern sensibilities. And there are at least three gay characters, Jane, Jodie, and Bellegard -- and it is strongly implied Eddie is interested in young men.
